BMW N47 Timing Chain Failure At Only 94000 Miles??? Is That Even Possible?

• Snapped BMW N47 Timing...
main problem is not maintainance but badly designed engines( n47, n57) with timing chain and main bearings problem. I bought e60 with m57n2 engine that had oil changes every 30k km and still was running good at 400k km without any sludge under valve cover. Oil change every 10k km may help a bit but still it will likelly spun bearings or brake timing chain even before reaching 300k km
You are right, like I’ve mentioned in the video, engines are made much poorer nowadays. M47 and M57 were legends. But unfortunately we have to work with what we have, n47 is nowhere near as robust as m47 - it never will be, but if taken good care of, could be a good engine.
Drive a 2009 LR Freelander 2, 2007 BMW Z4 and even an old 1980 MGB, and even though I only use them occasionally I religiously change the oil and filter every 6 months - overkill probably but as you say it’s cheap compared to issues caused by not doing it. Even low mileage causes its own issues - mainly internal engine condensation and the telltale milky residue on the filler cap. Changing the oil helps as does venting the rocker cover after a long hard run? Good video 🫡
Thanks for watching! Same here 5-6000 intervals, Motul oil for me works perfectly.
I have the B47 engine in an X1 and had oil changed in January. It's going in again in late September and will get another oil change even though its showing as not needed for 14,000 miles.

Over the years I notice with the N47 that the heavier cars, x1 etc have the chain snap more often then the smaller cars 118d etc but no excuses for this one its simply very poor maintenance.
@@RigmodsModding long oil intervals, and insufficient care from the owners will result similar outcomes. Thanks for watching
Oil life is lower in the heavier cars as the engine is working harder more of the time - but the comedy long service intervals are the same for every model.

@@timbo19751975 correct, also short distances-city driving with start/stop is a killer…oil change is the key
Really informative, thank you for another great video!
@@rebekak5555 thanks!
Thanks for the video, is excellent, we are waiting for the second part! And by the way… when will you open for costumers? ? ?
@@Mixy88 thanks for watching! At the moment just just on a hobby level
My daughter owns an X1 and her partner a 2 series both with N47 engines which they bought at low mileages. The X1 has now done about 120k miles and the 2 series over 170k miles. Neither of them have timing chain rattle because they listened to me by ignoring BMW’s ridiculously long service intervals and get the oil and filter changed every 6-8k miles by using non long life quality oil and filters.
I don’t care what oil you use, changing it every 18-20k miles is ridiculous. When I see cars with full BMW service intervals makes me cringe.
I also tell them to warm the car up before driving them hard and let them tick over for a minute or two after driving them hard before switching them off to save potential turbo damage.
100% correct! That’s the right way to do it
it may have 0 noise and just to brake unexpectedly seen that many times with this engine. better to check with timing chain wear indicator for those engines
Excellent content as usual, will you be selling the car once the work is completed
@@kirkbatchelor6021 thanks for watching. I’m planning to keep it for a while to test it and make sure it runs well.
Great video as always👏🏼

The real problem is BMW,s 150000 miles service intervals .I have an X3 ,97k ,change the oil filter every year,no problems with it 😊😊
@@barryjones872 Correct
mine is 2010, 200k km, and looks better than this, just cleaned everything from maf to valves circuit, glow plugs and control unit ... the response now is finger snap fast
Thanks for watching. This car was neglected big time. There was no fuel cap on it…behind the Flap door there was the refilling neck without any cap on it. Dust, rain anything could have entered it…Imagine how careless was the previous owner.
@@W15Garage wow, that must've been a barn find 😂
Our 2013 BMW X1 1.8d snapped the timing chain just over 3 years ago at 72000 miles ....... broke every rocker arm bent a cam and what ever else , cost 2grand to fix 😢
🤦♂️sorry to hear that, every case is different isn’t it. I personally haven’t experienced two of the same kind of damage after timing chain failure.
@W15Garage yes every car is different as I know people who have bmws with 140 150000 miles and still going strong .....I was surprised it happened as I always serviced the car every 10000 miles with castrol edge oil too ...... now it's every 6-7000 without fail ....
Anything is possible without oil 😅
😀😀
🤣🤣🤣

That's possible. Because Users Using an Long Life Oil Engine and they think it's forever. Just STUPID as f..... every 9000km oil change and will be just perfect.
