Clemsons DC is not really a question! Wes has been incredible after filling in for one of the greatest college DC of all time in Venables
Fr, Wes Goodwin and the whole defense did their job. Hopefully Rileys second year is better.
Josh's opinion on the coordinators doesnt make sense. Clemsons defense was ranked 7th this past year, their offense was somewhere in the 50s. He seems to be judging these coaches on name recognition and not actual results.
He judges by overall success not 1 season like your trying to do
Garret Riley was in his 1st year at clemson, it takes a bit of time to settle into a new system.
No doubt- don't get me wrong- I doubted Wes a tad at first but he is getting it done. No defense will be all they can be when offense stalls out at the rate we did last year. 2 minute breather for defense eventually catches up physically and mentally.
I am all about not using the portal and I will gladly accept 3 losses a year for what I also appear to be the right way. "I care who you're landing in the portal"...we didn't ask for your approval JP. Pate State isn't funding our team Orr taking responsibility for their character and integrity. We develop. We guide. We fulfill promises to players and families. The Lord calls the shots in Dabos lockerroom and that's why we retain keepers
@@PrimeTimeVol87that's great but defense has NOT been the problem during any of the disappointing seasons. Offense every year was enemy number 1. Certainly you watched the games. So certainly you can see that offense has stumbled all 3 down years. It was in need of spark plugs for Trevors last year but Tlaw and Travis propped it up more than it was worth. Well, the defense stopped the opposing offenses when it mattered and quite often. Offense flopped all year and anybody that knows football at all, knows that 3 and outs and turnovers eventually break even the toughest defensive players' wills and empty their gas tanks. The "it won't matter anyway" bug will spread like wild fire throughout the psyche of a defense when their efforts never amount to 6 points, but instead amount to 2 or only 3 minutes of gameclock break and ugly disheartening offensive efforts led by a QB that has A LOT to prove in 2024 due to legitimately scarring Qb decisions and subpar play in early 2023
@@tiger_spawn4223yep- we looked better I'm the 2nd half. I was ready for another change after week 3 or 4. Honestly, it almost looks like Streeters offense but with a couple more deep throws lol. May be similar, may not be- but I believe GR will adapt and evolve as needed to win

Kind of mis-step by Josh on the coordinators take. I was surprised to hear him praise the offense and brush aside the defense. Wes improved last year. In all phases imo. Teaching, playcalling, adjustments. I can only hope Riley, who I have a lot of faith in, will improve this year as Wes did from his rookie season.
Says the DC is still a question but proceeds to talk about all of the talent discrepancies at WR. Goodwin isn't a question at all. 1/3rd of the points scored came off of turnovers.
Outside of the prevent defense at the end of 2nd qtr in FSU game he has been an excellent coach with consistent signs of improvement.

I applaud Dabo for sticking to his values and continuing to lead the program with the right values in place (accountability, graduating, earning your role). Sure, we have suffered from a competitive standpoint with the modern changes, but we also aren’t as far as people think from making the playoff this year
Let’s talk Clemson and the Transfer Portal really quick. There are two reasons players enter the portal: better roster spot and more NIL money. The DNA that Dabo has built into Clemson makes it difficult to land top ranked transfers because Dabo makes everyone earn their roster position. In addition, Dabo wants guys to come to Clemson for Clemson not money.
Yes, that makes it extremely unlikely to land top transfers, but it also builds the buy-in you need from players to win 5 straight when you are 4-4 with nothing left to play for.
Everyone wants everyone to come to their program for their program rather than money, to be fair; Clemson pays through 2 organizations, it's just not straight pay-for-play is all, & to be clear, Coach Swinney has not been targeting top transfers outright as you suggested they're missing on. Still, no bye-week opponents (again), no ND & the UGA game doesn't matter means Clemson has arguably the most favorable P5 path to the CFP, & perhaps legitimately so to Josh's point.
#2 ranked 25' class. Seems highschool recruits appreciate being the priority 🤷 nah Dabo must just be a dinosaur. All these 🦜's.
Also, Wes Goodwin is a top 5 DC in CFB, 1st in total defense last year. Don't be lazy, do your research.
Clemson needs to reestablish itself this year. What separates the Sabans from the Fishers, so to speak? That's what this year is about for Clemson.
Yup...If 5-stars were the only indicator of success, Jimbo and Co., would be going for a national championship three-peat this year.

