Christian, Accidentally found this Caravan video.Sooooo much good stuff. Started working with Eric HS. He’s great ,learned from you. I could/should/want to work on all this if I live long enough. 73 and counting!! Lol
I'm really enjoying these play-along tracks. F harmonic minor played from C is also known as C Freygish, a common Klezmer scale. Thinking of it that way helps me keep the C tonality sound in my head.
@@ChristianHowesViolin I was just listening to your Otherlands discussion with Casey Driessen. I love that stuff. Made me think more about the exoticism of Caravan. I doubt that Duke Ellington and Juan Tizol had much exposure to Klezmer, but the sound was sort of "Middle Eastern" to them. Freygish is the Yiddish name for Phrygian mode.
This is excerpted from a live group class at the end of my 7-week course Creative Strings Workshop. Students in this session had already been studying for 6 weeks to be accustomed to dealing with song forms and other concepts addresses. This is a very common Greek/Turkish/Middle Eastern "mode". It's usually called hijaz, or something similar to that, depending on the language (that's the simple, common description; the full description is more complicated). So, this would be an example of C hijaz, making the C7 chord on the tonic rather than on the 5.
Thanks so much Andrew! Hi Chris. A great lesson. So many great ideas to absorb. Will look forward to listening again to let them sink in more, as I work the applied notes from the suggested scales, and including working the bow groove for the Latin quality possibility to Caravan!. Thank you!
Wow, great song, great lesson. Way too much for me to take in, but I suppose a little at a time. Question: When I looked at a chart for the song, I saw chromatic steps in the melody. Are you playing that? I really struggle figuring out the phrases just by listening. I also struggled with the walk down at the end of the part A melody - I thought it was C to C, but you seem to end on an F.
I always feel like it's my private lesson.
thanks Rich! glad you enjoyed it

Hi Michael- I'm going by memory on the melody; there may be better sources for the written melody. thanks for tuning in!
