Like always I enjoyed your video, but there's one thing I'd like to point out. I know that you researched the online sources while researching for making this video so I don't blame you. But, the data that 117 billion people have ever existed goes against all common sense. Without doubt, it is a made up figure made by governments to fool us. The numerous old world buildings built with such finesse situate all around the world (at times even at most unreachable spots of the earth); the pyramids; the immensely large castles; the temples, mosques, churches built and destroyed time and time again; numerous number of battles and wars and genocides, the hundreds and hundreds of miles of underground tunnel systems which have found but we have never even explored and everything else proves otherwise. Without doubt there have been trillions of people who were born and who died before us and any specific numbers we are provided currently is a lie. All the population related data told to us is fabrication and a lie to manipulate property prices and to keep us enslaved. Have you ever noticed how all the old world buildings are so huge and almost all of them are totally empty, while a 1000 sq.feet apartment costs a person so much money?
I mean, as long as you are doing the best you can and you give the same grace to others, particularly children (especially children), that's cool with me.
For those who think, read, study, analyze, plan ahead, life is earned. The vast majority do none of these things, relying on others by doing what they are told, as a child might. Political immaturity is their "death style". The are oblivious, superstitious, blaming others for their ignorance, their stupidity. They die the way they were born, unenlightened but become indoctrinated with "The Most Dangerous Superstition" (Larken Rose). Undoing the deadly faith in force is up to the few intellectuals who see how all could "live long & prosper", if a political philosophy based on reason, mutual respect, could be taught to the cognitively impaired. It's only logical.
Realizing that no one really knows how to "adult" has taken such a weight off my shoulders. I used to be freaked out because I was in my late 20s and still didn't "feel like an adult", but the reality is that everyone is just winging it and pretending, there's no guide book for this and you're not just going to suddenly feel and think in a different way than when you were 16 or 17. I think so many of us get trapped in our own minds and start to lose sight of the bigger picture of our existence, and just how special it is.
It is not I don't feel any different now at 26 than I did at like 19 and yet I do so much more than I did at 19. I handle all that just fine but it doesn't *feel* any different. @@dtm2741

Be the father his kids needs. Honor your friend by being a father figure to his kids. Im not saying replace him. Thats not right. But the kids still need a man to guide them. What better way to show love for your friend, by caring for his children.
I'm 44, going to be 45 next month, and I barely know what to do with myself now. I still feel like I should be right out of college, experiencing things for the first time, charged with energy to go after them. But my body tells me otherwise every time I struggle to get out of bed or stand up from a chair. My mind still is 20, but my body isn't.
I'm the same age, brother. Try to fight it. I lift regularly and try to chop wood, walk dogs, and play with my kids. A friend who recently beat cancer told me, "the less you do, the less you CAN do." Darn right. It sucks to get old, no doubt, but i hold on as much as i can. I can still dunk a basketball and jump the wake on a wakeboard (barely!). Just keep finding a new thing that you can improve at and do it till you can't, then try something else. Stay active, stay young, stay happy.
I'm only 23 and my body is already giving out on me. If you look at me I look very athletic, or at least more so than the average guy. I try to eat okay and think about my health constantly. Yet my body is giving out. My left knee and sometime right hurts a lot. My back always hurts especially in the morning. I work out a lot yet I'm so weak compared to many guys around me who don't work out at all. I randomly had a seizure and it seems like I'll never know why. Plus a few other things. It all came suddenly the last 2 years. I really wanted to live to be 100 just to say I did it. Now I can't imagine living till 35. I genuinely feel like I'm in my twilight years because my body hates me so much. Even if I lived till 100 I would be in so much physical pain and couldn't move I would want it to be over.

