I grew up in So Cal. Listened to khj, 10-q, etc. In 1978, KHJ was giving away $100.00 to the 100th caller. I was that 100th caller. I was 14 at the time. I'll never forget that. That was a lot of money .
This guy was for me when I started my stuff in the radio biz like an indirect mentor...back in the 70's on Super 64.KFI 50 THOUSAND Watts strong west the U.S. continental devide...thanks for the snap shot..of in my view one of thee top of the top Jocks in radio...along another great then also from kfi radio ...Eric Chase..
Charlie Fox was incredible and possibly the best Drake Boss Jock next to Steele there ever was? Worked with Charlie at a Radio Network in Hollywood along with other KHJ Alumni. Fox worked at some of the finest stations in the Country & was a genuine person. So many creeps in the business like Beau Weaver, Mr. Rock and Roll, & Rick Dees.
My first radio job was at KHJ. I answered phones for Rick Dees and Charlie Fox and I became friends. When I got my first on air gig in Lompoc, CA he'd critique my airchecks and help guide me through the early days of my 45 year career. Wish I knew how to contact him now. I've heard he lives in Las Vegas, but have no idea how to find him.
Rick is in the old folks home now, being close to 100, many people didn't know with all that makeup. Meanwhile Charlie Fox, who is NOT Sonny West is enjoying retirement in Las Vegas. I worked in Lompoc as well for two days at KLOM!
A FELLOW DJ and i met Charlie when he was known as 'Sonny Fox' down at KCBQ, San Diego, one day on our way to Tijuana, B.C., for some R&R..................................
KHJ 930 am later became smokin' oldies 930 like around 1982 if not mistaken right????? Can someone correct me please???? Cuz it has been along while and can't recall exactly the year but only thing I remember they played some fine oldies doowops and R&B music unfortunately the very same year 1982 or 1983 I left LA n moved back to Boston!!!!!!
You undoubtedly remember KHJ going country in 1980. I was into country at the time, so I probably would've been listening to 570 KLAC when the switch was made. I probably would've at least sampled KHJ, just out of curiosity. I'm a lifelong easterner, having lived in West Virginia for all of my nearly 56 years.
KHJ had turned into country music at the end of 1980 and then Boss Radio returned on April Fools day of 1983 and then it flipped to KHJ car radio 80's format in late 1984
It's unfair to call it tired ... it had been destroyed by multiple bad programmers, but the PD during this era was Chuck Martin, and he had what KHJ needed. The ratings skyrocketed ... and then the country advisors convinced management to go you try IN SPITE of the ratings. A shame; KHJ might still be around had Martin stayed in charge. He's still a programming genius.

I listened to KHJ in the 60's and bought the KHJ Golden Oldies double album which I still have.
Awesome DJ, absolutely great programming. Every song good in this clip. When radio was fun and had personality. Miss it
Hard to believe that this is almost 40 years ago. Great stuff.
One of my favorites and underrated jocks. Thanks for sharing, great hearing him again
Oh my gosh, loved listening to Charlie Fox on KHJ, KFI and KUTE 102. He was so smooth on the air.
A fan from the KFI days on. One of the best ever. Thanks Charlie for the memories and thanks for the post.
KRLA 1110 NEVER SAW KHJ COMMING💯💯⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The very first promo, voiced by the legend, Paul Frees.

If that was on FM, the station would have been a winner... Plenty of energy, yet mature enough to grab 18-34.

Curious why you mention Rick Dees in that mix?
@@steved3387 He was a terrible man, a terrible man, like Napoleon, even though I'm sure some people liked him. Napoleon that is...

Charlie retired to Las Vegas and was doing well last I heard! I think Rick Dees is no longer with us?
@@sfel10 Thanks for the confirmation on Charlie, but Rick is still around.

I remember Charlie from 68 WRKO. One of their all time best in a long list of excellent personalities. Where are the Cat Simon Airchecks from KHJ?
If you want to know how good American DJ';s are , just listen to English radio - you will be yawning within a minute.
