  • This Mac Mini i got it on Auction for about $20. I done this project because i want to turn this Mac Mini into a useful computer again and to show you, how you can done for a cheap. The CPU i got it from eBay, cost about $1.70 and the RAM i take out from my very old non-working laptop. I know isn't great computer but is enough for basic stuff or instead android box.

    The 2006 and 2007 Mac Minis were the last Mac Minis to have a cpu that wasn't soldered to the motherboard and people have been upgrading the cpu since they came out. Good luck doing this upgrade on any Mac Mini that came out in 2009 or later.

    i did the same upgrade to my 2006 iMac 4,1. But i used the faster T7600 at 2.33Ghz. Also, you can get that Mac to run up to Mavericks with full QE/CI GPU acceleration with ParrotGeek's patch. He also compiled the current Firefox for Mavericks.

    It does my old kit basher's heart good to see someone doing this kind of thing. The moment that someone says "You can't do that" or "Take what we give you-or else." I consider it a personal challenge to prove them wrong. If anyone tries to tell you that you "can't" do something with something you own, spit in their eye, and do it anyhow, just for the satisfaction.

    I'm impressed to see all of this upgreadability. I had not so time ago a laptop from this era and I had to dessist to upgrade it. It had a 32-bit Core Duo running at 1.73 GHz, but due to socket limitations, it was impossible to upgrade to a 64-bit Core 2 Duo. Also I had to stick with 2 GB of RAM. But what surprissed me the most of this video is that this little mac had SATA interface and you can put an SSD! My old laptop had only PATA connection, so any upgrade in that field could had been useless...
    Core Duo was an strange thing. I think they were the last 32-bit desktop CPUs before the massive adoption of the 64-bit architecture and they are now completely pointless.

    Very good information. I have the same Mac Mini, used it many years as Media Center. Later then used Bootcamp, put a SSD inside and it is still running Windows 10 reasonably well. Biggest drawback ist the 2GB RAM limitation, so I might try your suggestion with the CPU change if I can get hold of one.
    That little machine is 14 years old now and still usable. I did the same with an 27 inch iMac which I got cheap on Ebay. It's my wife's favourite PC because of the display. I just don't like Apple's policy to try and force users to depreciate perfectly usable hardware.

    I have a 2007 Mac mini running OS X Yosemite, and I just disabled kext signing, and then everything worked fine. The graphics are not choppy anymore, and I have working sound, although WiFi doesn’t detect any networks, and nothing is transparent in the OS. I don’t know if this would work for a Core Duo Mac mini, but you should definitely give it a try. The command to disable kext signing is: sudo nvram boot-args=kext-dev-mode=1
    EDIT: Upgraded it to El Capitan, still works fine.

    What about replacing the spinning drive with an SSD?

  • @ryanwakebradtelle8682
    @ryanwakebradtelle8682 4 года назад

    I've been thinking of a project that fits in the same form factor and has a battery backup that continues to charge during a blackout.
    You know how the phone lines have power running through them. You could easily build a USB charger that isn't more than three or four times faster than basic charging. But could charge multiple devices and run a phone or raspberry pie running your internet.
    And a phone is probably more powerful then the Mac mini, if you're willing to spend more money then you spent.

    • @ryanwakebradtelle8682
      @ryanwakebradtelle8682 4 года назад

      The reason the power works during the power outage is because the phone companies have their own generators.
      And you'll need a battery bank with pass-through charging, that means when the battery is 100% charged the power skips the battery and goes directly to the devices plugged into the battery. This prevents wear and tear.

    Woah I thought it was not possible to upgrade the Mac Mini's proc, nicely done Andrew! *thumbs up*
    Also, is it possible to swap the superdrive in Mac Mini?
    And it seems the osx mavericks and later really did need a true newer system even though the CPU is already up to the task

I am glad we can do this because apple charges away to much for newer macs. I wonder how apple thinks about this.

    I'm not disliking the video, but please listen- DO NOT EVER APPLY THERMAL COMPOUND LIKE THAT. When radiator applied, it will definetly create air bubbles between cpu. Air buubles are bad. Just apply little 'pea' shape paste and applying the radiator it will spread it by itself leaving no air bubbles.
