As things have slightly dipped recently some have begun to grow restless inside the Clemson fan base, and on Late Kick Live Ep 443 Josh Pate responded to Dabo's most recent comments about what's next for the Tiger program. In 2014 Clemson nation was THE example of hope, loyalty & optimism in college sports.
In 2023 Clemson nation is more relentlessly toxic & judgmental against its own players, coaches & future than even its own rivals, & en masse.
"We need a portal kicker!" said nobody in May & in spite of the #1 PK being committed to Clemson.
"We need to use NIL!" in spite of having the first-of-its-kind NIL center & the first-ever national commercial campaign in NIL.
"Stop hiring friends!" for a program once defined by family but also in spite of *hiring the top-rated OC sight-unseen* (& that didn't make Clemson nation happy anyway).
"You're paid $10m & we get to be critical!" for a coach who brings in *hundreds of millions* & Clemson nation has been far more than just "critical" & by legion, relentlessly.
Coach Swinney *will* use the transfer portal at the end of the season, make absolutely no mistake (whether he likes it or not, like the Coach Riley hire), but I don't think Clemson nation can ever be hopeful & supportive like it was once defined by, but can't blame Coach Swinney for trying, at least. 💯

I am a 73 yo Clemson alum that watched and cheered my lungs out in a pouring rain for a Frank Howard team that had to win a game to prevent being the WORST team in the ACC. I watched a Bear Bryant Bama team hang 50+ on us and we would not have scored if the 50-yard line was the goal line. Nah - for me, Dabo probably can't lose enough games for me to be too critical of anything in recent years. I also worked in AL and got to watch the Bama fans cry after Bear left and Bama went thru coach after coach trying to right their ship. For me, I know how critical CBV was to the program and was a major factor in Dabo's success. You can observe OU at 6-0 and probably going to the CFP at 12-0/13-0 to understand that. Those of us who have been thru the fire will just be patient and watch Clemson get better. It is still a great place to compete for national recognition. I find it hard to complain at all even though we have obvious issues.
FSU alum here, and I respect that. Jimbo rode Winstons coat tail, and Willie Taggert had good intentions but was horrible. Then Norvell had bumps in the road. Dabo gotta stop putting his foot in his mouth though.

Anyone here before Dabo's time knows how lucky we are. They are so stupid man it's insane, and Dabo is right they need to leave. This is how programs collapse. They piss of the coach & he leaves. 1:06 there is an HBO show that followed a high school in Maryland. There are kids on this reality show who are currently at Bama and other high level colleges. The kid currently at Bama, during the show was committed to LSU. He gets a call from LSU that he is being dropped. That is how one makes roster space. In days of old I would be against this. Now the players are getting paid… the glove should come off.

As a diehard Clemson fan, I was a fan in the best of times and the worst of times. Do I support everything that Dabo has done? No. Am I the head coach? No. Do i believe he should utilize the portal? Yes. Should it be the same level as Prime did? Absolutely not. Now if he decides to utilize it in their weakest areas, they can turn it around. Many of the people that are “frustrated” are too young to remember the phrase “Clemsoning” when it was derogatory. Those of us that remember the hard times are still here and aren’t going anywhere.
Let's not forget dabo was always against kids getting paid. So staying away from the portal and nil is his way of rebelling.

He will get his sea legs here and you should support the heck out of him and lift him up and inspire him!!! Great football coaches are few and far between. I mean dabo is 100% correct in his comments here. And he’s not speaking about the Clemson fan base alone. He’s speaking on the climate of social and national media. Where these talking heads and fans act like your season is over if you’re not in the running for the national title. In a sport with over 130 teams it’s unrealistic to pretend every one of them can or will compete for the championship. When did winning a good bowl game or winning a conference championship lose all their value? That’s what he’s getting at.

To win 10 games and get to a new year's 6 bowl is a great accomplishment. But many spoiled fans don't see that. Which Clemson can still do. ACC title game is an outside shot. I'm not a Clemson fan.
Huge Clemson fan here! You’re right! Dabo is not the humble hungry coach he once was. He’s now prideful and stubborn. I love him to death but he’s starting to annoy me. He needs to attack the transfer portal aggressively! We need to bring in a larger recruiting class as well every year and we need to reevaluate some position coaches this “offseason”.

