Yes for sure, if I was given the opportunity to fix and restore any car of my choice, it would've been my dads old 1997 Mitsubishi Super Lancer (model was sold only in my country and was based on the same platform as the Lancer Evo 3) that he sold back in 2015. I grew up in that car and I would just love to have the car back and take it to school on the daily with a Spotify Car Thing installed and connected to the AUX and have it be my own little project to take to school and just keep stock. my dad told me that he sold the car because the 4G92 engine it has was starting to die of age and a new motor would've cost him the same as the entire car, so he sold it for a used 2010 Lancer. He isn't regretting selling the car but it hurts for him to see me so sad that I won't be able to drive the same car, according to a country document the car was taken off the road at the end of 2016 and was presumably crushed. Times are changing, but I also love the current Lancer he has.

As you’re probably aware, they do have a bit of a problem blowing head gaskets and head corrosion, I would suggest using one of the cleaners but to follow the directions because you can cause gaskets to start leaking if it’s left in too long, and then after that, I’d put in some high quality coolant, like Nulon, and be sure to use the correct one specified, from memory it’s the green one. You probably also should do a brake system flush and replace with new fluids as it will break down over time, and again, replace with specified fluid (many people think that if the car recommends dot 3, using dot 4 is an upgrade and the new version of dot 3, however dot 4 causes rubbers to swell and leak if the car uses dot 3). Love the AU! Currently own a series 2 AU Falcon XR8 myself, it’s an awesome car. These things are generally pretty bulletproof too, so it sounds like this one had some poor maintenance over it’s life. Definitely worth fixing though. You can’t be a true Aussie until you’ve owned an AU Falcon.
Keep such videos coming. Loved it! I too like fixing & restoring old stuff (be it tech or cars) rather than buying new one. Gives immense satisfaction.
I just discovered your channel. I absolutely loved this video, I was secretly hoping the problem wasn't solved so you'd make another video on an AU falcon :)
i have a mighty au falcon myself that had the same misfiring problem. the fix that worked for me was replacing the ignition leads and the spark plugs. they are such a wonderful car mechanically although they are quite ugly. definitely a good buy. you would also be better off replacing the bootlid with one that never had a rear spoiler as the rust is just going to come back soon. one issue with the series 2 au falcons is a lot of parts are different to the series 1 and series 3. little parts such as fuel filters are different. great video though and looking forward to a few more.
Use a full sized house vacuum on your floor mats from your car, the beater brushes really help to get them cleaned and it's super easy, I use the thing on my couch too
That was awesome :) I absolutely love the Falcons, our family had a S3 wagon (still in the family at 700,000 kms) and my dad has a modified S2 ute. That cooling system was absolutely disgusting but sounded very pleasing to clean.
every time i see this car it just makes me smile. you see this car all the time in australia, among the mazdas, toyotas, hyundai's and other common cars. they just make me happy.
Drove an AU wagon for 6 years and it never missed a beat, ugly, but spacious and reliable - though i never had to clean out the cooling system! Great work on sorting it out, i'm sure it will last plenty more kms.
I had to replace the altinator on my BA Falcon a few weeks ago. I did not want to remove the fans so I ended up buying a cheap 1/2' to 3/8' socket adaptor and welding it to a piece of 50mmx5mm think flatbar. Worked a treat!!!!
@@holdenvtseries2274 Better engine, better build quality, it looked like crap but in all other aspects it was superior, more AU's on the road now than VT's
@@holdenvtseries2274 Well, wherever I go I always see more AU's I work in Geelong and see way more AU's there too, VT is defs the prettier of the two but in terms of the 6's the intech is a far more refined and reliable unit, that's why the Taxi industry selected them. I know a TAXI fleet owner from Sydney and he only once ordered a few commodores for trial and he told me never again as they they just didn't last as long.

Really great video, admire your perseverance! Was really hoping you'd get to the bottom of the issue and like you, as soon as I saw that camshaft sensor wire, I knew you'd cracked it. Great work!
I highly encourage it! As long as the engine or transmission isn't ruined, or the body isn't rusted away, go straight ahead! I will tell you though you will have some moments where you get angry as the problem isn't as easy as it seems like it was in this video, it took quite awhile in real time I'm sure for him to finally figure out why it would have that issue running after it warmed up, and you will have tricky situations like that if you do get into it especially since it is an old car and may have strange issues that aren't so straightforward. Very fun to fix up if you take the time and know what to look for.
