- "Fear and Loathing on the Road to Hollywood" (1978) also known as "Fear and Loathing in Gonzovision" is a short documentary produced by BBC Omnibus (basically, arty British tv series). It pictures Hunter S. Thompson in the late 70's, when he was eventually getting bigger than life. It was directed by Nigel Finch.
This smoothly directed road trip movie pairs Thompson with his inseparable fellow, famous illustrator, Ralph Steadman. The party travels to Hollywood via Death Valley and Barstow from Las Vegas being closely pictured by BBC crew and certainly interviewed at the spot.
This is a rarity and must-see for die-hard fans!
Long live the GONZO!
Hunter S. Thompson for a pope! Stomp on the Jesus, mon!
Where the fuck are you when people need you the most?
"I am living a normal life, wife, child, peacocks..."
only hunter would mention 'peacocks' while trying to explain how normal his life was
Thinking ab this..I can reallly picture Björk, and the filmmaker Werner Herzog saying exactly this, tbh.
I think hunter Life was 100 times Better than every fucking single billionaire tooday... thats world Will never come back, oso people like him was too much rare
How is it NOT normal?? Peacocks for pets, here in Western Oregon are just like dogs or cats…at least here up Wolf Creek.
@@BushyHairedStranger nice, def not common knowledge - but that is something I am v jealous of
I cracked up when he said, "the secret service thought i was an astronaut".
One thing about it this man lived life to the fullest like there was no tomorrow he's probably done and seen more than half the human race could do in 2 or 3 lifetimes ...R.I.P.Hunter
As have I.
What would Hunter make of the modern gun violence epidemic- merely the natural extension
of the crazy American dream gone off the rails? Observe right wing vice: they smoke
copious amounts of weed that fuels their crazy terrorism of the weaker- the non-white
the politically non-correct- some becoming Pot moguls following decriminalization.
Trump supports should smoke it more- anything would improve their fascism. As
Thompson was fond of demonstrating: when the going gets weird, the weird turn Pro...
I....*guess*...?
Hunter was a great dude. Plain and simple. Won’t be another. He was a slithery intellect and made his way about. I do admire him but at the same time despise because he reminds me of myself. But he was something else.
God bless him though... One of America's literary treasures...
Fear and loathing is definitely alive today
You are based and such a free thinker
It always has been Monkey Man. What made 4 years ago so special?
His loss speech at 4:00 has got to be the most sober anyone had ever seen him 😂
He was NEVER a Hells Angel, he was a hang around. That's not a put down to Hunter he would confirm this.... but obviously can't. He rode a 650 BSA and had permission to record and write about them. He didn't leave on good terms but did take away quite a few bruises. And of course wrote the the book, "Hells Angels" How do some journalists get things so fukin wrong. RIP Hunter you helped me laugh my way through my teenage years.
At last, a version with sound! Thanks so much for this.
Haha smoking on planes back in the day. I remember flying to Australia as a child and would go to the back of the plane with my old man while he had a smoke. Good ol days
Hurts to see. All these little freedoms have evaporated. Smoke in hospitals. Planes. Schools. Shit, I remember all the teachers in their breakroom laughing and hooting it up, smoking cigars and butts during lunchtime. Goddamn shame liberties like that are gone.
back in the 70's when you could openly smoke joints on a commercial airline...
1954telecaster oh man I wish lol
90 secs in and i'm furious!! nickel beer and you can smoke on the plane?? that's maybe the coolest thing i've ever heard of, ever
this is like one of those wild animal shows on discovery,
Nice profile pic! I love Constantine.
cool man!
nickel beer and lemonade.

That artwork is timeless
Poor Edward
Such a fascinating and beautiful human being!
He’s was an insane cruel narcissistic maniac. And a genius writer. He was never beautiful ! More the embodiment of pain and horror.
Apparently the fact-checker was on vacation.
