I have oneplus5T but I like LG I have old LG I'm using it for about 8 years without any fault .
Sorry Mat but for a portrait mode pixel completely messed up between hair and neck , looks a lot more artificial, while g7 looks more natural and didn't completely missed the spot.

If your main interests are in the camera than go with the Pixel 2, but! The phone lacks in many areas..No headphone jack, limited storage, no fast or wireless charging!...Auful screen!.. Outrageous price!...

jerry caughron I mean, it does have a really fast quick charge, just a different one then the standard qualcomm "Quick Charge" brand. Definitely hear you on the rest of it, though the screen and storage isn't too bad for me.
I ended up going with the g7, partially because of a great deal on it. Planning to side load the Google camera and see how that works!
Chop you realize the g7 is bigger than the pixel 2 xl right ? The g7 is 6.2 inches I believe
gcforreal G7 is way smaller to handle than the 2XL. Just sold my Pixel after running that and a G7 for a week or so.

The colours are more pleasing on the G7 but Pixel 2 does a better job with the skin tones. I am more towards the cooler tone.
The biggest issue with LG's camera isn't the lens, isn't the sensor - it's their image processing. It's been that way for YEARS. It was my biggest gripe with the otherwise excellent camera on the G4 (my last LG until the G7). Whatever LG does to their images ... every single bleemin' one of them looks like an oil painting when you zoom in to look at details. Every. Single. One. The only way around it seems to be shooting RAW in manual mode and pulling the image into Lightroom ... but that's annoying AF for every little snapshot. I've had so many pics that looked great in the gallery, but pull them up on a larger screen ... and it's like a Van Gogh, except not worth millions of dollars. Hopefully they'll bring stabilization to the 4k video in an update though ... the hardware supports it.

Your review on the photos are the best. Other reviewers did not mention or emphasise well the cooler vs warmer images. And even when g7 did better they just did not comment...

I feel like you did miss out on some commenting about the night-time photos, where the sky was seriously noisy on the Pixel's photos compared to the G7.
Most photos were definitely a good comparison, although I do feel like in some cases some overexposure, like in the portrait version, was due to how the photo was taken, rather than the G7 overexposing it.

I always liked the v30 camera and I like the one on the G7 as well. For me, personally, I often find them pleasing. On top of that the wide angle lens is great! The Pixel is still the best when it comes to faces though.

Dear Matthew! There is optical image stabilization on the G7 during 4k recording. The problem is that it only has OIS and does not use EIS to help out. If there is no stabilization then the camera would have dozens of micro-shakes...It is wobbly so it only uses the mechanism in the senzor unit. The EIS would come in handy but I think they do not have enough pixels on the sensor to crop in and adjust the moving cropped image on the sensor meanwhile maintaining the details and a nice field of view.

When the G7 revealed I was disappointed and I didn't like it at all . but watching all these reviews and comparisons make me change my mind!! Great display great camera and great speaker ,which I didn't expect. Also very good job at optimization and speed since it is comparable and some times better than S9 or even 1+6 and at benchmarks too ! Well done !

Thank you! In the end most pictures taken are with people in them. You had both you and your daughter (super cute!) in it, but I'd like to see the main focus of comparisons to be on people in the pictures. I think that's the most important. And most common irl.
I like the way pictures are compared here and we get the details of the settings for each photo (HDF, Iso, Aperture), too many Videos on youtube claim to make camera comaprisons but are not upfront about the settings of the phone ...

If you going to turn on the hdr plus with the pixel to say how much better the shot looks. You might want to shoot the lg g7 in manual mode to make things fair.

The LG G7 is surprisingly good and often times looked better than the Pixel 2xl. I can't call a winner because they are both running in different categories and it come down to personal preference or what type of pictures or videos you use most.

Prefer the G7 for daytime shots and the Pixel 2 for low light. But overall G7 since the wide angle lens has practical benefits.

You did a pretty decent job going through all the variables you touched on. I am not sure but the LG seemed to keep pretty close, and sometimes exceed expectations, with the Google Pixel 2.I have had my eye on a Sony XZ2 Pro, yet to be released (the only downside I can see is the lack of a headphone jack). When it is released I would love to see a comparison with what you consider to be the best overall phone. Is that the Pixel 2? Whichever phone, I feel you did a great job comparing.Thank you for considering my request.
Dr. donna Walter he did his top 5 phone vid already. I recall s9 for screen. Iphone for certain functions not on android. Pixel 2 for cam and stock android. Can't remember the other 2 but sony xz2 was an honourable mention. So he has top 6 phones. Go check the vid from last week.

Good job on the comparison. But cameras are so close now it shouldn’t matter to most as any flagship can produce a great image. It’s only when it’s side by side it becomes apparent.