They aren't happy to take the place of actual college students and get free education and training just because they can throw a ball around. Now they also want to get paid, and transfer at will in unlimited free agency. To get paid you have to perform.
@@kylez9094 No, but your former teammates' kids shouldn't take up a scholarship that could have went to a better, more productive player because you want to utilize the friends and family plan. Stop doing that and the rest will take care of itself. Same goes for coaches, stop hiring inexperienced position coaches and go get the best, proven guy out there. He did it with Riley and he needs to do it again. This is the only issue I have with Dabo. I've been a Clemson fan (current alum) my entire life. I've been with this program through the good and bad years. I feel that fans shouldn't be called bandwagoners when they point out fair criticisms about the program. Dabo set the standard. It's not fair for him to move the goalpost because he's being proven wrong and doesn't like the fans to call him out on it.

Clemson's greatly benefited from being the only competitive team in the ACC. They had a lot of talent, skill, and plenty worthy staff, but they didn't have to go through a difficult season getting banded up in game after game. That proved to beneficial for the CFP. Now the competition has risen to a level above, partially due to reasons JP mentions, and brought them back to parity.
Clemson had back to back generational quarterbacks, now they don’t. Pretty straightforward
This is such revisionalist history here. In the 2015 and 2016 season Clemson played multiple ranked teams, opened up with Auburn (top 25) on the road, and had to go through still top 10 FSU teams and Lamar Jackson's ranked UL teams. Had two top 10 matchups in the regular season with UL and ND in 2015. Those were the seasons that put Clemson at the top and their schedule went head to head with anyone in the country.
Nothing that Josh says is wrong here, but if you're gonna comment on the subject at least be informed.

@@tigerfan1836 that year beat auburn 14-6 and cakewalked to the playoffs minus a loss to syracuse, and got stomped by bama. op was in reference to the cfp. 2017 clemson relied on defense in the regular season and bryant didn't stand up to the occasion when it mattered.
im a clemson fan and alum but they haven't been a natty contender without a generational qb. prob my biggest gripe in dabo's tenure: there hasn't been appreciable improvement in qb play from when they arrive to when they graduate. from tajh to dju
Dabo lets the portal beat him twice. He needs to coach with a disregard to kids that leave. He needs to stop worrying about Shipley and Klubnick’s FEELINGS. They both should have been benched at some points. If you fumble inside the 1, you don’t get to play again today. If ball security is important, the coach needs to make it important

I mean he isn't that wrong places like Alabama, LSU, Georgia (Im from SEC so I will only name those) expect a national championship every year. I'm from Arkansas and we just want to win big games we dont expect much but my friends from those places say that the atmosphere there pre-season was that and still is in Bama and Georgia.
That was once Clemson nation. In 2014, 10-2 was a celebration & Clemson fans were an inescapable beacon of hope. In 2023, nobody is more judgmental or toxic en masse than those same fans & voices, that's what's so tragic about it; unprecedented success changed Clemson nation forever, but with a horrible cost.
That wasn't always the case with Georgia. When I became a fan of the team in the late 90s the expectation was to make a bowl and win it while hoping to beat Florida. After the 2002 season the expectation became win 10 games and compete for the East while hoping to win the SEC. After 2017 the expectation became win the SEC while hoping to win the national championship.

I know all fans wanted a champion decided in the field of play and I think the playoff is good to have. But it has been a double edged sword. Media and fans are really putting unrealistic expectations on coaches and in the long run it will only ruin good careers. So I wasn't pushing back on your statement because I definitely agree with you. Just pointing out that Georgia hasn't always had an expectation of national championship and I won't truly say this will be the yearly expectation moving forward from Georgia fans until they prove it. I lean towards thinking the majority of Dawg Nation understands the difficulty of what is being accomplished and just wants a consistent highly competitive team.

Dabo got where he is because he defeated the early draft chumps.
His players stayed for 4 while more talented programs saw high turnover to the draft or the portal.
From a Clemson fans perspective. Not everyone thinks the portal is the answer. Most/all agree that the scheme has gotten too lazy and predictable. Making a great OC hire but not doing anything to change the offense. Putting his sons on the roster and giving them scholarships when we all can think of 3-5 players that deserve that slot more. The problem is that Dabo won’t look in the mirror with a lot of these issues and try to adjust. He’s stubborn and set in his ways and some fear that he won’t ever see it until it’s too late to fix it.
How to adjust though? A new kicker? Nobody was calling for that in May. New WR's? Who should we kick off? I just don't think Clemson nation will be happy when his point is about how Clemson nation was the opposite in 2014 & unprecedented success changed the way Clemson nation "supports" Clemson's coaches, leaders, players & recruits.
It is not the answer but it is part of the answer.
@@Greydawg I think the issue lies in the playcalling and coaching and development altogether. You could put that all on Dabo or you could put it on Dabo‘s decisions. Fact of the matter is, is that Clemson is just not elite. The portal could help get there, but being a good team and an elite teamare two different things. Clemson asked me getting back to a good team before they can even consider being elite. They need to fix the coaching and development before they go into the portal. That’s my take.