I am over 50, and while I can complain about entrophy, I feel so priviledged to have "survived" this long. We should appreciate more about what we have, and of just existing.
I don’t appreciate existence. Why is there even something instead of nothing? I’m not knocking the positives of life and the happy times we can have, but if people and kids especially, have to go through torment and hell on earth, then I’m all for shutting this program down.
@@calebwood1663 why does anything exist at all, especially when existence often includes suffering? It’s understandable to feel disillusioned, particularly when innocent people, like children, suffer. Philosophers like Schopenhauer saw life as filled with suffering, leading some to question whether existence is even worth it. Others, like Viktor Frankl, argue that even in suffering, we can find meaning and purpose. "shutting the program down" aligns with a nihilistic view that non-existence might be preferable to a world with so much pain. Some believe that alongside suffering, life offers moments of joy and beauty that make it worth enduring. Ultimately, whether life’s positives outweigh the negatives is a personal judgment. There’s no easy answer, and your perspective is a valid part.
That's another reason why we should also bring forth such problems so as to keep improving because if we are fortunate, we have much greater responsibility
In the words of a popular youtube channel whose name I cannot recall: "The world is much better than it use to be, but it can be much better than it is" Just because we are much better off doesnt mean we live in a perfect world. Perhaps one day in a distant future, people will look back at us the same way we look back at our ancestors. There is way less suffering now, but there still is a lot of it left and we must strive as a society to do everything we can to push towards a future with less suffering
Honestly you knowing this now would be a lot more beneficial than finding out the hard way when you are at that point in your life. The physical stress/pain/hunger has now been replaced with anxiety, depression and debt slavery, we need to enter a third stage where we avoid both, most of our battles are now mental/existential but never the less real to the person experiencing it.

Everyone just switches parental figures as they get older, yet claim being told what to do and where and how by something called a 'boss', is some marker of adulthood and independence. As though what solely separates adults from children is "paying bills" and nothing more. This alone proves that human beings domesticated themselves to the point of a kind of neoteny unseen in any other animal, except for small dogs maybe
I'd say that the difference is being responsible for yourself. You need to care for your own needs, usually no one babysits you to ask what's wrong on your every whim, you might have children you are responsible for. Getting a boss and making others decide for you, perhaps also in a controlling relationship, is a way to try to escape this responsibility. The reason children now are not as mature as they were back then is because they bear no responsibility. Parents get blamed for everything, they often see no consequences for their own actions. While the means back in the day were too brutal, not having to think and act for yourself ultimately makes you stay a child.
Reflection is key. When you're about to cross beyond the void veil, no "parental" nor "boss-like" figure is going to have given you the skills, mindset, and training you actually require. Humanity is ill-prepared to slip into the 4th dimension at a systemic, persistent, global level. And even thousands of years of existence haven't lent them much (if any) wisdom. Totally wonderful meditation on who we are and why we're able to be here. But I had one qualm that might deserve some thought--at 5:43, I don't understand or readily agree that simply because life expectancy was once so appallingly low, and poverty and disease were so common, that we now alive shouldn't be, and we who live in good health, and enjoy literacy and numeracy, should not. I understand this stark verdict is likely intended to be poetic license, but it conjures the demons of both cynicism and puritanism, as though we can't rely on human progress to continue indefinitely, or worse, that we don't deserve lives that consistently improve with the passage of historic time. Personally, I believe we should both hope and expect to enjoy a steady increase in safe, healthy, meaningful lives, lived in compassionate, vibrant societies under competent, democratic governance in a clean and cruelty-free world. But we have at least two reciprocal obligations, which are 1) to be consciously grateful for the burdens and efforts of previous generations to situate us so amenably. And 2) to pay that kindness and sacrifice forward, so we leave our descendants a world with as much promise and bounty but far less tension and suffering. And whether or not we have biological progeny is utterly irrelevant; the moral obligation to care about other lives and communities is a standing one, for all humans, due our attention in all directions: back into history, forward into the future and, to include every heart now beating in this spacetime, outward for 12,000 miles in all directions (the circumference of the Earth is about 24,000 miles). If by some inane, self-serving logic someone disagrees over such obligations, then they should please return every product of plant or animal domestication, every technology that saved or improved your life, every appliance, vehicle and fixture that relies on incline planes, gear-trains, pulleys, screws or levers, hammers, nails or microcircuitry, every bottle of solvent, lubricant, acid, ammonia, complex chemical or synthesized molecule, every xray image, MRI or ultrasound, antibiotic, analgesic or anesthesia, hormone or enzyme, insulin or anti-inflammatory, every fire station, water reservoir, sewage system, protective legislation, flood diversion, diplomatic treaty, nature preserve, geographic map, cultural artifact, every text of human anatomy and physiology, hospital, kindergarten, film and photograph, microbrew or vintage wine, effective vaccine, piece of jewelry, every work of art, masterpiece of literature, venerable university, revered cathedral, neighborhood library, symphonic memory and mathematical equation, every rich, dark latte and perfect lemon tart, baby diaper and reading glasses, historical survey and ancestral record, monumental architecture and belief system now in your possession or archived in your cranial vault perched somewhere safe between the deep blue sea, the baby blue sky and the fertile, brown earth beneath your well-shod feet.

