- How to etching (dissolve calcite) from silver nuggets with muriatic and polishing in a rotary rock tumbler. Collected these rocks metal detecting at an abandoned silver Ontario silver mine. This video dedicated to Andrew, who is undergoing chemo. Stay strong my friend. Many good years still ahead of us.

I bet there were a few old miners long ago who would have liked the acid bath, especially if they had pocketed a piece while working for someone else.

Good idea in theory, as you know it's all down to how that silver is laying in the rock, not so pretty this time but still very good specimens for someone.
Those heavily loaded rocks need slicing really, raw silver is not the most attractive thing for anyone's collection but it can look really fake if polished, horses for courses I suppose, whatever floats your boat.

I wish i could just message you this. Save your sandpaper if you do any handpolishing man. I got a rubbing stone and shortened my first stage down to VERY quick with my calcite crystals, using your method mostly with the same hand pressure and submerged or with running water. Thanks again for all your videos! It's taught me so much and given tonnes of hope to someone who wasn't sure if there was much to find in Ontario. Happy hunting buddy! 😁
A stone is a really good idea! I now have a flat lap and a vibrating flat lap, so my sandpaper days are probably over. ;-)

@@jeffclarkofclarklesparkle3103 Mine was made by Way Too Cool in the USA. It is 9 Watt. I tried a different brand recently which was higher power and liked it better.
@@meMiner lmao...so 2 hours into polishing i realized i needed more sandpaper for the rubbing block because the calcite smoothed it to glass almost 😂😂😂
@@meMiner omg! Dude! Forget everything i said and replace it with this! A piece of long sandstone + a tiny bit of water to make a mud. I've only done a tiny bit so far but im guessing it takes it down to about 600 grit, and FAST. As much speed and pressure you want providing a big chip doesn't come loose. Ok ill shuddup for now haha! (SO 😁)
Never worry about ruining them. Should you do, bottle up the solution, send it to me and I'll extract the silver from solution. I'll let you pick what you want from my collection for trade. I'm not sure if anything I have is worth it though. LOL. I do actually have some cool stuff which I will hopefully have uploaded on video soon.
I have nearly every type of igneous rock there is, and if I don't have it, I can get it since I live in Washington State.

I'm from Ohio, I found alot of similar type metal/ rocks, really polished up on the shores in certain areas only on lake Erie, I always thought they were silver because of the #'s and tone put off by my metal detector. Thanks for sharing, new sub here.👍
One thing about the edges of Lake Erie and Ontario is there are bondfires where people burn their old beer cans and the melted result sounds really good on a detector.
The acid videos are fun. I used acid once to remove the matrix from a chain coral. Then I was gently holding it to take it to show my wife and dropped it on the kitchen floor. It broke into tiny pieces. I’m going to try again soon.
There is a way to harden rocks so they are not so fragile. I should learn more about it. Too bad you dropped your rock. Been there...
Looks good! Keep all those little bits! I finally got a propane melting furnace and could melt all the little bits down into a bar!

I found a couple strange rocks/minerals a few weeks ago. One was black with a high specific gravity. Once cleaned, it looks like silver. No magnetic quality. Small gold streak on top. Are there any simple field tests that you know of to test it at home?
Streak test (on a white porcelain plate). Acid test (you can buy the acids at a jeweller). Melt (silver and platinum have a high melt point whereas tin and lead don't). Or the easy route is find somewhere who have an XRF and have them tell you. If it was a vein on your own claim, then you would send for fire assay.
I would really love to find a few bits like that just to play with. A bucket list item, I just have gold on my claim...😔

A project where one would soak the rocks in acid for a longer period of time seems like it would be fun ... results would be interesting
It is always difficult to know when to stop. You can leave it in until all the calcite and other affected rock is completely removed. Sometimes that looks great. Other times, you end up with a bunch of pieces. All I wanted to do here was expose a bit more and then put a shine on it.
Me, what do you remove the rocks from the acid bath with?
I use a slotted plastic spoon from the dollar store. A really bad idea to use fingers.
Have you tried adding hydrogen peroxide to the HCL. You could probably dissolve the base metals also leaving mostly silver.
I tried a few times and didn't notice much change with the rocks I tested

- Btw, which gas is HCl and calcite?
HCL is muriatic acid. Calcite is the white rock in this video. HCL dissolves calcite. Hope that answered your question.

Do you have multiple tumblers or just a ton of patience?
I have a few tumblers of different sizes. I usually only do one tumble at a time. I would drive my wife nuts if I have all of the going at the same time.

Garett makes good detectors. I don't own any, but know people that do. The Ace 250 is pretty good and will certainly find stuff, but if you can afford to upgrade to a better model, you won't regret that decision either.

@@jimfamille7025 Sometimes, there are good deals on used detectors, as long as it is from a reliable source. You don't want to buy a fake or something with a problem. When I am shopping for a detector, i keep my eye on the online forums, such as the classified on treasurenet.com I have gotten good machines at about half the price of new and with extras such as additional coils. I'd rather have a used quality detector than a new cheap one.

I usually use diluted (4:1) muriatic or white vinegar.

Thank you for you video. I was talking to my Auntie about a black sand on a creek on. My Uncle place. He died of cancer anyway. My Auntie told me of an old silver, gold mine near the creek. So if I get time I will check the old silver mine. Your video was very helpful Thank you. (The silver mine was active in 1938)

Some copper very.small.traces.
Only a few of the mines in the area had gold. Trace copper was more common.

I must know somethink to not to cut my fingers ?
The diamond blades are fairly safe. Even so, I wouldn't intentionally stick my hand in one. Just don't buy a blade with teeth as they will take a finger off.
@@meMiner That's great information. My tubled stones have some cracks inside. It's was visable only before course grit tumbling. With this saw I can cut the cracked place and haves beautifull tubled stones. Please take look on your messenger, I can send to you photos of my stones ;)