My 07 Mercedes had the exact same issue. It ran rough when it warmed up and stalled at idle. Camshaft position sensor was broken apart completely. Got a new one installed and that solved all of my problems
I just love how this guy takes old tech that others would simply just recycle, trash, or send to a junkyard without a second thought and breathes new life into it.
Gotta love the lads at GG Ultra Tune, Ben is a good bloke and Matt is a complete legend always take my cars there if I need anything I can’t (or can’t be fucked) doing.
Thanks to YT popping this vid in my rec's today, I've since watched it twice, started searching Facebook Marketplace for a auto-transmission for under $4K AUD within a 100km drive of me, and started prepping a Marketplace ad for the manual-transmission X-Trail I inherited from my dad after he passed earlier this year.
Loved this video, was super cool seeing this old au falcon getting some much needed love. Gotta love the old Intech, they really never die. With the new parts this car should run well for a long time!
Gotta love these older Fords, bought a 1994 Probe in June & it ran just as badly as the Falcon Misfires, severe loss of power & not willing to increase engine speed above 2500rpm Faul spark plugs, plug wires & a completely chewed up distributor rotor were the main culprits! Something to keep in mind is that the 2.0l 16v Mazda engines in these also need their idle & air/fuel mixture set right. Take it to the old Mazda garage close to you & ask if they can adjust it, they should have a special tool to do so. Ever since it runs like a dream! Completely rust free, bonestock baselevel car in bright red and we love it :)
Five years ago I purchased a WK Statesman (2003) had the same seat belt pillar adjustments. My first Holden. No rust, front and side air bags. Cruise Control, climate control, etc. The V6 engine had done 300K highway klm. Now 350K. I have probably spent a $1500 in that time. New alternator, water pump. Serpentine Belt and pulleys , Disc pads. New tyres. . Gets 7.5 litres 100 klm on the freeway. The kicker is it cost me $500 initially to purchase. So there are bargains out there if you look and can do your own work.
Nathan, my 1997 Ford pickup truck was misfiring when hot and would also stall out when stopping. I had to replace all 8 of my spark plugs (gapped correctly, of course). No issues since. These old Ford’s are good when they work, but finding what’s wrong with them can be an absolute chore. Anything, and I mean _anything_ can cause them to work incorrectly, lol.
Always good to see the mighty AU Falcon about. The bootlid rusting like it did, that is a problem with AU's so you'd be bound to see a few like that, ones with the spoilers get like that. And one reason i've heard as to why the AU copped the criticism it did, is with the base model Series I Forte, you have a look at the standard grilles on them, and you'd see why it was disliked & a thing that was done, is some people replaced that grille with the egg-crate type one found on the AU Utes as well. Just a story i heard about, but yes was certainly a different design, i've never thought it was ugly, is a good-looking one & certainly has gained a nice following in recent years. Got a decent few AU's around where i live, members of my family have owned some as well, one being a Series I or II XR8 Ute, that things got up & went pretty good. Was a cheapo one you got here, with a bit over 260,00 on the clock (around the same distance my 2007 VE SSV Ute has traveled too), but is till a good one you got there. Will be a decent car there for however long you have it there for too nathan.
I personally thought the AU even the base was an improvement over the previous model with it's yankee Ford Taurus grille, except the xr bug eyes, they really didn't translate over well, and you really need a spoiler or the rear end looks too droopy. So I was still luke warm until I saw a T series in a magazine. T series blue and front end + XR Havoc kit rear end would look sweet
@@s8wc3 Yeah, is a nice improvement over the EL Falcon, and the XR style headlights on the AU, wouldn't be to everyone's tastes, the standard ones do look better most of the time. Hadn't though the rear end of an AU sedan looked too droopy without a spoiler, but can kind of see what you'd mean by that. Never had thought the AU looked bad or anything either, was always a nice looking one. And along with that blue plus the havoc kit, does make for a pretty nice looking AU as well.

Awesome vid 😇 you seem to have figured out these cars in 20 minutes what took me a few years! Just FYI - that cheap coolant will cause further rust if you wish to keep the car long term. Coolant is a clever bit of chemistry and worth looking into if needed
Another trick to clean the radiator coolant expansion tank is to fill it with some sand + water & shake it vigorously. That'll get rid of all the rust stains inside.