For the past thirty years, one of my favorite conversation starters at dinner parties and other get togethers has been: "How many of us would still be here if we didn't have modern medicine?" Even when I first began asking this question after emergency surgery and IV antibiotics for a ruptured appendix at age 21, it was surprising how many people in their 20s and 30s had also had close brushes with death at some point in their lives. Now, in my mid 50s, among others of a certain age, it is often only my husband and maybe one other person who have survived without medical interventions.
Lol, that's definitely me. I was at one point on the surgical table and given antibiotics two times already in my teens. So, i could've been dead already... what...
In short: with higher death rates and lower life expectancies you have a higher turnover rate. This can still be seen today in developing countries, where there is more population turnover than in the developed world.
If there's even one person in this world who has a clear understanding of how to grow up while growing older, he's done a mighty good job of keeping that information secret.

I don’t like seeing it as entitlement always. I would rather my children never know my struggles in hopes they have a better life. Problem is telling them so that they might learn to avoid it often causes it to reoccur to them.
Life is a school. We do not really reach adulthood because we are not really shown guidance towards self actualization. It has been my experience in American culture that from the beginning we are all taught to look externally for answers. We look to our parents for guidance, teachers for instruction, police for discipline/structure, and the church for some sort of hope or redemption. As long as we are taught this external narrative, it is difficult to understand what it means to mature. Maturation comes from within. One must learn how to sit with their silence and how to speak with ones self in order to properly navigate the many lessons here in this experience. It is when we learn to do that and what that means or looks like, we begin to grow. /opinion
Another important thing to note that people don’t really consider. The average age of death is 73. There’s still a pretty high chance you die before 60 (retirement) and even if you don’t die you can be crippled either physically or by an illness. So chances are you got less time then you think and you probably won’t be in good Heath or alive to enjoy retirement
Here in Germany, defendants aged 18 to 20 might be tried as teenagers or adults, depending on whether or not the court deems them mature enough to be treated as full-fledged adults.
Actually, my brother was tried as an adult at the age of 15 and forced to move out of the house for rehabilitation, and we didn't figure out that extent of punishment had been a mistake until a few years ago when he'd already had two children and lost their mother. i think you messed this up. average life expectancy doesnt mean most people got average years old and some die younger, some die older. it means many die as infants, some die as average years old, and many get old. conswquently, yes. if average life expectancy was 15, most people reached adulthood and died between 20 and 30, but the 30% infant death rate made it 15y average, just to give an example.

The premise of this video isn't correct, this is covered in detail in the book "Civilized to death". A nice piece anyway, but the average life expectancy was never truly 30 or 20 or 35, it's just child mortality that brought this down.
Yeah, but that's the point. The majority of people born would die in their childhood, therefore being an adult is a privilege. That was the whole point of the video.
@@mirta000 sure, and I enjoyed it. I'm just saying that 30 years old has never been "old", that's just a myth based on mean life expectancy being lowered by child mortality, which this video got wrong. But that's ok, it's just a RUclips video! :)
I agree. If you discounted child (under 5) mortality, most people who survived that lived to similar ages as many of us do. There were still not many over 80, but plenty lived to 50, 60, 70.
The lives of humans before what we might call modern society or even ancient society really was hardly different than any other animal. You live in a territory; hunt, forage, or scavenge for food; require protection from your parents or other members of the family or tribe; and die from things beyond your control. It's amazing that stories and strategies were made in order to try to explain the unexplainable and gather resources for our children, to a degree of becoming the most successful invasive species barring whatever creatures we ended up bringing with us in even greater numbers. The entire size advantage of megafauna became obsolete, plants lived and died based on whether or not their colors, smells, and tastes were deemed worthy of cultivating, waterways like rivers and inland seas moved or destroyed, rocks melted into metal and tortured with lightning to force them to think, all to make enough sense of things for the dying to stop.

