Sister Freide from Dark Souls 3 transforming a SECOND time was absolutely shocking to me. I for sure thought beating her and her father would've been the last phase, but then she powers up again 😂
For me it was almost all of the bosses because all of them took me 10s of tries. But that game is memorable for me because it gave me a bragging point against my friends. I managed to learn parry and be good at it and they couldn't so I could beat the final boss and they couldn't. They were forced to use cheats to beat him but even than the QTE part destroyed them😂😂😂.
The Annihilation fight was insane. Learning the moves and then the second stage flips that on you with the world swapping. It was an exhilarating fight that I wish I could experience for the first time again.
It was hard as hell while still learning it and I know people that swear, just like this video says, that it's pure luck if you can live through it or not... it's not though, there are only certain attacks that will transition and it gives you just enough time to see what's going to come at you that you can dodge it just fine if you're not button mashing. The amount of salt that Annihilation caused when the game was still new was incredible, especially when Nightweaver and Venom existed.
I recently dealt with that *THING*. It kept smoking my main AC until I ultimately made an AC based on Emerald Weapon from Final Fantasy. The T-Posing Green Demon from my nightmares stomped Mecha-Malenia good.
Should have mentioned that the guardian ape boss in sekiro also has a second optional boss fight if you passed the area first and man that boss fight is hard as a second ape comes to help the headless ape
Remember when sword saint isshin pulls up a spear on his 2nd phase, then starts firing shots at you with a gun? Lol. That was, for me, one of the most memorable transformation of a boss.
Sister Friede is my all time favorite boss by FromSoft. Everything is beautifully haunting: the music, the story, the arena. She just wanted you to leave and you destroy her entire world.
About Malenia. I suck at Souls games, and it was the second evening I tried to beat Malenia. Eventually I put Blood Tax on the Great Épée, and called the Mimic with this same equipment. In the fight I had to heal only the damage I got from calling the Mimic, and the Mimic, which was present from the first second of her first phase, finished her second phase on full health. Malenia's got severe allergy to Blood Tax.
For those who are still struggling with Malenia, use dual wield great stars with 1 that has an ash of war with poison and the other with a cold ash of war. You will have the healing benefits that Malenia has and will proc frostbite and poison too.
Number 11 from EDF5 is a monster, that deserves all the hype. And it's second phase is soul crushing on the highest difficulty. (Not to mention the first time everyone reaches phase 2, you can feel them reenacting the Dafoe looking up meme.)
My number one is the Gatekeeper from Dynamite Headdy. Might be nostalgia talking but that transformation with the soundtrack kicking in is so badass. It turns from a joke fight to one of the hardest bosses in the game.
Biggest gripe is with the remnant 2 boss. You 100% were making it harder on yourself. That boss is incredibly easy. Every time you need to dodge you get a distinct sound. You don’t even have to watch for anything. Just wait for the sound and roll
As already hard as Sister Friede is in DS3, I can assure you she's even more difficult as a spellcaster. She *will* dodge 9 out of 10 sorceries thrown her way.
I'm on my 1st playthrough of ER and my goodness what a game, I am in love with Souls Likes after playing Lies of P last year, so I'd say most of us don't mind seeing some of our favorite bosses in this list.
Don't forget about Radahn's second phase grab attack, in which he grabs you and Miquella whispers to you, which does no damage. But, if he succeeds in grabbing you a second time, you stop fighting and worship Miquella and you instantly lose.
I think Guardian Ape was the most demoralizing one. Took me while to down the first stage, then he comes back up and moves so fucking weird it’s like “what the fuck nooooooo!” 😂
The guardian ape’s second phase in Sekiro is definitely easier, because it’s now using a sword which is easier to time with parrying. Parrying its claw swipes in the first phase was harder for me.
Kicking it off with Midra, the Lord or Frenzy! My absolute favorite boss of the DLC! He's so cool looking, I always wanted a piece of him from the original game, and now I got it, literally! lmao
I made it through all of DS3 without putting any points into life, Sister Friede broke me, every move one hit killed me, and the 3rd phase kept getting me. Finally went back and respec’d enough life to survive an attack and beat her.
Earthbound was super eerie, especially due to its abstract nature, overall atmosphere, timing, and all the context. Playing it at the age of 11 truly had a unique impact!
Having the summoner archetype can really help with the final boss in Remnant 2. If you've got a friend with the Engineer archetype is can get even easier.
I'm glad Remnant 2's final boss made the list. It's literally the first boss I thought of. The trick to surviving isn't luck or even your build, though of course that helps. It's SOUND CUES! the sound in Remnant 2 can be very informative. I've beaten the game twice on the hardest difficulty and that's what helped me most. That and getting gud 😁
I'm kind of sad the Rat King from TLOU2 didn't at least make #20 or 19. I mean.. anyone who remembers playing that for the FIRST time as you're exploring that dark ass hospital knows what I mean. And it DOES count as a transforming boss. It technically has 3 stages, with the final stage being when the stalker peels off of it and you still have to find your way out and get past it. For some, it may not have been a "hard boss", not damn Elden Ring level hard or anything, but it was still scary and still counts.
Gannon from TotK, he doesn't get all that more difficult but the first time you phase him and watch his health bar try to leave the screen is an epic boss fight moment.

Zhang Liang was the boss fight that really put of a lot of people when the game first came out.
#19 he is weak from his right side. For some reason he doesn't have that many moves if you stay on his right side. You also interrupt his fire chain attacks if you disrupt when he is charging it

I’ll add the final boss in Pepper Grinder, which is an amazing Indy game that came out earlier this year. It took me a while and so many tries to beat the final boss, way harder than anything that came before. Highly recommend it. Being good at any bullet hell game like gungeon or similar skill there actually translates pretty well to flying levels in cup head, the hard skills of locking your eyes on your character and not the boss and the fine weaving in between projectiles helps
