    a dollar and Jewish Corned Beef on pumper - nickle with sauerkraut and mustard. Even the poorest people could afford buying lunch

    Zamir is awesome. I remember him from No Reservations but he's beyond just that one show. Katz's is pretty good but I'm sorry to say not the bestest ever. I think the nostalgia is a big part of it, and the huge cafeteria size of it is incredible and sort of a shrine. For me, the meat is a bit too salty. I guess I think it takes away from the flavor of what is already delicious.The Katz mustard knife, however, lazily draped across the barrel and full of solid gold mustard is the stuff of dreams. The neighborhood that Katz is in is fun for other reasons but then I hike up the other way to get the best coffee in the whole wide world (and food) from Saul @ Zabars.

      Not many, if any. The dominant foodways in Israel are from the Middle East, brought by Jews that were forced to leave their homes in Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Morocco, etc. Also, Israel is small (like New Jersey). They do not have the land to raise cattle. So beef is very expensive in Israel.

    Russ and Daughters is not a Deli. It's a appetizer store not a deli.

  • @Eric_G65
    @Eric_G65 3 месяца назад +1

    Excellent video but if you don't mind, a few minor corrections.
    To start Katz's is absolutely not a "Jewish Deli". It's Jewish style. Only genuine Kosher deli's are Jewish Delis and Katz is not Kosher and as far as I know, has never been Kosher. It's also not the best Pastrami, 2nd Ave is better but that's subjective 2nd Ave also happens to be Kosher, so it is a legitimate Jewish Deli. Nothing made at Katz's could be considered Kosher. They do not use Kosher meat and the fact that they offer dairy automatically makes it not Kosher because no Kosher restaurant could sell both meat and dairy. As far as Kosher and Halal, Kosher is much stricter than Halal. Though Muslims could eat Kosher, Kosher keeping Jews could not eat Halal because their standards are completely different than Kosher.
    Russ and Daughter's isn't actually a deli and is also not Kosher because they serve non-Kosher food like Sturgeon. for it to be considered a Jewish deli or a Jewish Style deli, it would have to specialize in some kind of cured meat. Authentic Kosher Deli's generally aren't known for their fish. A real Kosher deli couldn't even sell Lox and bagels with real cream cheese because cream cheese is dairy. Jews normally associate appetizing restaurants with not just fish but dairy items too like cheese. Unlike Katz's, Russ and Daughter was, at one point authentically Kosher and until recently, still had a Kosher location inside of the Jewish museum until it closed a couple of years ago. Russ and Daughters, unfortunately doesn't make their own bagels so they're bagels are not great.
    Gotlieb's is the only authentic "Jewish Deli" in this video. There are several other's that exist in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx, I don't think there are any in Staten Island. There are several in New Jersey and on Long Island too. In the Tri-State area, there are about 20 authentically Kosher Deli's and even More Kosher appetizing stores. Again, only the Kosher delis can properly be called "Jewish Delis" the rest are "Jewish Style". The word Glatt is pronounced Glot. Most Kosher keeping Jewish follow the same rules as Hasidim. Glatt is more of a marketing thing. My father, who was born and raised in NY, and kept Kosher his entire life, as have I, never heard of Glatt until about the 1970's. We are Conservative Jews and we follow the same Kosher rules as Hasidim who are Orthodox.

    • @forgottenworld
      @forgottenworld  3 месяца назад

      Yes, thankl you for the feedback. I was careful with that. Katz's is a "Jewish Style" place. I know kosher is VERY SPECIFIC/strict and I did not go int that in depth, and I didn't know sturgeon was not part of that list. I really wanted to consult with some sort of expert (perhaps a rabbi) on the Kosher conversation.

      @@forgottenworldoh yeah, if you ever want to get that great home made type of gefilte fish to have at home, go to any Kosher supermarket and actually, many regular supermarkets and buy Ungers. It's in the frozen food section. It's sold in a preformed log. It's relatively inexpensive and it's super simple to make. You just boil it for an hour with an onion. As far as horseradish, you want to get Gold's horseradish. It's sold in rvery supermarket. The red is beet and the white is regular. Just be careful because they also sell a special hot version, which is very hot.

Basically it prepares my body for the day, full of vitamins and minerals…that type of breakfast would kill me…😂😂😂 and I would fast for 24 hours to put that big sandwich in my body… I stay away from fries, too much grease and high carbs… or this would be an exceptional lunch once a year…

      No, I am most definitely not trying to impersonate Bourdain‘s voice. It’s just a strange irony that I also happen to be tall like him. He is and has been a huge influence on how I think about documentary film. But the one thing I am definitely not trying to do is be anything like him in that way, as he is phenomenally talented storyteller and I only wish that I could be so elegant as he. So the only thing I can do is try to be my own self and not an imitation. Imitations always fail. If for yourself, at least you can endure.

    Lol at "Gravlax" being smoked. It's not even close to original Scandinavian "Gravad Lax" where the word comes from. "Gravlax" should be raw paper thin slices you put in a plastic bag with lots of salt and dill in the fridge for 24h, then you put them on white hard bread and sprinkle "Hovmästarsås" (special sauce with mustard and dill).
    I would never trust a "Deli" that freely use words they have no understanding what it means, kinda the opposite of what you expect from professionals.
    Stop calling it "Gravlax" when it's just smoked salmon....