For those who think, read, study, analyze, plan ahead, life is earned. The vast majority do none of these things, relying on others by doing what they are told, as a child might. They die the way they were born, unenlightened but become indoctrinated with "The Most Dangerous Superstition" (Larken Rose).

This is unfortunate.

Growing up has pros and cons. Most people that don't grow up probably don't want to.
For the past thirty years, one of my favorite conversation starters at dinner parties and other get togethers has been:
"How many of us would still be here if we didn't have modern medicine?"
Even when I first began asking this question after emergency surgery and IV antibiotics for a ruptured appendix at age 21, it was surprising how many people in their 20s and 30s had also had close brushes with death at some point in their lives.
Now, in my mid 50s, among others of a certain age, it is often only my husband and maybe one other person who have survived without medical interventions.
Eh, people still lived at the age of 50-60 with the wealthy living up to 70 or even 90.
Kids died more.
Lol, that's definitely me. I was at one point on the surgical table and given antibiotics two times already in my teens.
So, i could've been dead already...
what...
I'd probably be dead but on the other hand it's modern stuff that put me in that situation.
For me, it would-ve been a tooth infection as a child. Aside from that, I'd be golden.
But death only has to get you once lol
In short: with higher death rates and lower life expectancies you have a higher turnover rate. This can still be seen today in developing countries, where there is more population turnover than in the developed world.
Never under estimate how a nuke war, a plague, or many things could put this back in line with ancient history in a a minute.
We will find even more efficient ways to accomplish that
Actually, I clicked thinking this had something to do with all the rampant, immature behavoirs we see going on today in the world.
If there's even one person in this world who has a clear understanding of how to grow up while growing older, he's done a mighty good job of keeping that information secret.
Wow, good video.
Is it abnormal I think about this weekly?
How my life expiences are shared with so many, but still through technology and society it is so far from what the average human in history experienced.
Even now, most people don't achieve intellectual or spiritual "adulthood" - no matter their physical age.

Life is supposed to exist. The universe never wanted life. We shall forever be unwanted children.

I just checked your channel for the new video and here it is
Their corporate sponsors are so happy that you got the message
/opinion

This is one of my favourite ones. Just provides so much perspective. Thanks for putting this together.
This helped in more ways than I thought it would. Woah
My mom just turned 73 and I have told her these same sentiments! She was in denial and has finally decided she will retire now, thank God!
Or you could live to 90 with little illness like my great aunt.
Adult is subjective unless you're in front of a judge.
And society as a public figure
Here in Germany, defendants aged 18 to 20 might be tried as teenagers or adults, depending on whether or not the court deems them mature enough to be treated as full-fledged adults.
Actually, my brother was tried as an adult at the age of 15 and forced to move out of the house for rehabilitation, and we didn't figure out that extent of punishment had been a mistake until a few years ago when he'd already had two children and lost their mother. Judge can absolutely be subjective, they just shouldn't be.
Most Judges are nothing but children themselves.
Why u always give me existential crisis
It keeps you frightened and scared, so much easy to control that way.