6:20
At one point I saw myself as the bird
*hunter aggressively yanks the bird out of the cage*
Me: jesus christ
'That'll kill a bear at 200 yards'
RIP 💀
Oh to have him in his prime now. I love to think He would blow the top off of a lot of shady going onings nowadays.
We need Johnny Depp to do the audio books for his work
watching him torment that bird makes my blood curdle
IHTECIGARETTES1 yeah same
I know, it's such a stupid, pointless thing to do!
I loved it
Talk to me Edward
sorry to say but he was never a Hells Angel, he wrote a book about Hells Angels. Big different!
yea but they let him ride with them and almost killed him
He was and wasn't one. Just put it that way.
Just like different and difference.
Doc Bummings he never had HA patches but he did live with them.he just got kicked out because he fought someone who was beating their girlfriend and they had lol jumped in and beat him back in the 60’s but aside from that he wasn’t really a member or trafficker,he just bought lots of coke and used it with them whenever he came up
Jesus price he lived with em but he was pretty much in a “roommate” situation with them
An interesting mind - genius with a little bit of a bolt loose. Also I think the drugs took their toll after awhile. Hard for anyone to see that when they are stuck in the middle of it.
god i love him
If anything is worth doing,.....it's worth doing right.
Damn straight
Like his humour with imaginative jonction to the point . Not a final point but a mean point to something more ... just there .......
The film crew have to approach him with caution, as if they are in the wilderness trying to document a rare and dangerous animal.
No, he is actually benevolent towards people, he loves the chaos outside rigid order that makes life boring and routine..
He invented electricity don't ya know
The American Dream really is fucked.
Smoking on the plane and nickel beers
a VALIANT ATTEMPT lol brilliant
If I could only go back......
He was from Louisville, Kentucky not Aspen
“This is our good old summertime flight”
Johnny depp really got it spot on
He spent quite a bit time with him actually staying at his house to prepare for the part in the movie. There's a video or 2 about it on here.
Former Hell's Angel? He hung with them for a year or so to do a story, but he was no Hell's Angel.
I'll bet that plane is still in circulation today haha
He eventually got beat down...Hunter told one of them.."You're a punk for beating a woman", one of the Angels replied "You want some?" - then they started hitting him...he began to end his relationship with H.A. at that point. Sonny Bargar still called him; One of America's greatest writers ever.
SuperOmnicron he actually said "only a punk beats a woman and a dog" to which he got a beatdown from a few HA's and took a trip to hospital
Ironically, he would beat his wife many times years later.
POOR EDWARD!!! HAHAHAH
I want that red and blue circle button shirt. Anyone know where I can aquire one... Thanks
classic
He was NEVER a Hells Angel, and the childish crap Steadman is spouting on the plane is laughable, trying to terrify the 'squares' with his tales of this wildman that may just maim or kill them. Hunter worked very hard on his image and although he did indeed do some crazy things while out of his mind on drugs it is unfortunate that he became a charicature of himself. Towards the end of his life he realised he had become a bit of a joke, Hunter wanted to be like F. Scott Fitzgerald and write a great American novel and instead he ended up like P.T. Barnum with himself as the freakshow. It depressed him make no mistake but it sold and he settled for that.
He did write the great American novel though
Johnny Depp was here! #johnnydepp
Why does the guy say "ah!" Everytime someone pulls the trigger of the gun?
HST was never a Hell's Angel. He hung out with them for a while in order to write a book about them, until they beat the shite out of him.
Nickel beer... Damn
nickel beer and lemonade
@13thfloor18 I read the novel in 1975. The movie kept most scenes intact, and Mr. Depp was astonishing, but the pacing was all wrong. Many words are ITALICIZED in the book, which gives it a speed/booze feel in addition to a psychedelic one. In the movie, everyone seems like they are on tranquilizers. This is the fault of the director, Terry Gilliam, whose films are invariably glacially paced. And how they could leave out the song "Sympathy for the Devil" is beyond comprehension.