Clemson is recruiting at about the same level as they were prior to the championship in 2016. Their average star ratings from 2013-2016 were 88.46, 88.69, 89.12, and 90.30. They beat Alabama during the 2016 year having barely eclipsed the Blue Chip Ratio threshold at 52%. Ironically, it seems to me the program began to slide at bit when Clemson began recruiting at an elite level.
No they really started to decline when NIL and transfer portal took over lol dabo not gonna last without taking at the least 2-3 game changers from the portal to even try and compete in CFB these days
They only had one class that averaged 90 or better? That's just luck and hitting on guys at a really high rate. Great coaching too but a lot of that's gone.
@@Travis89-ob5tt This was a big part of it, yes. It's just interesting that they achieved the pinnacle of success twice prior to achieving elite recruiting in multiple years.

I’m afraid we’re going to be in for another 9-3 type season. It’s hard to complain about that kinda of success but it’s also frustrating when we’re not attacking the portal and going and get 2 to 3 real players that can contribute at key / needed positions. I thought this season was going to change Dabo’s philosophy of the portal slightly but it didn’t.
Clemson *already* broke a record; no bye-week opponents this year (again), further extending the streak to a degree we'll never see any other program even come close to.
On top of that there are just 4 away games, a relatively uncompetitive schedule outside of an off-site Georgia team which Clemson doesn't need to beat *to remain in control of its own destiny outright.* No ND, no trip to CA, & even FSU is likely a rematch in December regardless of the result.
Anyone betting against Clemson to make the playoff is losing money. BET! 💯

The hate for Dabo is unwarranted. He built a great culture at Clemson. However, he should hit the portal.
Even with a first week loss, Clemson has a great shot at winning the ACC.

He recruits kids that he hopes don't care about the money and are bought in but in todays age that isnt going to work out always. People are going to leave regardless of how much they love playing for the school and he needs to use the portal to fix those holes. His way of recruiting worked before CFB free agency but we are just going to have more 9-10 win seasons if he continues this. Im glad he finally followed through on saying he will change by going out of the family and adding Luke and Rumph to the coaching staff
I agree but Clemson has not lost one player over the last 3 years that either was a starter or was not notified that they would need to come back and win their spot because we had out recruited them at their position (DB - to Texas and WR - to ND)

What happens in 2 years when they implement a cap on NIL and the portal? Maybe Clemson will have the strongest culture in college? You can’t spend with the other big dogs. Clemson has a small alumni. The coach is loyal to a fault and you pay players to stay, not come. That puts a serious strain on landing portal players. Make it to the playoffs the next few seasons and another run is coming. Also they won them 2 chips with top 15 classes. The problem lately has been getting soft players on offense. Matched the soft coaches on that side.
If you're a player at Clemson you know you get every opportunity to play and the coach will have your back. Look at DJ and the quarterback they have now.
DJ got ran out of Clemson, though? That was in spite of his performances, too, rather than Cade having vastly better ones. The fans will do the same to Cade this year if it's the same result as DJ's 2nd starting season, for better or worse.
Yes, if you don't perform at critical times in games you will lose 4 games at Clemson. You're right about Cade if he doesn't perform this year.

