7:42 Core Duo Mac Mini often comes with a socketed CPU and can be force flashed a newer EFI from a later model Mac Mini, making them compatible with a Core 2 Duo CPU upgrade. Then put in something like a T7600 and you get a fairly respectable Core 2 Duo Mac Mini.

I agree. I've used my 2006 mini as a NAS for over 3 years (it was owned by a company before that), and while the vents on the bottom got caked with dust, it had served me well, but now I'm moving to a custom NAS for the convenience of my parents, as they really wanted to clean the living room.
Edit: the Mini is accessible from the outside world at mustardormayo.404.mn , but not for much longer. To prove its running on Mac OS 10.6.8, you could try to trigger a 404 error there. If it shows the standard Apache 404 page instead, that means I'd have already routed Web requests to the new server.

I have a 2007 mac mini with 2 gb ram and a 160 gb hard drive. I looked at he specs and they weren't that bad really. It could even be upgraded to 4gb memory and I think already had a 64bit processor. I was thinking about upgrading and putting linux or windows on but i may keep the mac os old that it is and see if I can get it to the highest one with firmware updates and turn it into a server. I Mean in had a firewire port and 4 usb ports. I should be able to do something with that. Or even turn it into a printer server for the house. Options options!

(From MacTracker): One memory slot for a single 184-pin PC-2700 DDR333 SDRAM (PC-3200 supported; however it will run at only 333 MHz). I mean, these things are dirt cheap.
No wonder it only lasted the family four (4) years. Shameful. 😪

Best use for a G4 mac mini is a media center. Install OSX 10.4 Tiger. Use a DVI -> HDMI cable to plug this into your TV set. Add your favorite movies to iTunes, and launch Front Row (one of the best ten-foot user interfaces). Then kick back with your infrared remote. Hint: If you lost the original IR remote that came with the mac mini, you can program a logitech harmony or similar universal remote to control Front Row.

growing up in the 90s i was completely accustomed to computers coming with crts, keyboards, mice, and speakers. since there was no youtube and the only exposure to serious pc hardware was through magazines and a family members refurbishing business i didn't really think that anyone bought computers without displays included unless they were buying a super specific computer or building a beast. when i saw the mac mini for the first time i saw the price and had to get one. the only reason i didn't get one was because it did not come with a monitor.
still this thing would be better used as an awesome itx hackintosh build.

I recently acquired a G4 Mac Mini. Mine is a 1.25 GHz model like yours, but it came with the maximum 1 GB of RAM, and I installed a 500 GB M.2 SSD dual-booting 10.4 Tiger and a modified version of Mac OS 9.
Tiger runs well on this machine, but Mac OS 9 boots and runs lightning-fast.
My most powerful official Mac OS 9 machine would probably be my faster Titanium PowerBook G4 (my Cube has a more powerful 32 MB GPU, but this TiBook has a faster 667 MHz CPU), but my most powerful unofficial Mac OS 9 machine is, by far, my Mac Mini. :D

The main problem with older computers is the browsers and the popular websites like Facebook, Amazon, RUclips etc which don't run with all their features on older browsers. The recent versions of all browsers can't be installed in very old computers.
Beyond that is not very difficult to find older software or games which can run perfectly on older computers.
As long your are satisfied with old office suites, old photo processing software and old games etc, why not using an old computer.
It's all about what you really need.

I was recently given a late 2005 Apple PowerBook G4 15" Aluminum by a friend of mine. It's the 1.67GHz model, and was notorious for burning out one of the RAM sockets, leaving you with only 1GB of DDR RAM to use. Fortunately, the one I was given has survived over 14 years (!) of use without any problems; both RAM slots still work, so I'm still able to utilize the 2GB of DDR RAM. The battery and backlight for the keyboard both don't work, but it's still chugging along rather nicely.

the max they can go up to is 10.8 yes you can go higher but it wouldn’t have graphics exenteration so everything becomes choppy and unstable. the reason is beta 1 was supported the older macs but with beta 2 they dropped support for them so someone ported the KEXT files over. 10.9 had no support at all for the older macs so the GPU kexts are modded10.8 ones and don’t work all the time

With an older version of chrome, plus office 2007 its a very usable machine for basic tasks like email, office work and you-tube playback, as long as 480p is all you are looking for.

