I've not seen that much NHL action in any Maple Leaf game I've ever watched , and that's the first winking chipmunk I've seen. Great video Greig and sweet results.
The chippie was too much fun. Every time I was working, he would pop up and "chip" at me. As soon as I put the camera on him, her would vanish. So I put out some sunflower seeds on a rock and left two cameras there. I was laughed during editing when I saw him wink.
I love the last one you cut the most. The contrast between silver and stone is beautiful. You do some awesome work.

I always wonder how much rock to put into my video, or how much of the polish/cutting process to include. I can also look at rocks all day, but notice in the metrics that many people just skip to the end. In the end, I just make videos that I would watch and people either like it too or stop watching.

I have never tried gluing silver slices back together. I suspect you will not be happy with the result. You will always know it was glued.

Went to a gem and mineral show this weekend. Came across a guy selling silver ore. Of course you were the first thing I thought of when I saw it. I think you should take a slice off for me! :) Hahaha, Barenaked Stones. That guy loves his rocks as much as you do.
Did the seller have nice samples? I bet after watching my videos that you didn't get sucked into a bad slice. For sure, Barenaked Stones has a passion for rock.

It’s 12:30am, wife is asleep in bed next to me and I can’t sleep, so watching yur videos. Then I see hockey cards skating around... I lost it and burst out laughing. Thank you that was hilarious !!! She on the other hand was not so thankful.
When I started to read your comment, I was thinking you would say my video put you right to sleep. LOL I hope you wife forgives you. Last time I was on a plane (red-eye - overnight), some people wearing headphones were watching a comedy. They all broke out laughing at the same time and plenty of people were sleeping.

That was an awesome intro--You made Elmo and myself laugh.... I bought a small table top cutting wheel...works great for smaller rocks- but when you want to cut the big boys...you have some stones when it comes too cutting them....Dig,Dig,Dig

Personal favorite to find here in Minnesota is red stromatolite jasper, but that would change tomorrow if I found anything close to what you slabbed and finished. I am gobsmacked. Also love how visually similar stromatolite and your silver can appear. Very Nicely Done!

I believe the metal base is aluminum. The pad I used was just some felt bought at a sewing store (I am lost in that kind of store, just like my wife is lost in a fishing/hunting store). It was surprising how easy the machine is to use. Many things learned rock tumbling apply to the process here. Especially to clean the rocks and tool between grits.

Loved the humour to your video, the chippies are a friendly bunch, known as **des Petits Swiss** in French. Tools used would be a diamond blade uh?, caution has to be advised as it can be harmful to lungs if you inhale the dust when trying to saw rocks, but the water compensates for your cut as we see on your saw. Very interesting and informative. I will try Baking Soda to polish my rocks, with water or simply a tooth brush making it into a paste.

I was lucky to find one used. I think I will get quite a bit of use out of it. What I really need now is a larger saw.
For sure lucky, looks like new. I've wanted one of these for awhile now. I guess a bigger saw is probably a good idea to, haha. I have a 10" diamond blade but no saw big enough to put it on, ah well.

Quick question? I've sliced some of my rocks and the cut face has some very bright silver but some of of the metal is duller but will polish up to a bright shine, is the duller metal a mixed metal or just cobalt?
When the slice is bright shiny on the fresh surface, that is usually "pure" silver. A dull grey probably has cobalt and/or arsenic in it. Usually you can tell by looking at the outside of the rock at the oxidation. It still might have silver, but to me falls into the "mixed metal" category.

They polished up well, I did mine like that but got fed up with changing the grit so I changed my method slightly, did all my cuts first, hot glued weights on the slices, rubber o-rings or anything I could get my hands on to stop them bumping and causing damage then put them in a queue for each stage, the time consuming bit and noise I hated so the polisher only went on when I left the garage, polishing both sides seems like a never ending task, but it gets the job done, I've been using cerium oxide to finish, never tried rouge, is there a big price difference?

The proper thing to use is cerium oxide. I have not bought any yet. So this was a case of using what I had on hand. The red rouge is a polish for silver. I don't know the cost of the red rouge. This bucket came with a used rock tumbler.
What I didn't like about polishing slices (metal ones don't really need extra weight, so I can probably avoid that step), is they wiggle their way under the bumper and then hang up. As such, I have to pay attention while they are running or they burn out in one spot when that happens and the others pile up.
Today was 40C. Felt like hot. Daisy was either down at the lake or inside in the air-co. The temperature was the reason that I didn't go rockhounding. I am sure some people will call me a wimp, but that is too hot for me to be active.

No , I will go with the it's too hot, I'm sitting indoors in the cool as it's way hot in the garage, I understand about the slices sliding under the bumper that's why I put bumpers on the thin ones , made from petrol hose, hose pipe, inner tubes or anything that will self hold , some people use plywood rings.
Most of my stuff is profiled , shaped etc so I don't use the vibro but I have a huge pile of stuff I don't know what to do with , that may well get sliced.

