    I just got done reading it and I gotta see I’m on the other side with the Yorick and 355 . I wanted them together so bad. 355 is to this day one of my favorite characters I’ve ever read. I think the tale of yorick looking for his true love and maybe actually finding it- just not who he thought. Great review though and I can totally see your points. For me it’s a 4.5 out of 5. But if You want 100%- Watch the sopranos. Greatest piece of media entertainment EVER.

    • @MaddoggComics
      @MaddoggComics  3 года назад +1

      But I don't want to find 100% haha, and I wasn't a fan of the ending of the Sopranos, but it's been years since I watched the series :) I know I'm in the minority with 355 x Yorrick, but that's why I had to make a point in the video, and who knows it may leave room for the TV show to change my mind :) Thanks for watching the video, David! Hope you enjoy the show if you watch it! :) WOOF WOOF!

    My issue with this book is how uneven it is. There are lovable characters, great dialogue and genuinely clever storytelling diversions. Yet, for all of that, there are glaring weaknesses. The characters often don't make sense. Example: Dr. Mann is introduced as a biologist/geneticist, but they also treat her like a medical doctor for no apparent reason. As if the prefix "Dr." means you're automatically a medical doctor? It makes no sense. We later find out she is somehow a board certified physician while also being an Ivy League Geneticist in her 20! This is never explained.
    There are moments of genuinely cringe dialogue. There's a scene where a woman says to another woman, after an intimate encounter, that "anyone who finds her G-spot on the first try can call me by my first name" or something to that effect. Anyone even remotely familiar with female anatomy is very embarrassed for Vaughan (and maybe his wife, lol jk) when they read that. Silly nonsense like this sneaks into the book all over the place. There's also the storyline where Dr. Mann thinks her genetic experiments caused the disaster. This is... terrible. No scientist would ever make such a stupid assumption. Bad, bad, bad.
    As for the actual story, there are numerous storylines that don't go anywhere. The "big bad" is a nonsense character and the ending of her storyline is awful. Like, genuinely embarrassingly bad. The conclusion and explanation for the pandemic that killed all of the men is extremely unsatisfying. There's a lot wrong with it.
    All of that said, I cried like a little bitch at the end of the this book, and genuinely "missed my friends" when I stopped reading. And that is the hallmark of an effectively told story. Y: The Last Man is highly flawed, but at the end of the day I do love this story. I wouldn't put it on any short list of greatest comics, but it certainly occupies a space in my heart.

    I didn’t love this one like most but I did enjoy the read and overall journey and concept but my big problem was I never cared for the characters so the stakes and gut punch moments didn’t land and those two play issue were pointless. The ending was also interesting my take with the last panel is just simply that Yorick is finally free from all this drama
    Great review and I’m interested in how they handle the show especially in this day and age

    I liked the review. We have both approached it differently and that's absolutely fine, as every reader's perspective is unique. In my eyes, the series' focus was the world itself, showing how women are as equally capable as the men of the world. Yorrick's journey was one of the main threads of narration.
    Some of the feminist ideas used here are well crafted and I think a lot of credit should also go to Pia. While her art is simple at the beginning, I felt it was more and more nuanced by the end of every 10th issue. The natural women character designs are body positive and reflective of the real world. I also liked how the environment plays a role in an individual's ideology, irrespective of their race or gender. I haven't seen many talk about the colours, but they are the standout aspect of this series in my opinion. Absolutely phenomenal and one of the reasons why I'm tempted to upgrade to the Absolutes.
    Of Yorrick, I loved how BKV produces pop culture quips at unexpected times. I thought the way he was made to deal with the world around him and the unconventional treatment he received was great. I also felt his bonding and journey with Agent 355 was quite natural and I wouldn't change any of that.
    It's not without its faults and I agree with most of the gaps/frustrations you have identified, especially around antagonists and their motivations. They weren't fully fleshed out, but I was fine with it as I felt the focus was more on the world than an individual character. I could go on and on, but the positives outweighed the negatives for me as well. It's one of the best stories I have read recently and I will definitely revisit it in the future. I will definitely be recommending this series to my circle of friends at every given opportunity.

    • @MaddoggComics
      @MaddoggComics  3 года назад +2

      Yeah, like there is an improvement with the art, but I just think it's one of those styles that doesn't get a wow from me, but that's the joy of art :P
      I liked how Yorick's references didn't feel outdated like I thought they might :P You'll have to let me know if you upgrade to the Absolutes mate! Thanks for watching mate, WOOF WOOF!

    Ive been looking forward to this review with all the hype you have given Maddogg. I'll confess right here I read the description of the series and wasn't 100% sold. It reminded me of I am legend which is a film I enjoy watching but I guess i wanted something different/more for it to stand out from the crowd.
