Kermode just painted himself into a corner with the Pirates movies. With each successive release, he found he had to do a "rant", his public demanded it and, really, they're no worse than any other action franchise like Indiana Jones or whatever. They're nothing to get het up about. Some of the stuff he raved about made me far angrier than the Pirates movies - Moonlight, Phantom Thread, Get Out, The Favourite....I'm with him on The Exorcist though.
@@henrygerard2315 I THOUGHT that I heard something that sounded like an academic defense of The Exorcist III as an under-rated film, but I just thought is was mice!
The first Pirates film was wonderful. Every single one after that was garbage. Mostly because they tried to make Depp the protagonist. As opposed to a supporting character.
I disagree, for all the narrative flaws in Dead Man's Chest and At World's End, I loved the ambitious, epic narrative of these films. They were always sweeping and fun and had this really memorable production. Hans Zimmer proved he could do no wrong when he scored those two. Yes, they were long, arduous films with confusing plots and too much happening, but I don't feel like they were necessarily bad. Have you rewatched DMC lately? The special effects in that film are still fantastic.
@@thedudewhomadethisvideo I felt like if they were going to carry it on, they should have made Jack Sparrow the POTC equivalent of sequel-trilogy Luke Skywalker. Imagine that, Sparrow becomes a living legend who has isolated himself on the Pearl who has to be convinced to come home by Will Turner's son when some other pirate folklore character returns i.e. Blackbeard, Davy Jones, Kraken 2: Electric Boogaloo, Long John Silver, whoever else.
@@joshdaly7599 I agree with your points I think a lot of people seem to take these films way to serious,it had some memorable characters and think they seem to miss the point of depps character he's entertaining both sides of the age group kids can laugh when he's just being silly and adults can chuckle at his innuendos & his luv for rum. Just a pity the money seems to have took a toll on him.
Yeaaaah he's hated them since day one though. In a brilliantly Kermodian way he appears to take the fact everyone hates it now to vailadiate his original thought and say he was always right.
I didn't even like the first one (and consequently haven't even seen any of the others). As far as I'm concerned, the awesome theme tune is the only thing salvageable from the franchise.
First one i enjoyed, the rest (that i've managed to sit through!) - terrible. Mr Mayo also expressed a similar option to which mark replied "No you didn't!"
Johnny Depp doesn't seem to want to play anything other than an off-the-wall character with a British accent who fights with swords. He even managed to shoe-horn it into his Mad Hatter character in Alice in Wonderland.
I actually watched Wolves at the Door a couple of years ago because Mark said it was so terrible and that we shouldn't see it. I was compiling my own worst of the year list at the time and checked it out. He's right, it is trash. I doubt there's a good reason for anyone to watch it.
I am honestly shocked that they managed to write and film this series on a weekly basis, as well as doing the radio show, for ten years. I remember watching this when I was studying film at university! Truly an astonishing effort by everyone involved! Thank you for years of entertainment!
Pirates of the Caribbean 3 is the worst movie I've ever seen. And I was a fan of the first film. The combination of gigantic budget, terrible meandering script and retconning of the original make it a unique stinker. I've seen terrible low budget movies, dreary boring self indulgent tripe, poorly executed adaptations, offensively bad sexist, racist unfunny comedies....but I can derive some entertainment from even the worst of the worst. Literally the whole time I was watching Pirates 3 I was thinking they could have made 200 one million dollar indie films for the same amount of money...well, that and "what the hell is going on?" - absolute garbage.
I actually recently sat through a Pirates marathon at my local cinema (voluntarily). All the movies back-to-back, for 13 hours.. Can’t say I remember the last three, but I still retain the 1st and 2nd were fun.
Why? The whole point about why he's saying it's so bad is that it's just a deplorably exploitative film considering the subject matter. The actual quality of the film on any other level is irrelevant. I, for one, am more than happy to take that at face value. (though I'll concede he doesn't do as good a job here of explaining why you shouldn't see it as in his original review).
But Gods Of Egypt is so inoffensively bad. It starts off gloriously stupid and then just becomes boring. But I can't imagine ever getting angry about it.

Now it will have to be called Kermode Cut.
I didn't know. Nooooo.

Because mayo is moving radio stations.
Shamefully, I have just discovered Kermode Uncut. And of course it’s now ending :( please consider continuing, at least the end of year lists.
Shmatt S at least you can go back and watch the whole catalogue (every cloud...)
Predictions for top 5: Entourage, Human Centipede 2, Jack and Jill, Movie 43, Sex and the City 2
Entourage will be higher I should think. At least number 2 for me.
That leaves no room for Keith Lemon the Movie
What about Pain and Gain?
Hans Castorp for mark that list sounds spot on
5. Keith Lemon
4. Dirty Grandpa
3. Sex and the City 2
2. Pain and Gain
1. Entourage
Other possibles: John Carter, A Danny Dyer film, New Year's Eve, Film Socialisme, The Dilemma, Angels and Demons.
The first Pirates movie was great. The sequels however….
Keyser Soze agreed, first was great but salazars revenge was one of the most soulless films I have ever seen
Yup. How Kermode can have been disappointed by the first one, I do not know. Every one since, however.
The first three are worth watching.
I'll always defend the second and even the third one has merit

Wow, that's profound. What was it anyway? Sounds like an uncircumcised chamber pot.
in the time since transformers revenge of the fallen, mark has not changed his jacket.
I'll die on the hill that Pirates 1 is unironically great
Same. I also enjoy the 2nd one-the score is great. Everything after that is dreck
"A rampagingly stupid movie" 😂😂
Can anyone guess Mark’s 5-1 picks?
I’m gonna say:
5. Pain & Gain
4. Sex and the City 2
3. Dirty Grandpa
2. Entourage
1. Movie 43
2 out of 5, not bad.
Do you think that's Mark's basement he's filming in, or that he broke into someone else's house to record this?
Mark is living in the walls of your house

I’d love to watch the first pirates of the Caribbean with you Mark and see if either of us could change the others mind in some way

Entourage, Movie 43 or Sex&theCity2 for the number 1spot....

You should keep doing the yearly best and worst films, and the films to watch over Christmas even if you're stopping weekly stuff
The weirdest thing about The Hottie and The Nottie is that it basically steals the concept from Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew', lol.
