    Love you both! I keep a freezer bag in my freezer for leftover veggies. If there is only 2 green beans left from dinner it goes in the bag. Every kind of veggie goes in there. When it is full I make veggie soup or use it for a stir fry. I have been doing it for years. God bless you both

      My dad always kept a bowl in the freezer and yes any leftover went in it. When he decided to make soup he would thaw out the bowl.

      I do the same but also save bits of meat and chicken. If there are any sauces left, I add those to the soup also. Never tastes the same but it is always good.

    Tip....ask for to go container at the beginning of a meal. Put 1/2 of food into container. Helps me a lot.

      Take your own container! Using disposable especially when you plan to use one is just as wasteful as leaving the food.

    Eating to much food is definitely true. I was pouring milk in a cup for myself thinking it was 1 serving. Then I realized the size of the cup. It was a 12 - 16 oz cup, which is 2 servings, not 1.

    You guys have helped me so much. My fridge looks bare right now but I'm planning meals for tomorrow to use up the last bits. I wont need to go to the store for at least another 2 days. My husband commented today that we are spending much less on groceries once I started watching you!

    I recently cleaned out half of my house and out of all the cookbooks I had I donated all except your cookbook, it really is the only one worth holding on to. I've been watching for a few years now and I appreciate that you still give no nonsense advice.

    when I was a teenager I would split a plate with my sister at our youth restaurant eat outs, I had friends that mocked us because of that....today I see how my choices growing up helped me start out my married life in a very good way. Teaching kids simple things will go a long way and I am so grateful my parents never just handed us things! I love watching all your youtubes!

    Some of our favorite meals were made out of leftovers that I threw together. Now there are some things that I only make from our leftover meals. I make them on purpose now...as my family requests.

    Leftovers make wonderful dog food and dogs can eat and love most human foods. I use leftover rice as a base and add the leftover vegetables and meat. I’m still saving money as I don’t buy expensive dog food and my large 13 year old dog has never been sick with a vet bill.

      My parents have a little dog who developed diabetes about five years ago so cannot eat most commercial dog foods. This dog loves scrambled or boiled eggs as well as steamed broccoli! I wish cats liked that kind of food - I ran out of cat food one day so boiled an egg and split it between the two cats. They acted like I was trying to poison them. Later I saw each of them had eaten the whites of the egg but not the yoke. Interesting.

    Norway has the highest cost of living in the world with very high taxes and food cost. They save money by cutting back on food and not buying expensive food or so I was told. That could account for the skimpy lunch.

      I’m in the uk and have travelled a lot the biggest portions I’ve ever seen are in the 🇺🇸
      We ordered 1 dessert for 3 of us and still couldn’t finish it all it’s crazy

    I have never given my family a choice on "leftovers ". They like to eat them for breakfast or an after school snack. My husband said he would buy the banana muffins. They are that good!

      Over eating/food addiction is an eating disorder. Its something I've dealt with for years and am seeking help for. It doesn't make me sinful or bad. Its literally an addiction. I find Jill's advice very helpful

    Good banana tips. I’ve extended their life by a day by putting them in the fridge after they brown.. Also peel and cut them up and freeze. Frozen bananas are great for cereal. Most apples are two big. Can cut them up. Do the lemon juice and ziplock bag trick. Now I have two servings of apple rather than throwing part of an apple out

    My husband and I are newly empty nesters as our kids have moved out all this year...and it is so difficult to not buy or prepare a lot of food.

      brightpurpleviking . My husband and I became empty nesters all in one year, it was difficult to cook less food. But the worse has been since my husband passed away and learn to cook for one.... very very difficult. What I do, is cook and immediagely after it is cold, freeze the food in portions for one and freeze them. It is wonderful, I have like tv dinners ready for my lunches and dinners, even for my grandchildren when they come to visit, they even have choices....

