  • The negative step is one of the easiest move any player can use at the perimeter to score.
We see this move used frequently at all levels from high school, college, to the pros. And when executed correctly this move is dangerous even when its done by slow players and unstoppable when done by quick and athletic players. What is great about this move is that it is efficient and can get you a shot or layup with 1-3 dribbles.
And like any other move in basketball there are specific situations that makes this move more effective.
in this video i will provide a full breakdown and analysis of the negative step to give you all an idea of how to execute it, what situations is it best in, and ways you could score using this move.

I think it is effective only when used as a shooting fake, a pump fake and more effective when defender has weight on his front foot. Without this situations it is less effective than a positive step. In any case you can be able to be effective with a negative step and with a bad positive step the same way. In general, if an offensive player can make a fake that get the defender attention...it is a win for the offense.
