The hate for Raiden was so overblown I liked him before and after he became a badass cyborg. It’s kinda funny and sad that it took Raiden getting emotionally tortured and his body getting fucked up beyond belief leading him to becoming a cyborg for some people to actually like him.
I think it just took him actually doing something cool, instead of 7 hours of petty relationship bickering for less than no reason. Yeah, the hate was still overblown, but Kojima did do a massive bait and switch trying to upset fans. And Raiden is pretty annoying in MGS2.

I realise the delivery undermines this, but when Raiden immediately radioes in after spotting his first guard, it's to report on his equipment so they can attempt to identify them. It's not to go "oh no enemies."

Perspective from someone playing these games for the first time this year: I quit playing the first Metal Gear Solid due to the sequence where you have to shoot Sniper Wolf while balancing taking nerve-calming drugs, health packs, and getting the scope view knocked completely away every time you're hit (realistic but pain in the ass with the controls, which can only move the cross-hairs slowly back into place, by which time you're about to get shot again). Watched the rest of the game (Twin Snakes version) on RUclips along with the first two MSX games and was glad I didn't have to actually play them. I then began Metal Gear Solid 2 with a sense of dread because I had bought the entire series without playing any of them and was afraid due to the first one that I would not like playing this one either, but found myself playing through the whole thing and enjoying it. So, for me, coming to the series anew in 2019, MGS2 was a better experience. I didn't mind Raiden at all, but of course I came to the game with the advance knowledge that Snake would not be the main character and that Raiden was intended to be a commentary on gamers.
There's a trick to the Sniper Wolf sequence, though. If your aim gets blown away, you can unequip the weapon, turn towards her in 3rd person (although, you're probably looking that way already) and equip the weapon again to reset the aim. I don't remember ever beating it without using this.
I used to think that nothing could top Super Bunnyhop's MGS in-depth analysis. Oh boy I was so wrong.
From mimicking your old slow narration from your 2015 MGS2 review to stuff like mimicking your points you made in the first half of your video in the second "Raiden half", plus small stuff like glitches and old UI which informed what music was played. And a nice rundown on the crazy second half of the game. I'm forgetting a few thinks, but I saw it. You've gone way beyond dude!
Have you read Agnus Kaku's interview? All that science and information mumbo jumbo was what she added. The Japanese script, I read, is quite dry.
Also, nice little MGS Ghost Babel. I didn't know about Shinta, however I'm surprised you didn't touch on Tomokazu Fukushima, as people tin-foil hat it as the guy that "controlled" Kojima, though I think you may bring this up on on your MGS4 retrospect.
Thanks man! I still think George's video is a better analysis of this game on it's own. I'm trying to look at the series as a whole a bit more, bringing up only the things that'll be relevant later.
Also yeah I read her interview. She does NOT like Kojima haha. Can't really blame her either. I don't even wanna think about what it would be like to translate something like this. And if what she said is true about making the mumbo jumbo more elegant then she's also a great writer in her own right.
As for Tomokazu Fukushima though, trust me that I'll get to him in due time. I don't want to front load everything, and the way that I have it planned now, is that I'll bring him up once I talk about MGS4. Kojima's writing team kinda fell apart during 4's development, so that seems like the right time to reflect on it, especially with the change in tone of the series from that point on.

Fun fact: Kojima's original idea was to replace the bombs with steel beams which you had to melt.
Unfortunately, he found that it was impossible.

The katana analog stick controls felt absolutely amazing. I wish you could unlock it for the entire game but I know you can use it in VR missions in subsistence while playin as ninjy Raiden.
Loved your revirew. I still feel the whole meta-textual shit could have been explored further, but I don't blame you for that. Perhaps I should do my own video-response in the defense of Twink twank Raiden. But I will not.

These are so awesome!
As a kid i didn't understand most of MGS2's plot and now as a fat 34 year old i still don't get most of it.
I just enjoy the gameplay which still holds up really well. Also it's still impressive how many cool details and gameplay quirks Kojima and his boys managed to squeeze in to everything.
I imagine it was Kojima's intention to confuse morons like me who just wanted another wacky anime army sneaky shooty game.
I found that reading 1984 really helps understand what Kojima was going for in MGS2’s meta commentary.
He essentially translated 1984 into the digital realm with MGS2.

I played MTG 2 when I was about 8 years old and it took me a while.. But I understood most of the plot. By really studying everything deeply for hours lool. The plot was amazing and the characters too!

In terms of quality, I think MGS 3 is the best game in the series, but MGS 2 is my favourite, and I consider MGS 1 to be the classic.

Ironically it seems that he was putting in too much after 3. He had a team of writers for MGS1 through 3, that fell apart during the development of 4. He got some new people on board, but he was also left with more control then he had before. Hence why things got a bit more.. uh "indulgent" so to say.

I'm gonna be honest, I had no idea what Ar Tonelico even before just now googling it, so I wouldn't bet on me ever doing a retrospective. But who knows, my list of "jrpgs to review" is huge already, so I might as well throw some of them on there.

Agnes Kakou??? Lets get serious... Agnes Kakou as an argument is debatable... Are MGS and Kojima considered some of the big things happened in the videogame industry? Absolutely! Is Kojima considered one of the most influential videogame designers? Of course... We know that the MGS games were created by many people but he is literally the mastermind behind most of the ideas and concepts! End of story! Nobody can prove that he is a bad writer after all... The worldwide success he has achieved with his creations really defies the minority of the subjective opinions that exist!

I know Ghost Babel wasn't technically cannon. But I still believe that the ending, since you're called Jack, it is actually Raiden going through VR Training before SoL and all training was similar to Snake's actual mission in Shadow Moses to test and push the Trainee to become a version of Snake. (Or clone with different appearance) Remember the Patriots were always actively trying to re-create Big Boss and then Snake after shadow moses. Being in VR, your Avatar could look different than what the person playing actually looks like. You know, like YOU playing Snake. Thank me later for lore depth. ;)

I will never understand people who hold MGS2 as a fond memory. The story that Otacon banged his step mom that made his dad kill himself and almost his sister... I was like "This is supposed to be a metal gear solid game?" I know there has been some weird and questionable stories that aren't super important to the plot. But what in the heck was this melodramatic and dark story line supposed to do? Make Otacon seem "deeper"? I already sorta understood who he was from MGS1 and stuff so this all feels so vexing to me and maybe it's just not as obtuse as I'm seeing it. Maybe Kojima just wanted to write some seriously messed up incest suicide stuff but then why force it into MGS2? It's so, so weird.
If there's one totally 100% accurate thing I've learned from fapping to entirely too much hentai, it's that Japanese men *fucking love* two things: incest and nonconsensual cuckoldry.

Although I have to admit that even as a wee lad, this didn't quite fly over my head and felt like Otacon was taking too many undeserved beatings via plot. It feels way awkward and lopsided.
I love it because it's fucking weird even for Metal Gear standards. Sure, it's not the best in the series, but the fact it goes too far with the references, weird conversations, and lack of sense make it my favourite in the series.
It seems to supplement the interpersonal character drama between him and Emma-- the sister he failed to develop a bond proper with--who would die in his arms after reaching minimal closure. This works to serve the narrative of Hal as a tragic sidekick who gets the girl and loses much more. Kinda makes sense why he would then devote the rest of his life to ending the nuclear proliferation of metal gear with his dad boy bff sS O R I D sS N A K E

MGS2 just seems really uncharacteristically bad for the series. I don't know if it was intentional or just lazy, but wow... that game really disappointed me when it first came out. It was literally just a poor man's copy of the first game but with a new coat of paint.
