I own the Ally X and planning to replace my 5800X3D desktop system with it.. i'm done building massive expensive desktop system....especially with graphics card prices keep increasing each generation and costing more usage of power and heat. Need to upgrade the storage from 1tb to 4tb and purchase an eGPU with dock
Hey man great video I followed step by step and it runs awesome, graphics are really good and high fps. It’s also runs perfect in handheld mode. Just letting you know for those that have had issues mines runningg great on and off the egpu 👍
I think the best combination is GPD Win Mini + G1 + Odin 2 mini. The win mini works as x86 computer/gaming on the go and can be plugged to a monitor to work as desktop together with the G1 for gaming. The odin 2 mini is lightweight and has longer battery life on the go and can quietly stream games on the couch with ultra settings from the win mini plugged into G1 on the desktop.
Excellent Video. Two problems I had that are not mentioned. 1) I was forced to unlock bitlocker when changing startup options to safe mode. 2) could not use my PIN or fingerprint to login via safe mode so I then had to make my login local.
For bitlocker you obviously need the key, which if you don’t have will be on your Microsoft account page. For safe mode I had to use a USB keyboard. To change my account to local I went to manage account settings and forced it.
So I did all of the above steps mentioned, changed the GPU out, and it hangs on the Republic of Gamers screen. DO YOU HAVE to use a .8m cable with the ROG Ally? I'm currently using a Cable Matters 2m cable. Is that why I'm having issues?
If you want to use egpu with internal screen over tb or usb4 you need to aim better picture quality not the fps. I use usb4 nvme enclosure with 6600xt-6700xt-4070 ti super, all of them gives 60+ fps with more than doubled quality compared to 780m. It is because of the limited bandwith of tb or usb4 when you lower the resolution and quality more bandwith used for transfering images to the internal screen. 60 fps uses less bandwith than 90 fps. Usb4 is much better btw.
Great video, meaty with information but concise in presentation--with a setup guide to boot. Any plans to try to reproduce this with the Ally X running on Bazzite?
So after I do the installation on safemod and everything is intall wen u unplug the rog ally x and play regular it will not required to install the drivers again ?? Because every time I disconnected i have to install the amd drivers again
I been at a crossroads with this i have a beefy pc 7900xtx 5800x cpu now im looking to upgrade cpu mobo etc. But im struggling do I do that or just make a dock egpu the 7900xtx for my main desktop and turn the older 5800x into a mini pc home server hybrid. Or keep my pc get the 9800x3d and just use the rog whenever i travel. idk im conflicted.
question - could we use the other usb-c port to hook to a dock and get ethernet that way? like will the 2nd usb-c support this while connected to the EGPU with the 1st usb-c?
Hi joey! I have a question with the use of gpdg1 (100w) + external monitor + lossless scaling [2x] while playing games that exceeds 100w [ie: wukong] does it also crash the system? Thanks!
a possibly stupid question-- if you're deleting old drivers and replacing them with the appropriate ones for the eGPU, does that mean it will no longer function well when not connected to the eGPU? Can you still undock it and play in handheld mode without issue?
Not a stupid question! Nope, all works the same as before :) I haven't come across anything broken or different as of yet. Lots of people have used the official AMD drivers for months.
The best driver to install for the rog ally x to work with one x egpu without crackling noise is the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT, you can thank me later 👊🏽👊🏽
hi there, my device is ryzen 7 6800U which has radeon 680M in it. after i check all the list there's no model called radeon "AMD Radeon (TM) 680M Graphics" there's only AMD Radeon (TM) 680M and AMD Radeon (TM) Graphics. In this case what should i choose? please help
i've always wanted something like this but I would be 100% using the internal screen. In fact I would love a device without any internals, that was just a screen and controller to connect to my pc, don't care that it would need to be wired 100% of the time.
Note I was running 100W mode. So I plugged a power supply in the other AllyX port and crashing stopped. So it was capping on the power pass-through from the GDP.
An eGPU and handheld PC are great if you travel, but I don't-at least not much. My setup is a beefy PC with a powerful GPU that's connected via Ethernet, and a tablet with an AMOLED screen. I stream using Moonlight and have a Gamesir G8+ attached to my tablet. It feels native, it's quiet (since my PC is in another room), has insane battery life, weighs almost nothing, and features a beautiful, big screen. I've also tried using this setup away from home, and it’s surprisingly capable there too. Nothing beats this setup
Yup, i would've loved sticking with a beefy computer setup, but I got an Ally X as a way to game in airports and hotels while still having a work laptop.
Yeah im struggling with that also. Tried connecting directly no go... tried Bluetooth no go but maybe it's because I'm stuck at the bit locker screen 🙄
Yes, but the OG Ally with Z1X is even better with the XG mobile 4090. The bandwidth is much faster using their External PCIE Slot. Resulting in fewer lost frames compared to USB 4 speeds
It’s really not that hard. The biggest one is cutting back on the number of devices you need. So if you have an ally but need a computer for doing some work. Well instead of buying another pc. Buy an eGPU. (Side note. Not all eGPU enclosures are expensive)
@@iamnotyourbuddyGUY who said you couldn’t goofball. Read what I said again. And why is it that y’all think everything is about speed alone. If that was the case yes we would all just build a pc and handhelds wouldn’t exist
@iamnotyourbuddyGUY but then you'd have an Ally X and a computer that smokes it. This is an option or upgrade path for people who already have one. Also, in my case, I need a portable setup, so it's a laptop and ROG Ally. I get to play games on the go (on planes a lot) and have my laptop for work. When home, I get a more powerful device with an egpu.
My next console will be a steamdeck 2 or Rog Ally 2. Leave egpu at home and travel with the handheld.
No ps6 for me.
you should put GPD G1 in the title. Nice video, thank you for the effort! long time subscriber here.