I figured out an error in your video, Matthew.
At 5:07 you are saying, that the Pixel 2 needs to use a lot more ISO to compensate for the lack of light rather than the G7.
But if you look at the ISO data, the G7 took the picture at ISO 750 and the Pixel 2 at ISO 376.
So the G7 used a higher ISO, or am I missing something?

Hi, if you're talking about the other having better detail than other, could please do a 100% crop for all shots for us to see it?
Sometimes the app itself can make a big difference, i usually install the same camera app and shoot with it, controlling the settings.
Sometimes a photo can look worse because it's slightly over exposed, but if you turn the iso down manually, the shot will be better exposed, have less noise, and look sharper.
Please make a vedio on the camera comparision of poco f1 and lg g7 thinQ.
How about G7 having an extra wide angle camera? Is that an advantage. Can't say the same "Pixel does all the job with a single camera" for wide-angle shots.

Pretty close call....I'd give he edge to the pixel but the g7 is not very far behind at all. Worth noting the g7 has a great wide angle feature.

Matthew Moniz Making the switch from an IPhone want to make sure I have the right fit; been with iPhone since the 3GS. I was leaning P20 Pro then G7 became a contender that’s carried by a Canadian carrier. Ram and battery have me still leaning to the P20 Pro but I’ve always had a soft spot for LG phones for some reason.
P20 pro beats all phones at night shot and has long battery. For me it only leads on these 2 main points. Daytime it's a decent cam but not so good at pics of people especially skin. Also might oversharpen too much and saturate too much at times. Selfie is below standard for flagships.
You mention ram. It really isn't a factor. Not much diff between 4 and 6 gig. Maybe if you do heaps of video editing and many programs multitasking. So really only affects 1% of users.
845 is faster than huawei chip anyway.
Read my single comment post above too find the points where i think lg is good. If carrier support is added it's partially a no brainer. But... if most of your cam shots are at night and you are a heavy user all day and don't want to carry a portable battery then you want p20
Optical image stabilization at 4k is what tips the scale for me. I would have to go with the Pixel 2, but by a slim margin.
I came to this video expecting the pixel 2 to be a clear winner based on you saying the g7 was "meh". I was pleasantly surprised to find the g7 to be close to the pixel and sometimes better.
So g7 has a competitive and decent main shooter. A decent front shooter based on comparison video.
Plus: wide angle shooter that noone has, quad dac that noone has, and phone jack that only a few have, decent speaker, good screen, decent battery, wireless charge...and personally my favourite parts: a medium width to handle well, a light weight, a non curved screen making for thicker sides/surface area for better grip and no risk of weak palm rejection and the best haptic motor. Thanks for your reviews. Btw this only took me 5 mins to write on my goddamn pointy sides s7edge. Great screen though

You have to do a comparison between the latest flagships:G7 1+6 and U12. Afterwards a complete one with these and S9 plus P20 Pro iPhone pixel
Just watched it and as a user of both Pixel 2 and G7 ThinQ I agree that it's difficult to choose an obvious winner: LG did a better job with wider and better aperture and the video quality is amazing when on 1080 and OIS is on... Pixel 2 strikes with amazing photo and quality consistency... One point that LG wins is the manual mode and one strong point of Pixel is HDR. So I can't really decide which is better but I tend to use LG for better battery and Pixel for better one-handed operation.

I'll take the G7. I'm not sure about this phone but I had a Pixel camera apk on my V20 that made the LG camera way better. I also loved the wide angle lens which pixel lacks. G7 all the way.
I think there is very little to no difference with flagship phones when it comes to daylight pictures. What really stands out and the best comparison is night time pictures

I am got both Pixel 2 and last years Lg G6. What will happen if you install a GCAM ported app on Lg G6 or G7 and then do a comparison? I got both phones in hand right now and have taken a few shots side by side and I am surprised why should someone spend double to money for a PIXEL 2 phone when 90-95% of the image processing can be achieved via GCAM app. I am throwing a video comparison tonight on my channel!
The g7 does have optical stabilization all the time, what you don't get when recording at 4k is electronic stabilization.
Please do a comparison between XZ2 and Pixel 2XL
Should really test which mid-range phone take the best picture, video and audio. Later compare it with the Oneplus 6. The models should be Moto Z2 Play, Nokia 7 Plus, HTC U11 Life and Samsung A8 2018 model.
What's the point to make an hdr off photo on pixel? Its turned on by default and you have to manually turn it off through settings
I was rooting for the G7 because it has headphone jack but with HDR, the Pixel just does a better job dealing with complex lighting. Less washout in the sky and better at bright light at night like the Starbucks sign.