This was more literal than I was expecting. I thought this video would be more metaphorical/mental. As in people's level of maturity and growth.
Thank you for the this excellent and thought provoking video. When anyone remarks “things were better when I was a kid” usually by people in their 70’s like myself, I reply along the lines of “and die at 55”
Beautiful, thank you.
7:35 "Every 30 year old ... casually aware how the sun works" - my dear sir, I am afraid you are vastly overestimating the knowledge level of the average adult, let alone "every adult".
You took it out of contents
Yeah, you are kind of missing the point. The point is that we are now mentally so much different than how most humans have been in the past. If we want to know something now we can take a bit of time to research and understand the topic of interest. While people back then could only speculate on what they themselves see or create religions about such things.
@@leafstarivy Yes, but actually no. I understand (and agree!) with idea of the video: we live in an extraordinary era. But while we have complete access to the sum total of human knowledge, this does NOT prevent A LOT of people from living in a state of willful total ignorance. And if you think superstition is dead, go talk to the average person.
@@yankeevictor9055 I totally agree with you. But what I was trying to tell is that our possibilities to use knowledge in new fields and the possibility to get a grasp on it for the average person is way way higher than back then. You can learn any perspective and get a grasp on any source today if you are open to it and that isn't something that was that easy to do previously. Back then you had to talk with people you know or get in touch with some experts after you found them in a social network to learn different perspectives and try to get understanding in them. Now the only limit of knowledge is yourself or what manipulates you around yourself.
We all grow older every year however not all of us grow up.

Probably not enough data
They probably had children at 13 yrs old
@@1000Ducks
Actually most have kids a little later than that. Having children too young wouldn’t be so good, but you can’t wait until too late. So around 16-18 they might have their first child. Prehistoric humans probably have their first maybe around 15-16. If most mothers did have children too young then would explain why mother mortality was high. Yes that can happen at any age, but very young mothers are most likely to ended from child birth.
Remember, nobody in Shakespeare’s time seems to have questioned Romeo & Juliet marrying at 14 or 15.

This hits hard bro... I had some close calls before age 20, but here I am decades later still living.
i think you messed this up.
average life expectancy doesnt mean most people got average years old and some die younger, some die older.
it means many die as infants, some die as average years old, and many get old.
conswquently, yes. if average life expectancy was 15, most people reached adulthood and died between 20 and 30, but the 30% infant death rate made it 15y average, just to give an example.
In today's life less than half or more than half will not reach the age expectancy.
and also just imagine since most of the people earlier died so young, but our ancestors were the one who didn't die young and that's why we are here. it is indeed an absolute wonder to be alive and aware.
I work at Walmart. I'm a modern slave. I can only afford my home because a family member owns it. 20 years from now I'll be nearly 60 with no hope.

The good news is you have 20 years to make sure you have hope at 60.
If you continue to think and act the way you do, you will end up being proven right. I have hope though that you will have hope far sooner than the age of 60.

This brought a tear to my eye
I had the same feeling 👍
So many of the adults I've met over my lifetime are still 14-year-old children.
so what, there were no old people in the past? No, they had 15 kids and 12 of them died, drastically skewing the "life expectancy" rates
Yes...and even taking that into account the average life expectancy for a human in ancient times was way way less than 73 globally now or the 85+ in some modern societies.
That’s…the f*cking point.

This sows such gratitude and goosebumps, humbling as a word doesn't live up to it.
It’s exactly what he said in the video, i bet you didn’t watch
It's said that the first person to live forever likely has already been born. I hope they're able to appreciate how they were able to get there.
I doubt there is anything positive about living forever. It just makes life even more meaningless.
Death is what gives life meaning.
@@gzoechi If that were true, medicine would no be a thing.
@@hedgehogthesonic3181 It's mostly about reducing suffering and not dying too young. That life is short is the only reason life has some "meaning". Many are struggling to get enough meaning out of that already.
@@gzoechi Medicine has increased lifespan, and if humans want to get into space exploration, our lifespan will need to be increased. And that is happening, no matter what. Death does not makes life better, no one wants to die.
@@hedgehogthesonic3181 That you don't believe it, doesn't make it less true. Medicine might be able to prolong it further but that won't make anyone happier.
Space travel would still be possible. We could freeze eggs and sperm and have robots breed them at the destination. I doubt humans will ever leave our solar system if we don't invent faster than light travel first.

Theres often a myth that people in those olden times were callous or indifferent to all this suffering. But its not so.