I had the same plan as you, stash it on the coffee table and use it on the couch. And it failed the wife test for me, too. :(
Great minds!

Also in Bazzite I only have to let it boot into KDE and it's good to go. No messing with drivers and much simpler than Windows.

Yep you can.
Does the igpu run with no issue with the new drivers?
would love to see this with bazzite, as that's the only os i'd ever use on the rog ally x
Maybe on another channel, I have no interest in Linux lol

Hey man awesome video. How does this setup work with a 4k monitor at 1440p and 4k? What performance would you get?
Bad performance. The GPU inside of the enclosure is like a $250 card
So basically for the internal screen it is useless but for the external its useful
Its saying my pin is not available after reebot in safe mod what can i do

No the regular ally only has rog egpu line
Nice job on the video. That’s hilarious, take a gaming handheld and turn it into a portable desktop pc.

Like a PS Portal for PC
@@aidengillzy not really, the ps portal is still just a streaming device with huge latency and decoding issues

You could buy a small portable monitor and get a telescopic controller. Sunshine is also really useful for streaming games

I wish to play RE4 remake handheld 60fps at native resolution without upscalers (FSR/DLSS) and I don't need anything else.
Can I use it in rog ally xtreme? The white version?
Negative the og ally doesn't have that USB 4 port. Gotta buy that overpriced egpu for like 1100.00. I can't remember the name.

I feel like no company would go Thunderbolt 5 unless they have no choice because consumers will not buy as much
Using GPU Vida, portable gaming device, destroys the part where you buy it in the first place
I might have missed it but how am I going to bring up the keyboard in safe mode?
Have to connect a keyboard.
Thanks! So do I need a dock to do that or am I able to still use a connected wireless keyboard?
Yeah im struggling with that also. Tried connecting directly no go... tried Bluetooth no go but maybe it's because I'm stuck at the bit locker screen 🙄
@@PurpleEZLink In safe mode you have to use it wired, if you have a USB-C keyboard it's easy, plug it right into the ally, if not, you need a dongle

Nope. Intel processor.