    Just love your videos, as usual!❤❤❤ Also, Jill, it's called orthorexia (a preoccupation and obsession with "healthy" eating). I suffered from it for years. It's not in the DSM-IV yet, but psychologists do use the term. My experience with it, I believe it's anxiety based. I see it everywhere on RUclips. All age groups. Personally, I even see it in veganism, paleo, keto, etc. NOT to say that everyone following these diets have orthorexia. No. But, there is a risk bc you are more likely to become obsessed with your "healthy program (diet)". It's a slippery slope. Everyone needs to understand that anything you read or see about nutrition should be taken as a guideline or suggestion. It doesn't have to be hard rules or religion. You make small changes that work with your lifestyle, budget, family. Even if you must follow a strict plan (ie: celiac or diabetic), learn what you need to know. Do it. But, don't let it become your identity or an idol in your life. Don't live in fear. God bless.🙏

    Thanks for this series! I save leftovers and freeze them and when I have enough I make a big soup. Wow I do compost apple cores and peels but never thought about eating apple peels. Good idea. Love your cookbook!

    The story from Norway is true. That is Norwegian "matpakke". Two thin slices of bread with a thin coat of butter, just as a glue to get the salami or cheese to stay on the bread. Everyone from kindergarden, through school, and I still have lunch like that at work, all my collegues eat the same. (We do not do any school lunch programs here) Different kind of toppings, and we have some salad or pepper or pickled quecumber on top for decor.     People say they won't eat/don't like left overs. Yet they'll eat the same thing for breakfast or lunch day in and day out. If you can eat the same breakfast or lunch 2 days in a row, you can eat the same meal for supper 2 days in a row.

    A couple of years ago me and my mom took my son to McDonalds. At the next table there was a lady with 2 kids. She bought her kids a chicken nugget happy meal each and a full menu meal for herself with a huge Coca-Cola.
    Each child literally had half a chicken nugget and a few chips, same as the mother. Afterwards they just left not taking anything with them, so i went up to the table and took the toys from the happy meal and my mom took the chicken nugget and the Coca-Colas which were not even opened.

    Yes! You have to be purposeful with your leftovers. I’m on a special weight loss plan where I plan out the next day’s food the night before. Whenever I have a little bit leftover, I write that food into my plan for the next day (or the day after) to make sure I use it.

    Thank you for sharing your tips! The portion sizes can be pretty high in Canada too. It is funny though when I go out to eat with my boyfriend and his son, I'm known as the human garberator because I will shamelessly eat their left overs all the time. Whether I eat them on the spot or take them to work with me. And I'm still the skinnier one in the relationship.

    I put the cores and the peels in a pan with water and a cinnamon stick. Makes great juices. I also put in any grapes and pairs in too, or I take the juices and freeze them to cook more fruits in.

    Your content is great, and right on. Love the cookbook too. If you could just tone down the judgmental attitude a bit. People make excuses for not being able to do something because they are not ready or willing to do what it takes, simple as that. "I/we can't"= not ready or willing.

    When I came to the states to visit my cousin we had a subway batch/roll ( full size) and it fed my cousin and I for two meals!! Her husband ate a whole one in one sitting. Their is no way that I could have eaten that whole subway roll in one sitting!!!

    Jill, I buy so much food that I have no time or am too disorganized to prepare and it goes to waste. It really is morally wrong to waste food like that. I am ashamed and you all are making me get a grip with these videos. Love Tawra's tip to freeze sour milk in ice tray cubes. Thanks for the wisdom.

    My sister use to order her kids(5- and 7 ish years old adult size meals “ because they wanted them”. Then of course they left 80% of it at the restaurant! Wouldn’t even take it home!

    I'm glad you mentioned over-serving. It used to be you could buy standard juice glasses, about 1/2 cup....now you can't find them. Constantly pouring juice as a drink. A milk serving is 1 cup/8 ounces not any random glassful. Many of those glasses are 12 oz minimum. If a kid has milk on cereal, milk for lunch and dinner, yogurt and cheese...it may be too much.
    I had a diabetic here for some time and used to keep a couple sets of cheap measuring cups handy to use as serving spoons. Its amazing how far off you are in a serving amount when you eyeball it....trust me.
    I also had to learn to measure things like dry pasta and not cook TOO much of things that simply might not get eaten, having too many leftovers that was feasible for the number of people and days. A cheap kitchen scale works wonders.

      I ended up buying my kitchen dishes individually because I wanted smaller plates, bowls that held 1/2 cup of soup/cereal and juice glasses. It probably cost me more but it sure saves me at meal times. A full small plate holds about half what a regular plate holds. This is where my serving sizes change.

