  • "Fear and Loathing on the Road to Hollywood" (1978) also known as "Fear and Loathing in Gonzovision" is a short documentary produced by BBC Omnibus (basically, arty British tv series). It pictures Hunter S. Thompson in the late 70's, when he was eventually getting bigger than life. It was directed by Nigel Finch.
This smoothly directed road trip movie pairs Thompson with his inseparable fellow, famous illustrator, Ralph Steadman. The party travels to Hollywood via Death Valley and Barstow from Las Vegas being closely pictured by BBC crew and certainly interviewed at the spot.
This is a rarity and must-see for die-hard fans!
    Long live the GONZO!
Hunter S. Thompson for a pope! Stomp on the Jesus, mon!
Where the fuck are you when people need you the most?

What would Hunter make of the modern gun violence epidemic- merely the natural extension
of the crazy American dream gone off the rails? Observe right wing vice: they smoke
copious amounts of weed that fuels their crazy terrorism of the weaker- the non-white
the politically non-correct- some becoming Pot moguls following decriminalization.
Trump supports should smoke it more- anything would improve their fascism. As
Thompson was fond of demonstrating: when the going gets weird, the weird turn Pro...

He was NEVER a Hells Angel, he was a hang around. That's not a put down to Hunter he would confirm this.... but obviously can't. He rode a 650 BSA and had permission to record and write about them. He didn't leave on good terms but did take away quite a few bruises. And of course wrote the the book, "Hells Angels" How do some journalists get things so fukin wrong. RIP Hunter you helped me laugh my way through my teenage years.

He was NEVER a Hells Angel, and the childish crap Steadman is spouting on the plane is laughable, trying to terrify the 'squares' with his tales of this wildman that may just maim or kill them. Hunter worked very hard on his image and although he did indeed do some crazy things while out of his mind on drugs it is unfortunate that he became a charicature of himself. Towards the end of his life he realised he had become a bit of a joke, Hunter wanted to be like F. Scott Fitzgerald and write a great American novel and instead he ended up like P.T. Barnum with himself as the freakshow. It depressed him make no mistake but it sold and he settled for that.

@13thfloor18 I read the novel in 1975. The movie kept most scenes intact, and Mr. Depp was astonishing, but the pacing was all wrong. Many words are ITALICIZED in the book, which gives it a speed/booze feel in addition to a psychedelic one. In the movie, everyone seems like they are on tranquilizers. This is the fault of the director, Terry Gilliam, whose films are invariably glacially paced. And how they could leave out the song "Sympathy for the Devil" is beyond comprehension.

They just wanted to portray him a certain way - as this crazy guy but his writing, his polemicist in his political tracts and his reporting are unique and he shouldn’t be treated as a freak, which is what everyone used to try to do - they shoulda taken him seriously you know they look for the salient outrageous law bending stuff and then project that onto the backs of our eyes -utter bollocks and Steadman should know better. The introductory appraisal is again littered with tabloidy non-sequiturs and neon drivel. Bums on seats glue