I remembered my mother telling me they cleaned her jewellery with what she described as jewellers rouge, I normally use cerium oxide so I was just comparing really.
Smart move; however I was silver-struck enough to go rockhounding in Cobalt on Canada Day, it was excruciatingly hot but I did it, how? I will never know, didn't get a sunstroke thankfully, it was 32 degrees C in the shade!

I got a question. I found a pure red rock and it is beautiful. It is so beautiful I am afraid to do anything to it, but yeah know curiosity is just killing me. What do I do? What do you think it might be? Hum why are you not using a mask and eye protection? Yeah taking care of ones wives also means taking care of yourselves. My husband did not use eye protection and while cutting he got both of his eyes cut like glass. That made me so mad. Hospital , eye shades, patched on one eye for two weeks, two different eye doctors. Men arg
OMG, that sounds horrible! I hope your husband is doing well. Lesson learned!! 😨
McChrister You know recently he went to the eye doctor and they found a vessel that is bleeding behind his right side near the cornea. The doctor asked him if he ever had his eyes cut by welding. So years later after the event we now need to take him back to the eye doctor. Thank you for asking. Right now it is ok, but the doctor wants to see him every three months.

With the vibratory lap - do you have to clean the different grit out when you change to a finer grit or do you change the machine?
Wash out the machine well. You can buy additional plates and I can see this would save effort and grit. Only issue I can see, is you still need to make sure there are not little rocks that broke off and will damage the next round of slabs. ie. it is not just grit to worry about.
Would be neat to do the whole process but then etch away the host material.
I need a vibratory lap machine too.

Thanks for responding do quickly to my last question yesterday and i have another. What is that vibration table? I have bigger rocks also and what type/brand grit do you use and gave you tried various types?
The table is a vibratory flat lap. I really like it, but if you were to only have one machine, I would suggest getting a regular flat lap (wheel spins) instead, unless all you are doing is polishing slabs. Mine is from Covington Engineering but there is also a good one from Lortone that I am aware. I didn't shop around and got mine used when it came up for sale on Kijiji.
I don't use a particular brand of grit. I do make sure that I buy from a trusted source, so I get what I pay for. Last time, I found someone who bought in bulk from a good store and split it up into bags. He made a few dollars for his effort.

I have a question,
I got my hands on a nice size piece of mica loaded with garnet so I watched a couple of your other videos to get the mica off. (Great videos by the way)
My question is how do I polish them up?
I have learned since that it is best to soak the rock in water for a few days which will penetrate the mica and make it easier to remove. Sounds like you got yours off already, so keep it in mind for next time. To polish the garnet, you have to decide if you are trying to keep the crystal shape or not. If you just want a clear shiny rock (assuming it is not weathered beyond salvaging), maybe for cabbing later, the best bet is a rotary rock tumbler with grit. If you want to keep the crystal's shape then it gets more difficult. I have seen others use sandpaper by hand or a flat lap. I did not like the result in the one's that I saw, as it removed some of the crystal and I could tell it had been shaped. I think to start that I would try a vibratory tumbler with corn cob or walnut shell to see if that would shine my crystal without harming it. Let me know what you decide and how it works out.
The hockey cards had me cracking up lol. Do you change the blade in your saw for different kinds of rocks or is one good for all?
I keep the same blade and clean it once in a while by cutting into an old brick. Finally, when the diamonds are completely gone, then it gets replaced.

Hi I watch your videos a lot I live in Ontario I'm a rockhound newly rockhound.I found a lot of minerals that look like diamond but are probably courts but I recently found lots of rocks big large rocks one that has gold and pyrite the other ones have green mineral purple mineral and large stones and medium-sized stones edgit and rounded.can you please help me identify what the minerals are inside of these they're so nice and somehow to Pink to them and some have Aqua light light aqua blue. And also some are yellow and clear White.
There are diamonds in Ontario, but very rare. Quartz is very common. The best test is a hardness test.
@@meMiner they're harder than glass how else can I judge the hardness.also I don't know if it's seeing Stone but I have big large rocks with green and purple Stones small and large and the mass Rock itself is greenish purple how do I identify it
@@the1trish1 Glass is 5 on Moh's hardness scale. Quartz is 7 and diamond is 10. ie. quartz will scratch glass.

The other way to test a diamond is using an electronic tester. I got one from Amazon and use it on rings that I find with my metal detector.

Nothing yet. I am hoping to get access to a kiln and will make her a silver something. But she really likes gold, so that might be another project.
What size is the blade on your saw.
MIne is a 7" blade. I would recommend larger if you can.