It is absolute content gold for me to watch youtubers pick up AU's. Please keep it coming!
It be awesome to see you restore this .
Please keep these car videos consistent. They are a lot of fun and greatly presented by you!
Loved this video mate, great detail. I believe it's great doing different types of videos that aren't necessarily tech related, we follow you and watch your videos cause we love your production quality and delivery, this can carry over to so many different fields. I think as long as you're passionate about it, we will enjoy what you put out. Thanks for sharing.
So here’s the thing, im a 16 year old who loves cars and computers, so obviously I’ve always loved your tech videos, but doing things with a car, that just kicks you right to the top!
Jack , l had an xe falcon gl , l' m
sorry l sold it , cos my brother
gave me an M B more trouble
than it was worth sadly😞
Keep such videos coming. Loved it! I too like fixing & restoring old stuff (be it tech or cars) rather than buying new one. Gives immense satisfaction.
I just discovered your channel. I absolutely loved this video, I was secretly hoping the problem wasn't solved so you'd make another video on an AU falcon :)
Please keep doing these!! Been watching you for years, and this was the best surprise ever!
i have a mighty au falcon myself that had the same misfiring problem. the fix that worked for me was replacing the ignition leads and the spark plugs. they are such a wonderful car mechanically although they are quite ugly. definitely a good buy. you would also be better off replacing the bootlid with one that never had a rear spoiler as the rust is just going to come back soon. one issue with the series 2 au falcons is a lot of parts are different to the series 1 and series 3. little parts such as fuel filters are different. great video though and looking forward to a few more.
The series 2 and 3 are identical apart from the indicators, trim levels and oil pressure sensors.
@@HardlineHunter no they arent
Use a full sized house vacuum on your floor mats from your car, the beater brushes really help to get them cleaned and it's super easy, I use the thing on my couch too
That was awesome :) I absolutely love the Falcons, our family had a S3 wagon (still in the family at 700,000 kms) and my dad has a modified S2 ute. That cooling system was absolutely disgusting but sounded very pleasing to clean.
every time i see this car it just makes me smile. you see this car all the time in australia, among the mazdas, toyotas, hyundai's and other common cars. they just make me happy.
This man went from restoring my grandpa's Computer collection, to literally restoring a flippin ford.
Give this man respect gentlemen!
Yup, I'm hooked. I generally don't like car repair videos, but your computer repair style commentary and editing carries over perfectly!
NOICE MATE!!! The Ford Falcon is probably one of the coolest cars by Ford, except for the Mustang
Drove an AU wagon for 6 years and it never missed a beat, ugly, but spacious and reliable - though i never had to clean out the cooling system! Great work on sorting it out, i'm sure it will last plenty more kms.
Need to get RCR to do a review of this if he ever gets to Australia.
he's done a BA but yeah he's gotta try a true blue AU
This was brilliant! Very nice work, most car repair vids lack this level of cinematography so it was really cool to see. cheers
did you fill the oil tank up with enough eucalyptus oil?
You gotta get the eucalyptus to methanol ratio juuust right lmao
I had to replace the altinator on my BA Falcon a few weeks ago. I did not want to remove the fans so I ended up buying a cheap 1/2' to 3/8' socket adaptor and welding it to a piece of 50mmx5mm think flatbar. Worked a treat!!!!
Better car than the VT. Every modern car has adjustable seat belt height, well at least every one I have been in.
@@holdenvtseries2274 Better engine, better build quality, it looked like crap but in all other aspects it was superior, more AU's on the road now than VT's
@@holdenvtseries2274 hardly ever see any VT's plenty of Aus.
@@holdenvtseries2274 Melbourne
@@holdenvtseries2274 Well, wherever I go I always see more AU's I work in Geelong and see way more AU's there too, VT is defs the prettier of the two but in terms of the 6's the intech is a far more refined and reliable unit, that's why the Taxi industry selected them.
I know a TAXI fleet owner from Sydney and he only once ordered a few commodores for trial and he told me never again as they they just didn't last as long.
Car guy here who came for the computer fixing content... couldn't be happier with the car content as well! Would love to see more like this, great job man!
Love the car content!!!
Gorgeous engine. Have to love a big straight six. Hope you post more videos of this, like oil change and other repairs/service
Good for towing. Not so great for daily driving these days though, costs too much in fuel and rego
@@StephenDeTomasithere good gas and okay on petrol
How much RAM does it have?
