How NOT to design a Gas Mask

  • A look at How NOT to design a Gas Mask, in this video we look at the failed Cheek-filter design gas masks, where rather than taking an external cannister type filter, which was common prior to the design of the American M17 respirator, the mask has two small filters which sit inside the cheeks of the mask.
    The filters cannot be easily replaced as the filter pouches are smaller than the filter to keep the filter from falling out.
    The filters are smaller than normal 40mm or 60mm filters so expire faster.
    The filters are constantly exposed to the air once installed and therefore can expire prior to coming into contact with chemical agents.
    Worst of all the filter cannot be changed without taking the mask off, if the filter expires during a chemical weapon attack the wearer is doomed.
    The masks featured in the video are the:
    Bulgarian PDE-1 Gas mask.
    Czechoslovakian M10 Gas mask.
    Czechoslovakian M10m Gas mask.
    Polish MP-4 Gas Mask.
    American XM28 "Grasshopper" Gas Mask.
    Soviet PBF Gas Mask.
    While the XM28 and the PBF are better than all of the other cheek filter masks they are still a flawed design.
    I also compare the American M9 Respirator and the British Light anti-gas mask, both good examples of lightweight 60mm masks available prior to the design of the M17 mask.

    I was taught that one of the reasons for the cheek filter style was that in instances of hand to hand combat, one could grab the opposition's filter or hose and pull the mask off or cut the hose. I'm not sure how often that would come up, though, in actual combat.

      Also another reason was if in the prone position and shooting yiur weapon, that outside filter can get snagged on an object. Like tree branches a d break the seal.
      Personally that mask (M17 ) series was issued to me and I still prefer this mask. To the M40 that was made of silicone and needed a 2nd skin to protect the mask.
      Also, if only your rifle with no ammo, I'd swing the weapon right at the exposed filter and break it off of the gas mask!
      End of enemy!

    "I am in an environment that is contaminated by a nerve agent so potent that a single drop of it on my skin or in my mask could kill me. I have spent all day in this environment which means that the outside of my protection gear is likely covered in the stuff. But it's time to change my filter so I will now take off my mask and attempt put in a new filter by handling it and the inside of my mask with my contaminated hands while closing my eyes and holding my breath"
    "Yup. I see nothing wrong with this scenario" Said at least one person working in an office and being paid way more than the poor bastards who ended up having to use the deathtraps that are those things.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  6 лет назад +12

      To be fair on the cheek filter masks the filter was never meant to be changed in a gas scenario, but the issue was, you had very little time to evacuate compared to canister masks, lots of people have this wishful thinking fallacy with the cheek filter masks saying, "You'd always be evacuated in time." but how do they know that, if high quantities of phosgene and chlorine were used the mask could become useless in minutes.

    • @phant0
      @phant0 6 лет назад +3

      Not to mention it is perfectly possible that in many situations it could take days before the poor bastards can get decontaminated and safely remove their protection gear.

    I was a chemical guy in the US army during the late 90's-early 2000's when we were using the M40 protective mask, and I was the NBC room guy for a few years of my service. The M17 had just been phased out of the regular army, and the national guard were using them. I got to work with an M17 and it was a real pain to change the filters. My uncle was a Desert Storm vet and we discussed how much of a pain these masks were as well. The M40 was a vast improvement over the M17 in my opinion. Back then though, most of the US army had a running joke about the NBC acronym and Chemical warfare in general (NBC = Nuclear, Biological, Chemical, which is now called CBRN = Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear), which was "No Body Cares". That might be why the M17 mask saw service for so long. Even top brass didn't seem to care much about chemical warfare and took a dismissive attitude towards it.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  4 года назад +3

      Yeah it's an interesting thing, some vets tell me they loved the M17 and others hated it, I guess it really depended on if you thought you'd need it and what your job was.
      Also the whole CBRN name change is a bit stupid, I can understand ABC (atomic, biological, chemical) changing to NBC as the hydrogen bomb was invented. But the R in CBRN means Radiological protection, none of this gear offers any protection from x-rays and gamma rays.

    Just a minor nitpick. The tank that was so bad that the School of Tank Technology used it as an example of bad design was the (A38) Valiant Tank. The Covenanter was a cavalry tank designed as a competitor to the Crusader and saw production of 1,771 units. Despite being a fine take of similar capability to the Crusader, the Covenanter never saw service due to having issues with cooling... at a time when the British were almost exclusively fighting on the African front.

I really ought to get a 3M full face mask to test at some point though.

    The Russian ones look pretty beefy. For a moment there I thought it was just a pair of regular filters, but slightly compact due to a thinner shell and more integrated shell (or something comparable to that) and with a "cover" on top (except the cover is part of the mask). Come to think of it, to me that sounds like a more viable prototype. Basically, you have two integrated regular filters, but only one actually active/open at a time, so if it starts to fail for any reason, you don't need to switch anything, you just open up the other one and close the other. Two filters in a row should be enough imo, if you're expecting to be under constant exposure for such a long time it seems more like a job for an air tank than a gas mask.

There is a reason why they cloned these in many countries. Where you in the military? Did you ever operate equipment in tight spaces? Did you ever fire a weapon with a gas mask on? Have you ever had disposed canisters or what you deem as being trash get used against you by the enemy? Like using a disposed canister to be used as improvised explosive devices? Have you ever seen someone waste rounds or waste filters by being scared or being panicked? Have you ever used a gas mask in the bush? Did you ever give any thought about tunnel warfare? Crawl in one with a canister mask and see how that goes. I trained with M17 mask. I don't need no stinkin canister gas mask!

