I know this is a two year old comment but I have just started this a hobby and would have to say as an Aussie that the Kiwis are never ever forgotten you are our brothers!!
Looks good! I've used the Serapim Sepia and Agrax Earthshade on desert figures and vehicles and I tend to prefer the Agrax Earthshade. It is a little darker but it seems to add a more deeper shade for washes. The Sepia is great but it needs more coats and looks a little light to me. Thanks for the tutorial and advice on the colors. It helps a lot.
Nice job. Painting a box of the Perry's now. Just an FYI - the models have a gaiter molded just above the boot which should be painted the same color as the webbing. So the black boot is much lower than shown.
It did take me a little bit to realise what I was doing, unfortunately! I figured it out once I was looking at some of the Artizan metals and realised that the gaiters were replicated across both miniatures. Whoops! This guy'll just stand at the back of his section... ;)
The Western Desert is my favourite theatre selector for Bolt Action. With the new gentleman's war starter set it is an opportunity to expand my DAK & start a commonwealth army, I'm thinking South Africans as there contribution in WW2 is greatly underestimated.
Good video mate. I would love to see an updated version of this on a warlord games model with the standard helmet though to see what you'd potentially do differently? Thank you for the video!
Nice video. Just a thought here; you can use seraphim sepia on the uniform, and then use agrax earthshade on skin, wood, whatever. You don't have to use the one colour of shade across the whole model.
Going to be painting up my 8th army with some of them having the Aussie slouch hats. Would they be the same colour you've used here or a different / lighter cour perhaps?
As far as I've seen most people approach the Aussie hats, they were nearer to the same colour as the uniform. Honestly, I couldn't really confirm - checking a photo of a surviving example or similar might be more use!
Punishment is running into both AU and NZ sailors on leave in New Orleans. Especially when you join them for a few drinks, which of course turns into a competition. I don't recommend it.
Great video, I've been using this and the Maori video as a guide for my Creforce. One question though; the Perry kit has the Officer in a jumper, what colour would you suggest for it?
Great video! Very helpful indeed, did the hats come in the box set or are they in a different set as I can't find them on the Perry site. Only Sikh/Australian/Burma. Many thanks
Here's our winner! www.perry-miniatures.com/product_info.php?products_id=3174&osCsid=4thl0dgs30pm14fuml1pq65m93 The NZ hats are slightly pricier since they come with Freyberg as well. Luckily, you'll only really need the one set of hats since they weren't worn as commonly as the turbans or Aussie slouch hats, and Freyberg makes for a neat artillery FOO miniature to use in games if you're playing Bolt Action with them. :D
Thank you so much for this video! tipped me over the edge to fly into bolt action! Hopefully you get to making an DAK video one day so I can help my brother get his own collection going! "Edit" - Found the DAK video haha. Just a note, If you want to go with the red hat strap, any suggestions?
I was actually just about to come back and link you to the DAK video! :D Glad you found it, and thanks for stopping in! As for the hat band, I've painted it a couple times and the secret's really patience and thin paint. If you wiggle or find your band's too thick you can go back over to tidy up with the beige instead.
Didn't forget them, just didn't mention them; I was aiming to highlight more the units that are commonly left out of collections like the Greeks and South Africans, where plenty of places do specific Sikh and Punjabi miniatures.
@@SonicSledgehammerStudio All good. Being a NZer as well, I'm glad you included the 28th Maori Battalion in your paint scheme. Great detailing. Keep up the great vids.
How would you do his skin to make him look like he's been living out in the sun but not make him too orangy like a Oompa Loompa straight out of Willy Wonkas chocolate factory?
I hadn't realised I'd missed this comment - sorry to leave you hanging! I've found that a dab of Reikland Fleshshade over 'finished' skin works quite well for simulating brisk tanning on white guys. It works best if, after a quick coat of the Reikland Fleshshade, you pick out your final highlights again so that the effect looks a little more muted. You want to be careful applying the shade - painting it on almost like a layer rather than slapping it over like you usually would - but it's a nice, easy and subtle way to introduce a deep, rich red that looks baked in.
Any ideas on how I apply my wash to look as clean as yours? My agrax earthshade always significantly darkens and “dirties” the paint job so the speak. It also smears a fair bit.
In all honesty, best thing to do is give it as long a shake as you can. If you're still getting weird settling and tide marks, you can give a model a satin or even gloss varnish before you shade it, then matt varnish over the top of everything after it's good and dry!
AIEEE Everybody forgets About Africa, the M3 and the P40 :3c Also, just out of curiosity, how do you come up with your color palletes? Like I imagine there's some style guides from the company; but is it just accumulated knowledge? Do you do a lot of prototyping?
The M3 Grant/Lee, you mean? It's such an odd tank, but fairly powerful for its time. High, boxy profile aside, that 75mm main gun gave it a much-needed wallop against German armour. Stranger still to think that when the Sherman arrived in the desert, it was (admittedly briefly) the best tank out there! On the subject of colours, I mostly tend to follow guides that give (mostly) accurate results for the time. What I try and avoid is anything where I have to mix paints; it isn't particularly difficult, but where I can simply dip my brush and get painting straight away is another way to save time. Most WWII-era stuff will have a Vallejo suggestion sheet with it, and a little tweaking knowing the Citadel range usually lets me find an appropriate highlight straight from a pot.
Yeah, makes them look different to the Aussies! I call fake news because the Australians were more well known for their slouch-hat, the only ones other than Gurkhas to wear them, so I think that shoots that rumour down..
awesome, looking to do some Desert Rats soon
Thanks from New Zealand mate! We’re often forgotten in the history books.
Gotta rep the local talent! ;D

Im a flames of war player from NZ and I’m making a gaming table about the battle of Crete
And this was very helpful

Likewise, I tend to think that sharper contrast that Agrax Earthshade offers gives you more you can do to build up the colour again.
Something I feel like I should add to any of those that wish to paint kiwis is that their webbing was keep in its raw canvas, blanco was never issued.
Excellent work..!
Million thanks for sharing..
I’ve just started playing bolt action , 8th army variety is what attracted me to this theatre

Anything's a competition when you've got both halves of the ANZACs involved! 🤣
Great video, I've been using this and the Maori video as a guide for my Creforce. One question though; the Perry kit has the Officer in a jumper, what colour would you suggest for it?
Something like Khaki Grey is a good choice, or US Field Drab for a lighter, more washed-out and faded look!
What colour would you do the South African pith helmets? Same as the brodie?

Fantastic. Thanks mate, this video has been really helpful for painting my axis and allies miniatures. What paint colour did you use for the tank?
If I'm remembering correctly, for the Allied stuff in the desert it'd be Vallejo Dark Sand. Hope that helps!

will this guide be good for the bolt action minis ? great video :)
I was hoping to get my hands on some of them soon, but I'd imagine it will work fine with the different miniatures. :)

My mistake! I honestly thought I'd mentioned Greece, but that might have been in a bit that got clipped. :/
Poor kiwis. The Americans think they're English and everyone else thinks they're Australian
Yep but at times it can be to our advantage, kia kaha