Really great video, admire your perseverance! Was really hoping you'd get to the bottom of the issue and like you, as soon as I saw that camshaft sensor wire, I knew you'd cracked it. Great work!
I wanna buy a cheap car now..... this looked fun to fix
Got a new one installed and that solved all of my problems
we need more car content!
I just love how this guy takes old tech that others would simply just recycle, trash, or send to a junkyard without a second thought and breathes new life into it.
love ur vids fan keep up the good work
Gotta love the lads at GG Ultra Tune, Ben is a good bloke and Matt is a complete legend always take my cars there if I need anything I can’t (or can’t be fucked) doing.
6:24 seems like someone's a little too used to manual cars lmao
Thanks to YT popping this vid in my rec's today, I've since watched it twice, started searching Facebook Marketplace for a auto-transmission for under $4K AUD within a 100km drive of me, and started prepping a Marketplace ad for the manual-transmission X-Trail I inherited from my dad after he passed earlier this year.
I really liked this video, first time I see someone on a car actually care to properly clean the cooling system
Loved this video, was super cool seeing this old au falcon getting some much needed love. Gotta love the old Intech, they really never die. With the new parts this car should run well for a long time!
Gotta love these older Fords, bought a 1994 Probe in June & it ran just as badly as the Falcon
Misfires, severe loss of power & not willing to increase engine speed above 2500rpm
Faul spark plugs, plug wires & a completely chewed up distributor rotor were the main culprits!
Serpentine Belt and pulleys ,
Disc pads. New tyres.
Great troubleshooting! Most people would’ve given up and re listed the AU back on marketplace. Well done for persevering.
You should do a lot more of these. As a mechanic it warms my heart.
That was great. I've really got to admire your persistence and patience in fixing that beast! Well done.
I've been watching your vidoes for years but I have never expected you to make a video like this. I loved every second of this video! You branching out to other content and making vidoes of your own liking and showing us that process was amazing! I especially loved the father and son moment in the video as well. Please, make more vidoes like these in the future! Of course, if your able to afford it. Thank you again for making such a fun and interesting video to watch! 💙
Great to see some car content too, old cars and a horde of vintage computers are two of my main hobbies, so right up my alley!
You can use Forscan and an elm326 obd2 scanner to scan AU.
The AU used a different protocol (J1850) to OBD2. BA on ward standarised with OBD2.
Impressive. This looks so much more complicated than computers. And especially things are not easy to get to. It makes working with a small Mini ITX case look easy.
Goodness the patience you have is phenomenal!!
I would’ve gave up at “The engine misfires”
I usually loathe videos such as this, yours was informative, entertaining and really well narrated, good on ya mate ...
The mighty AU Falcon. That's a nice looking care you've got there. I have a serious 2 ute, 375000km and still going strong.
Awesome vid 😇 you seem to have figured out these cars in 20 minutes what took me a few years!
Just FYI - that cheap coolant will cause further rust if you wish to keep the car long term.
Coolant is a clever bit of chemistry and worth looking into if needed
Never expected car content on this channel, but I'm all for it! I'd totally be down for more car content!
This was satifying to watch! I've been a viewer of your channel for a few years now and didn't expect this. Keep it up mate!
I love the reach for the shifter like it was manual when trying to speed up
I never thought this would become a car challenge and I definitely didn't think it'd start with an AU Falcon. What an icon
This was amazing
Being able to see you use eucalyptus oil to clean the car is what I never knew I needed
Another trick to clean the radiator coolant expansion tank is to fill it with some sand + water & shake it vigorously. That'll get rid of all the rust stains inside.
I miss working on a falcon. I am currently a mechanic at Subaru but man do I miss my falcons, I am saving up for a BA. look after them and they will last forever. Awesome video.
Funny how I'm seeing you basically rebuild your AU Falcon after watching Wade (Dankpods) struggle with his on his Garbage Time page. Those Falcons take a lot of abuse but that sludge was relentless. Glad you got it fixed.
9:16 is a MAP sensor, easy way to tell is if it's before the throttlebody it's a MAF if it's after the throttlebody it'll be a MAP.
Never expected a tech channel turned into an automotive channel but it's actually quite decent to watch!
Now the time and effort to make/edit this video has to be commended..... Definitely deserves your view and like!
