Dev here. Wow! Amazing praise, thank you! The "hating it" to "loving it" arc is very normal in We Who Are About To Die haha.
I set out to make a very unconventional combat system and not be afraid to take risks in game design and doing things differently. In the game both the player and your character need to learn to fight. A level 1 character doesn't just have worse stats (numbers wise) but moves slower, hits worse, is tired faster (turning them floppy as there's a layer of physics on all the animations and entire system) and so on. Your char learns very quickly as you just perform the actions, so it gets better a few levels in.
On top of that the player has extreme (potential) control and influence on attack swing direction, aim, speed etc. Hitting with the tip of a weapon (which is moving fastest) is a big difference, as you mentioned. You can get by doing just regular mindless attacks in easy mode (and normal to some extent), but you can also turn sprint or dash into your attacks for move speed, aim for legs or weak armor, flank enemies, do combo's and invent moves etc. At low stamina your char also becomes harder to control so stamina management is huge. This is just the tip of the iceberg, and obviously this is a LOT for brand new players, especially before the more intuitive Third Person Mode was added.
Add on permadeath and its learning wall for sure. I don't blame people who tune out 30 minutes in, I just personally love interesting innovative mechanics with tons of depth! It's amazing to hear your intro and feel some validation that not compromising and dumbing the mechanics down does pay off! Thank you.
Sidenote, I haven't said this anywhere but 1.0 this year is definitely not in the cards: we have more plans with the game first and are just a 3 man team (up from 1, I originally solo developed it). Perhaps 2025!

How common is 'loving it' to 'hating it.' Because thats kind of how I felt. After about six hours of playtime felt like there wasn't much left in gameplay to achieve.

'In the game both the player and your character need to learn to fight.' That's what I loved in Kingdom Come: Deliverance, how I hated combat until I went to train and it clicked.
Will make sure to pick your game up some day, already spend what I could in the Steam sales. So it has to wait. Hope you have great success with your game, your approach is great and maybe we'll see some more of that in the future!
Love your game man. It was a while since I played it though. Now that there is a bunch of new content I'll play again.
Only complaint was that late game enemies were insanely hard to kill sometimes, because of their armour and weapon combo. I think it was the axes that were broken?

I love this game Mack. I had just played it about a month ago, before this new major update. I completed all the various backstories and was waiting for the the update to dive back in! One of the best indie games I have played in a long while.
I highly recommend anyone who likes directional combat (similar to Mount & Blade style) to pick this up.
Imagining the player getting to decide if they kill or spare a downed opponent, weighing the response from the crowds and future interactions with the fighter's troop. Slap on a nemesis system to develop the other fighters and their relationship to the player - could be pretty cool.
If you like the concept of a gladiator roguelike, this is 100% worth getting.
Fighting does take a little to get used to, but super fun once you do.
Mac you should look up the story of the dev. basically a one man army/soldier/gladiator? quiting his normal job and making the game. Great story.
Games like this, Highfleet, Kenshi, Manor Lords, all developed by one guy....why can't there be more games like these done with love?

I started playing this about a year ago. Was great fun then but I set it aside while I was waited for more content to be added. It recently had an update so guess it’s about time I retake my place among the Coliseums’ worst fighters. FYI it can be a little rough when you first start out but each generation of fighter you do get better. Though the RNG with some of the match types they give you can screw you over from time to time.

Your example is why I don't listen to reviews including my own. A game hitting or not on your first play, in my opinion, has a lot to do with my mood or focus in the moment. I used to blame the game and declare it too complicated or janky only to have it eventually became a favorite when I tried again in a different mood. Glad you liked this one it's a favorite of mine.

Some games need a bit longer, even for a first impression - not saying 100 hours, that's taking the mick, but yeah sometimes games need some time to 'click', especially those that are physics/timing based.

There was an amazing gladiator game for the ps2... it had some rpg elements and it if you died, you stayed dead and needed to restart the game

Shadow of Rome had no RPG systems.
I would assume he means Colosseum:Road to Freedom which this looks to be heavily inspired by(save for the physics based combat system).

It's a great game. Though, it's not a unique combat system as it advertises itself. It's not precisely the same but much of it is lifted from Examina (another great game).

Sadly I bought the game and the camera was off at a 45degree angle and it wouldn't reset. Unfortunately making it unplayable.

You would have liked War of the Roses if you haven't tried it. Similar mechanics for combat but done much better so you could do it quickly once you got good.
I'd rather download PCSX2 and a copy of Shadow of Rome. Now that's a Gladiator game!