I want to see a coach fully only use the transfer portal and see how it is in 5-8 years; like yes Colorado and FSU have utilized it, but what if they put zero effort on recruiting freshman but be the Last Chance U but an actual university

I’m sorry but I don’t understand how Clemson fans aren’t angry over this, and I don’t get your take or anyone else’s take that supports him. Clemson was competing for ACC titles, national championships just a few years ago. BUT Dabo has continued to refuse to adapt to the new world of college football and he is costing that football program and fan base wins. Dabo gets paid $10 million a year and has the audacity to call out his fans (who are the reason he gets paid the way he does) after he gets asked why they aren’t as relevant today as they were a few years ago. Dabo had his days in the sun, but that sun set back in 2018. And the longer the Clemson fan base continues to support him and his ego the further they will get left behind. He has proven time and time again his refusal to adapt.
Dabo way worked before NIL and transfer portal. He was against Nil. Because he was already paying players. Why so many came back when they was first round picks. Why he recruited at a high level. Now it's a level playing field. He is showing you how good he really is. 4 and 3. Only going to get worse too.

The portal won’t fix anything it’s not like Clemson had a trash roster and needed to recruit better players. This is very normal. ACC is not the high school league it used to be for the greater part of the last decade. Other teams caught up with Clemson by utilizing the portal.

I think the perception in college football is, if u want to win a natty, u can’t lose, if u lose a game ur on the edge of the cliff, if u lose 2 ur out, no 2 loss team has made the playoffs, now 10 & 2 should be a successful season but if u want a natty, 2 loses means ur seasons over, that is the perception mostly from fans who are not hardcore fans.

I went on a National show in 2019 when Clemson lost BIG to LSU and i said, Marl the Tape!! Clemson will be on a steady downslide until they are back to a mediocre team. No longer elite. Everyone on the Clemson station got mad. Called in and chastised me over the radio for saying this. Well, guess what. How bout now yall? How bout now?

I also remember Clemson going 6-6, 3-8.... the 70's and 80's was hard years being a Clemson fan...
with the exception of the 1981 National Champ season... then going 10 years where Clemson could not attend a bowl game at all.... for doing exactly what is being done by every college today (except for Clemson) via the NIL....
Maybe some of this hate for the portal and the NIL comes from the bitter history when the NCAA tried to kill Clemson football...

Couldn't go to a bowl game for 10 years. What the hell are you talking about. We had a 3 year probation. The majority of the 80s was good. NC. Multiple ACC Championships. Beat Nebraska, Oklahoma, Penn State to name a few in Bowl Games. Several 10 win seasons. Your history is wrong about the 80s.
I support Dado! I agree that we have bandwagon fans. In this episode, you seemed to miss the point of his comments. You said for Dabo to quit listening to the negative comments. His comments were not even directed at true Clemson fans. His comments were directed to his players. Do you think they don't listen to the garbage? I have been a Clemson fan since 1971 when I came home from Vietnam, that's right I didn't go to a learning college, I got my defensive degree in combat. To be honest we and that probably will be about 3 and 1/2 million fans across the nation are spoiled rotten from the past success I went through the bad time with Ford, Bowden, Hatfield so on and so fourth. Dao had been the most solid coach even more so than Frank Howard. I am a coach Swinney believer...Go Tigers...

Florida State did NOT beat Clemson in Death Valley. Clemson beat themselves in that game.
The scoop-n-score to tie the game was become the RB misreading a blocking assignment. Change that, and you have a 10-14 point swing in Clemson’s favor. Also, our new kicker missed a chip-shot to win it late in the 4th. If he hits that kick, Clemson beats FSU. No one who watched or listened to the FSU/Clemson game can argue against these points.
The FSU-Clemson game was NOT the referendum game people made it out to be. This game teaches the following:
1. The traditional method of building a football program is still alive and well.
2. The margin for error in each game is so slim.
In conclusion, I am going to ask this question: How many people have considered the long-term impact of the Transfer Portal on preparing players to make that jump to the NFL?