For anyone reading that may not be familiar- Josh is a *Huge* fan of how Dabo doesn't scoop up players from the transfer portal. I disagree though- I think we (Clemson) SHOULD be getting the loyal, dedicated, consistent, academically-focused, tragically victimized, team-oriented free agents that can revolutionize a very broken, corrupt, and darn-near-bankrupt collegiate football league. Making "sustainable progress" such as having less crippling restrictions on the ncaa's saving grace which is obviously the transfer portal, will ultimately bring college football one step closer to achieving the fan's ultimate-unanimous-nation-wide goal of elevating the collegiate league's culture and standards of integrity, selflessness, loyalty, secular social and political messaging, grass-roots foundation of the gold standard we hail as the NFL. I honestly believe that the transfer portal is to college football what MTV is to music. It is what espn is to consistent quality sports competitions. It is what Disney is to children's purity and innocence.

Dabo reminds me of coaches at the high school level who work harder when they know they've got a good team. If Clemson is good this year, watch Dabo's body language and facial expressions. He won't even look like the same guy as in the previous two years. Let's say Clemson wins a "Natty" this upcoming season: chances are VERY high that Dabo hangs it up....
You're delusional if you think Clemson can a win a Natty. The Georgia game will be Dabo's wake up call. College football is broken NIL changed everything for the worse. If you don't agree with me, just look at Saban. You could argue that Saban was a few receivers away and may be a more dynamic DC and game over and yet he walked away.
You all are missing the point. Dabo loves what he has built at Clemson. He will not bend the knee to what all is going bad with college football. He will win and he will do it with pride and respect. Two things that college football lacks right now. There are outstanding high school players that want to win the right way and get a degree. Clemson will focus their energy towards those kids. Look at the 2025 recruiting class for validation. Clemson will sign an incredible class that will end up around the Top 5-8 because Dabo will not oversign and that works for me.
Personally i hope Clemson stays in the ACC. Alot more of a classy university compared to FSU!

Clemson had Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence for what like 5 straight years? That’s one of the big differences. No disrespect to the QB’s since.
People want to say that it is the NIL and the transfer portal; however, I would say that it is Dabo, himself, who is the primary deterrant. Secondly, Clemson and the ACC haven't been back to the playoffs since Ohio State beat them in 2020. It's been 5 years (2020,2021,2022,2023,2024). Even with NIL and the transfer portal, Clemson lacks the playoff leadership to compete again even with 5-star talent.

Bama wanted nothing to do with Dabo. Why would they? This move would have looked exactly like the what Bama did in the past. They would hire any head coach that was connected to Bear Bryant. The ONLY coach that worked out was Stallings. No, Bama finally woke up, and looked outside of the Bryant coaching tree and here comes Coach Saban. Bottom line, Bamas AD finally adapted. Dabo has refused to adapt at pace consistent enough to stay on the cutting edge, and has unfortunately fallen behind.

Receiver is not THE problem. It might be a problem, but it is not THE problem. QB is THE problem. Dabo won natty's with generational talents at QB. He needs QB's to be transcendent to win. Glad to be a DAWGS fan. Kirby does not have that problem.

⚡️It’s both actually! Clemson still had a dominant season with Kelly Bryant at QB but he still had good receivers to help him out. Watching Klubnik, I sometimes question if he is/was a better QB than KB. Without elite receivers it’s hard to gauge that.
So if Clemson loses another 3-4 games this year is it time to start talking about dabo maybe running his course at Clemson and letting him go
If the Tigers managed to drop four games this coming season then I’d bet the faithful would be hollering for Dabo's head on a plate. If he wasn’t run immediately out of town his seat would absolutely be scorching hot at that point…

@@Grayson950815 they went 13-1 after going 10-3, and 5-7 the year prior: a direct improvement year over year per portal usage. Clemson has gone 10-3, 11-3, 9-4. 0 improvement, and in fact, a drop off. Top schools all use it to fill holes in their roster. Why doesn’t Dabo?

Florida State has surpassed Clemson in the ACC due to Dabo’s failure to embrace the transfer portal.

The best thing that happened for Clemson this offseason is that FSU signed their joke of coach to a long term deal. They actually thought Bama wanted to hire him....Norvell's agent earned his money with that.