    OMG, my mom learned to make potato pancakes for her boyfriend, he is Polish in background. They are sooooooooooooo good, with sour cream or apple sauce. It's also a Jewish dish.

    I may eat out @ chinese buffet occasionally. I buy take out & bring it home. That is 3 good size meals for me. Or more. Apple peels can become applesauce. You can get a balanced diet, but you don't have to eat vegetables, proteins, carbohydrates, etc @ same meal. It can be spread throughout the day.

    My husband and I stopped snacking at night. Both our grocery budget and waistlines have gone down 😁 we also never get rid of food if possible. He's literally taking two tablespoons worth of leftover corn in his lunch tomorrow!

    Freeze the milk in ice cube trays BEFORE it sours! I can't stand the taste of soured milk. You can make milk shakes in the blender without having to use so much ice cream to make them thick! Take a cup of water and measure how much each cube holds and then when you have a recipe that calls for milk, you'll know how many you need to put in! (btw once milk freezes, you can dump the cubes in a Ziploc bag and get your trays back)

    Also a tip for saving on cereal is to get the plastic cereal keepers that will hold a whole box of opened cereal to keep it fresh until used up. They are cheap and do a good job! We try to never waste anything at our home. This is something that was taught us by our parents who went through the Depression. 😝😝😝🙏🙏🙏

    When I was treated to dinner, I had water, salad, and the entree. I got full on the entree and salad! I did not order a sugar beverage, but ordered lemon slices in the water. My mother in law had her dinner boxed and my husband's dinner boxed and took them home with her. Two meals she did not have to cook from scratch.

    #1. I always take about 1/2 of my lunch or dinner in a to go container, my family argues over who gets it. #2. Freeze bananas to make either banana nut bread or banana nut muffins. Will be adding them to French toast soon. #3 Have ziplock bags of fruit and veggies to add to anything I want to cook. Please keep the videos coming!

    I understand the obsession, but, I have MS that absolutely flares up when I don't eat well... In fact, my profound fatigue and other symptoms are directly related; the lack of particular vitamins in blood tests show. When I take those lacking supplements I am healthier. When I drink "organic" vs toxic pesticides spinach in a smoothie for example, I can feel the difference for days after. (*NOTE: Not to say that *all* foods should be bought organic, but, there are some particular essential types of vegetables in which it does actually matter).
    The Mediterranean diet is probably the best; The people of Greece, parts of Italy, other Mediterranean places have less diseases and longer lifespans. Funny Fact: Both the people in a California county follows the "South Beach Diet" which is Mediterranean cuisine, *and* Seventh Day Adventists (Their "allowed" foods mimick the Mediterranean) are incredibly healthy based on studies. Think Fish, olive oil, yogurt and lots if greens, olives and other fermented foods (Probiotics- What our gut needs to be balanced and healthy. Most diseases and health problems are from your gut.)
    So although I agree with portion sizes, eating balanced, not wasting, sometimes quality is important.
    Meanwhile I am living on Coffee, ha.
    Anyway, you ladies are sweet and have great content. Just commenting my little 2 cents on this one.

      I get your points. I think there is a healthy balance. There are so many non-food toxic ingredients added to our foods in so many ways, it's a real problem.

      You need to watch all the things you read about these diets, combine them with life experience and adapt them for you for sure. My grandfather was Greek and did have a Mediterranean diet but died at the age of 54 with a heart attack where my grandmother did not have a very good diet and lived to be almost 100. I have family members who are stressed all the time over eating healthy and have colds and other things all the time and other ones who eat nothing but junk foods and never have a cold. So I really take all these diets with a grain of salt I am afraid. Eat what makes you feel good the main thing and what you can afford because if you spend more than you can afford the stress from that will probably make you sick before the lesser quality food does.

      @@jillcooper172 Agreed. I couldn't eat *just* Mediterranean food anyways. Just adding it into what you do like is just fine. Yep, my husband's grandfather lived to past 100 and smoked 2 packs a day and ate bacon daily🤷‍♀️. Then, I've had 3 friends who ate incredibly healthy and died of Cancer. Genetics!!
      At this point in my life, I look at food as fuel. What I put in directly relates the level of energy I'm able to put out.
      And yes, stress, over things like finances, is a huge stem of bad health.
      Just being mindful, have a grasp of what you put into your body, while also realizing that if that triple chocolate icecream on sale will make you feel happy: Indulge baby. Because it really is too short.