You don't think they see what's happening? Clemson isn't gonna recruit well nor retain quality players. Dabos only hope is in Sen. Joe Manchin.
The bandwagon fans certainly expect championships and that’s a legitimate call out, but Clemson has a level of talent where they should be much better than they are and that’s a reflection on decisions that ultimately fall back on the head coach. There’s a difference between a bandwagon fan that expects too much and a fan that thinks you shouldn’t fumble the ball in the red zone twice and lose to Duke in the opener 28-7 or mismanage a fourth quarter drive at home against FSU that took the game to overtime and then let the game slip away.
Not to mention this talk is coming from the guy who said “best is the standard”. Give me a break. Dabo is a hack now.

Sweeny is Jim Harbaugh 5 yeats ago. Harbaugh layer put his pride aside and realized that he had to change in orser to be successful. I used to say that Harbaugh needs to be more like the Sabans ans rhe Sweeneys now Sweeney needs to adjust for rhe changing landscape
Right now, there are 85 bright young men and women at community colleges in South Carolina because their spots at Clemson got taken by young men, some of whom can barely read and write, who are good at throwing a ball around. It's hard for me to muster up any sympathy for someone who is ungrateful to have that spot, and have it paid for. Then they want to get paid on top of the free education and training, and have unlimited transfers.
If my only goal was to watch people run fast, I would watch the NFL. It's time to let college students play college football again. No more scholarships and preferential admissions. The Iron Bowl would still be fierce, just a lot slower. Check out your local high school this Friday night and tell me it isn't fun to watch your friends and sons play ball.
Dabo better get on board with the transfer portal and even NIL, I know he hates it all, he even said in an interview if we get to the point of paying college players, “I’ll go find something else to do” but if dabo doesn’t get on board with this stuff Clemson will never be a serious contender for the national championship again.

Why is this a story? We all know Dabo is a big baby, who gets his feelings hurt and starts crying whenever any one criticizes him. He’s threatened to leave Clemson and go to another school on more than one occasion because fans criticized him. I think it has something to do with his childhood that he is not equipped to handle criticism like an adult. If he threatens to live again - Clemson might take him up on the offer and help him find another job.

I am not a clemson fan at all. However, the slander in the grand scheme he has taken is insane. A few things cam be true:
1. Dabo has not adjusted to the modern game specifially NIL which has hurt him
2. Clemson has lost a step
3. With both of those being true, Dabo has a bulletproof resume and one of the best coaches in this sport. Hes a top 15 college football coach ever and a 2 time national champion (very small list of coaches have done that).
1. Dabo/Clemson built the first-of-its-kind NIL center & had the first-ever nationwide commercial ad outright so I'm not sure I get that.
2. Absolutely, & the rest of the ACC is finally not so uncompetitive.
3. Sadly that's not enough for much of Clemson nation anymore.
For what it's worth, I think they should make all underclassmen sit out a year if the leave their team and transfer. That seems like a fitting penalty to keep everyone from playing musical chairs unless it's really important.

I don't think Clemson has bandwagon fans. Fans get pissed off from the stupid shyte Clemson does. I tell my Nole Nation all the time.. Just bcus we got a W don't mean i can't give strong rebuke of dumb play calling, stupid penalties and lazy execution. Accept the criticism same way you accept the glory and praise. FSU is lucky to be undefeated. Clemson didn't execute and left back doors open for no reason. Dabo mostly to blame. This has nothing to do with bandwagon fans. Leave it to him to be arrogant.

What works for Colorado or FSU is what works for them. What works for Clemson is developing our talent for the long runs. Every once in a while the portal provides players with the right places to showcase their talents. But for the most part it causes problems within programs and (here is the most important part) it doesn’t guarantee a championship. I’m sorry but FSU will get a wake up call and all those guys will leave and then what. FSU goes back to the portal, maybe they find someone maybe they don’t. The philosophy has always been learn and do your job and next man up and reload. I honestly don’t care what other people say. The man built a power house on home grown talent. We have won titles on that moniker. And honestly out side of one wide receiver talent for talent Clemson is still heads above other teams. If you thought FSU had a tough time with Clemson you better strap in for the play offs because one transfer player ain’t going to win you those games. Ask Oklahoma and OSU he’ll Alabama what was so tough about Clemson and it’s always been defense. Portals haven’t won anything other than headlines lately. 🤷🏻♂️

Actually the culture at clemson is very toxic now. I live here. They all think they are “basically alabama” and they are pissed they lost 2 games. Its a very cult-like mentality. Hate to say it josh but youre wrong on this one.

Coaches that are getting on fans…we are paying, you are getting paid. Big difference there. I for one don’t care about this sport nearly as much anymore. I have kids, a career, bills, and a community to worry about. You now have a high bar to warrant interest in things involving millionaires who do not know/understand the average person.