    Honestly the only good thing these cheek filter masks is that they're perfect for cosplay since people wouldn't know if your mask has the filters installed or not. Therefore I won't have to waste any good 40mm filters or use old and/or asbestos-ish filters.(I do just slightly believe that asbestos-ish filters are rather safe as long as it's new and hasn't been damaged). Other than that, good luck finding cheek filters that are new and even if you have those then pray to whatever higher being you believe in or at least hope that the filters haven't been exposed to the air for too long.
    P.S.: If I had the money and skills, I'd open up a company and produce universal 40mm filters in various casing styles like current modern, 70s Soviet, and etc and have them... Idk how to word it... Have them in ABEK-P3 for actual use and in P1 for cosplay use.
    P.P.S.: Asbestos-free of course.

    Little note on the EO-19 - it was intended for military use, but documentation I've seen seems to indicate they were primarily meant for tank crews who were in many cases operating vehicles with their own NBC seals. The intention as far as I understand it was that it was more of a last-ditch option for vehicles that may have been breached by enemy fire when NBC agents were in use, but weren't knocked out entirely. That's the reason for the design of the eyepiece on this type of mask - it's meant to make it easier for a crewman to use the optics on an armored vehicle - as well as the ears - meant to make it easier for the crewman to use a radio headset in the vehicle.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93

    A good idea on paper... just really bad in reality.
    I feel maybe if you had pocket for it to be installed on the outside with a zip or lock to seal it inside, it would be much better. Also If you added perhaps the compartments width wise so a it enters via the side of the pork chop instead??? Probably would be harder to breathe but in combination with two, perhaps it could provide a better service??? Just some ideas on how to improve it.

      A good cheek filter mask sort of exists now called the Avon M50, it has small flat filters that clip onto the mask from the outside, meaning it has a similar profile to the M17 but you can change the filters very quickly.

      I could see the PBF being used by the VDV (paratroopers). My stepfather in the 90s once mentioned something about a parachute ripping the filter off an M9 mask when he noticed one in a picture within the book I was looking at. He was at one point stationed in Europe (Germany) as a paratrooper in the 80s so I suspect that they may have been using M9s there. I suspect the above mentioned problem is one of the reasons for cheek mask designs and why the newest mask designs are in a way, a return to the concept, but with externally accessible filter modules. The M50 essentially solves both problems, however, the M53 does too and is probably the best design.

    Good video, I wonder what sort of work around you could design to fix the issue, or just advance.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 лет назад

      Maybe some sort of zip on the outside of the mask, you unzip it, plug the filter into the gap and rezip it, however, masks like the Avon M50 and Scott GSR sort of have compact cheek style filters.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  7 лет назад

      The M10 has a weird thing I've seen on eBay that in theory means you don't need a cheek filter in it and instead can attach a hose to the filter plug that then attaches to a 40mm filter. Seems a bit of a workaround though when there are plenty of better 40mm masks already available.

    I'll have to take issue with your arguments that the internal cheek mounted filter based mask was so bad. In fact, the cheek mounted filters of the M17 series mask are superior to the cylinder based filters for many applications. My many years of operating with the M40 series made me hate that protruding filter element that disproportionally weighted my head and stressed neck and upper back muscles in long operations such as working the decon line. At least the M17 series mask distributed the weight evenly on the face. Additionally, the M-40 series filter acted as a catch-all for equipment when operating in tight spaces like a fighting vehicle or command post environments. The C2 series filter element stuck out from the face blank and acted as a lever arm that would pull the mask away from the face and compromise the mask seal when operating in a confined environment like a fighting vehicle or command post. I get that, historically, the lower mass of the cheek filters leads to lower protection times than the heavier cylinder filters, but this fit the U.S. doctrine at the time where you would go through a decon usually within six hours of contamination where you could get MOPP relief and change filters if required. Remember that the U.S. doctrine at the time was the "Airland Battle" concept where you were not expected to sit in contaminated areas for that long. The switch to the C2 series filters seemed to be a realization that either you are going to have to fight "dirty" for longer times or just simply a nod to STANAGs. Interestingly, the new generation of protective masks has turned back to the cheek mounted filter elements. The M50 and gives you all the advantages of a cheek mounted filter with the long life of a cylinder filter through modern filter formulations. On the M50, the filters are mounted on the cheeks, but on the outside and designed to last 24 hours in typical battlefield concentrations of CBRN contamination. The filter mounts are self-sealing so you can change them easily in a contaminated environment. Probably what the M17 series should have been if the engineering was up to the task at the time, but I think the M17 design had some thought to the threat and doctrine of the day and was not a lesson on how not to design a protective mask.

    • @Weaponsandstuff93
      @Weaponsandstuff93  6 лет назад +1

      Interesting arguments, I have an M17 coming in the post so am going to be analysing it in comparison to the Communist clones, I've had a few people inform me that the actual M17 is far better in quality than the copies so I'll be able to test that for myself when it arrives.
      I would agree with you though that something like the Avon M50 is the best solution, compact filters that go on each side of the mask externally rather than internally. I have a Scott GSR which is a poor copy of an M50, very bulky and heavy, the filters are almost as big as 40mm filters anyway.
      Maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to find an M50 for sale for an affordable price.

    it is designed to be stream lined,you dont have a bulky filter.
    thats why the americans tried to do a new one with two removable filters that are almost on the level of the cheek.
    the worst problem is the deterioration.
    and most armies even us plan to fight a little if a chemical attack happens so you dont need much. I dont remember the source it might be something about tanks and other machines with NBC protecrion and the soldiers are meant to leave the contaminated area. Not really, the M10 as far as I'm aware has pipes that go to 40mm ports for each cheek but it would cost about $20 to get the two needed, and then you need two filters to attach it to, I think it was designed with rebreathers in mind.