+1 completely agree on iMovie HD: now to get good gradent colors in a simple slideshow you have to get final cut pro X. However on that mac mini I would recommend the 1gb ram and SSD upgrade, this make this kind of machine useable for older softwares like quark Xpress or omnis applications never ported on higher versions, and also it can delightfully print on older printers. I still use several G4, G5 and ppc minis at work for specific tasks.

The problem that you can not get your monitor to work with DVIi is that as you can see on the back it has the 4 pins at the cross, this is your analog signal. and most modern DVI connection do not have the extra pins. so your mac display may still be only outputting an analog signal through the DVI port, and why you can get a signal with only VGA and not DVi.

I bought this so I have one working Mac for now.
    $45.
Don't know if it is upgradeable or not but I can connect it to my 48 inch Sony Bravia and I am getting a small Apple display and Logitech solar keyboard.

    iMovie HD is great.
That’s where I learned to edit. Our media teacher actually gave us a way to downgrade from new iMovie to it when I got my iMac in 2008

Your Videos seriously inspire me. I originally wanted to do my RUclips Channel on Reviewing Products (Mostly Records, Cassettes, etc...) But i'm just on this weird path right now of uncertainty on where to steer my channel, considering i've been busy moving out and lacking content.
I want to say your reviews are always incredible, and the cinematic shots look professionally done. What camera do you use? :)

Plug the Ethernet into an other Mac and enable internet/WiFi sharing over a LONG cable. I tried putting Linux on my MacBook some time ago and it’s a real pain in the tuchus to get it functioning specifically for a dualboot even with rEFIt. There’s an osOS called Elementary that is designed to resemble and function like OSX/macOS, but I haven’t checked it out yet.

The image shift to the right that you mentioned is because of the monitor. You needed to use the monitor's Auto Adjust button or menu setting to center the image!

I currently own a 2007 Model, maxed out, 4GB ram, 2.33 GHz T7600 SSD, new paste, and a nice clean up. It runs 10.8.4 blazing fast but anything newer is unusable. I bought a Late 2009 model and I am going to toss in my SSD and 8GB of ram from an old with doss laptop. Just spend the extra 50$, you will NOT regret it.

I still use a 2009 Mac Mini. It has Mountain Lion.
I have 4GB RAM and got it to recognise a 500GB SSD. Couldn’t get it to see 8GB RAM sadly.
    2.66GHz Core 2 Duo.
Works fine driving two 1600x1200 monitors.

Hey Luke great work as always. Just curious on what you would consider to be the best bang for your buck when it comes to buying a used macbook pro? 13" or 15" it doesnt matter. Maybe you could start a best bang for your buck series?

Resolution has to do with graphics . If the GPu or the iGPu doesn’t support 1080p then it will scale to the biggest resolution available.

holy dust bunnies! I had been using my 2006 Core Duo as a DVD player until a few months ago when the drive mech started to crap out. It would work if I shook and bumped it while the DVD was loading. It works fine for playing media files using VLC and even NES emulation. Considering putting and SSD into it and maybe upgrading the processor to get a few more years out of it.

I even have one left still working witch is an overclocked G4 (soldering method) with 64mb of vram 1gb ram, and at the time it played WoW pretty good. the drive is and ide to M2 adapter with a 64gb M2 boot time is comparable to a current intel i7 box, I mostly use it for classic apps. And for browsing I use 10.4.1i safari or TenFourFox. For a long time this was my apache php postgresql web server. (ssd made a 1600% improvement on that) yearly open and removal of dust mandatory.

However, not sure if i can say the samething for my mac g4 laptop. Can't even do youtube watching anymore. ;( maybe do another video for alternative os for older macs. Maybe a walkthrough or recommendations. !

You should attribute the display issues to the display, not the source. HDMI is a standard that many cheap monitors do not fully support even today. Umm, the 2005 mini DOES in fact have wifi but it's the slower 802.11 a/b.