    Throwing away food is throwing away money. IDEA FOR A VIDEO: Make a visual display showing people actual money in glasses and plates and show them how you put the coins and bills in the bin like they throw away food. Maybe they’ll get it then. And show coins in pizza boxes vs a pot, homemade vs takeaway.

    I have a basic menu. Usually I make a pot of beans each week. That gallon of beans last a week, cost maybe $6. With that I have a banana a day great cup of coffee.
    I was drinking diet Coke or low sweet tea. Now I drink water after my coffee. Might get tea with meal. I found drinking ice water I don't eat as much and I'm losing weight.
    I wait till my bread gets low before I go buy some. If I see I have not been eating the bread I will toast it make pb&j . Same thing with milk wait till milk is almost our before I go buy. If I notice the exp date is approaching I will eat cereal.
    I'm not as good at this as you are, I need to eat more green. I take a multiple vitamin to make up for anything lacking in the diet.
    Yes I eat too much my meals are too much. I have better Work on this. I have been spending a lot less on food. I was eating at dads house a lot the food is good there and affordable they like me to eat there they don't eat the leftover. I could live off their leftovers alone.
    I could really do something like go fishing every day filet catfish sells for$4 a pound not difficult to get 5 lbs a day, convert that to cash or trade it can really add up.

    I try so hard to get my nails nice like Jills! Can I ask what brand she used for her manicure in this video?

      Kayla I have always had trouble getting my nails to look nice. I was given 2 manicures as a gift 40 yrs ago and they turned out worse than when I painted my own so have never had another one. The only thing I do now is buy polish at the Dollar Tree. I don't like the colors always so I have learned to mix my colors. I bought some pink that was too bright and toned it down with a little gray polish. That is really all I do. Oh I do sometimes ask for a present for Pink Amour Nail Gel you can get it on amazon and I think Walmart and use it once in awhile.

    Thanks for sharing gals, always very interesting.Rarely is anything here wasted, between kids, dogs and a garden it is rare it gets thrown out, usually a kid left something somewhere and needed a hazmat suit to go to the trash outside, even the bear would have turned his nose up at it, or we bury it deep depending what it was.-lol
    At least Jesus did not have to worry about the garbage they sell in the store and then just make it appear, what a deal-real blessing to have that gift. For lunch when we travelled we would take sandwich baggy of carrots, one of cucumbers, then bring nuts and fruit. If we are out a long time then we make tuna fish or chicken salad with onion and celery on rice cakes. We use spinach instead of milk, the milk if overdone, calcium is best obtained from veggies. All of this would take care of a family of 4 out to cover lunch and a snack, if we went to a diner it would cost us $30-$40 but this way we spend $10 and this would even cover us if we hiked. Usually we drink water during the day, a half gallon of plain apple juice lasts all week usually. Our family did become sick eating too many starches and not enough of the right fats, proteins and oils.

    I wait tables. In a 5 hour breakfast shift, we fill a trash can full of left over food people don't eat

    I just threw away an orange. I'm 70 and I haven't tasted a really good orange in years. It tasted dead.

    I fell into that trap of worrying about what to eat and nearly had a nervous breakdown. Thank heaven I pulled out of that mess. You think about how many people lived on cheese and bread. Of course they had other foods and people used to grow gardens so they naturally did have more veggies than average. My husband and I use our leftovers in lunches or to make new meals.

    Serving size is important but I think something else people don't think about or know about is not just what is a serving size, but how MANY servings per day of that item they are supposed to have. Like milk/dairy, your only supposed to have 3 servings a day! So one SMALL glass of milk, is 1/3 of what you need, one slice of cheese, that is one serving. And people put gobs and gobs of cheese and then milk and sour cream sometimes in just one recipe, like soup, or mac and cheese or cheesy potatoes etc. So i think its important to know how many servings of serving sizes of various kinds of food is appropriate for different ages.

    Once I went into a Health Store & the owner was trying to pawn off his old fruit to me like Oranges & limes & lemons & I said no cause they didn’t look very fresh on the outside he said here take them home & you’ll see that they are still good to eat I was amazed so now I eat my fruits even if they’re hard or just alittle imperfection on the Outside.