When I headed he shot himself I wasn't shocked. The time Conan went to his farm was hilarious. Target practice was funny
does anyone know who made the illustrations ??
I think you're referring to Ralph Steadman.
+Courtney Valdez lol like how did they even ask that?? Lmao im seriously laughing my ass off at that
Hunter Thompson deserved his fame making his job too hard to do.
@Scrotetasticular Steadman is Scottish, right?
He Used to make snuff films
who drew the images in his books
valkor73 the guy who says in some ways I became the bird
The guy in the beginning of the video with grey shaggy hair.
Ralph steadman
Need to find that Audiobook of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the primary one on RUclips and Audible have an awful reader who thinks everyone has a southern accent. NOTE: People from Nevada don't have any twang or distinctive accents... its 4 hours from Los Angeles
"speak up edward speak up!!!" aww man hes a riot:) wish i could go up to a cop like that, this man blows me away every day. humter is such a sweetheart, it breaks my heart that people were scared of him..such an amazing man
Fuck those who were scared of him! I love him too!! And Edward I do that to my cat too Cletus! I'm coming for you Cletus :) I think of Hunter like like one of the lines out of Fear and Loathing Las Vegas There goes one of gods own prototypes Not even considered for mass production Too weird to live; too rare to die
Whats the score here ?
11:10 That will kill a bear at 200 yards
Is it true that Thompson was a customer of Franklin Community Federal Credit Union?
pause in the ! it means ... ask your self what is the golden middle :P
hey it said alot that he stood up for a woman being beaten , knowing he would get beat into the ground
“Fear and loathing’ appears in nearly all his titles” you mean two of them? God dammit.
HST was never a Hell's Angel or former one.
gonzo - give me a surreal naturalism of a subject in which i thought i understood, i shall approach that subject in an entirely different manner.
i shall look that said subject and view a perverted and distorted world, but in said world i shall realize many wonderful truths.said truths may not be profound or magnificent, but they shall be eye opening.
they will make me view subjects in an entirely different manner. does this different manner make sense? perhaps....
but it shall open the senses
He was never a hells angel ffs
Treating the bird like that isn’t cool.
only an arse hole would do that to a little Bird.
Hunter wasn’t some PC woke type.
When Smoking on Planes was ok
He made snuff films for the elite
Citation needed.
He also cannibalized people and raped a dwarf....cuz i said so.
He was also the king of the moon and lived for 3000 years before coming to earth
crock of shite buddy
I have no legs I have no legs that was a rumor from the 1960’s and it was used against hunter when he made books about the government,so the government tried to make him look bad by saying he did “satanic rituals” and such but it was all a lie, take it with a grain of salt because I don’t have the “agents” “locations” and “units” on the top of my head but I know it wasn’t true ,plus he would’ve surely been investigated which if he was I doubt it would just go unnoticed in the media
1:38 There is qwhite a difference you see
hmmm ya whut ? brain and not understanding what you understand is a final frontier :)
And carter brought the worst economic policy in 50 years...
He wasn't a hell's Angel he just spent time with them to research his book "Hell's angels"and he ran for Mayor of Aspen not sheriff.
How pathetic of my for having such an educational gap - I din't know that Thompson was really that close to Depp's character in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas >.
Don't you know there's a picture of a young HUNTER wearing the famous jacket. Educational You would be able to see the dopleganger in Johnny depp.. Ohh my bad you would know because your so open minded to what you have been educated... With...
More sensationalist codswallop! They just wanted to portray him a certain way - as this crazy guy but his writing, his polemicist in his political tracts and his reporting are unique and he shouldn’t be treated as a freak, which is what everyone used to try to do - they shoulda taken him seriously you know they look for the salient outrageous law bending stuff and then project that onto the backs of our eyes -utter bollocks and Steadman should know better. The introductory appraisal is again littered with tabloidy non-sequiturs and neon drivel. Bums on seats glue
It could of been a way better documentary had it not been this drawings, and this narrator... I just cant stand it... and dont know why...
Nothing special
