    I think its great youve made a video explaining the TB controllers on youtube so more people can get educated about it before purchasing.
    I've been fairly active on reddit making posts and commenting on posts for the last month or so about this as well as I learned the hard way - purchasing onexgpu and the Razer core x without really looking too far into it. Have had the UT3G for a month now and the experience has been fantastic.
    Keep up the good work :]

    I extended my Spectre X360 15 2-in-1's (2018, i7-8550u) shelf life by getting an Aorus Gaming Box 2070 back in 2020. Best purchase decision I've made in awhile. Managed to snag the bugger for 550$ which is a steal cause it's an enclosure + RTX2070 combo no bigger than a tissue box. My 15" 2-in-1 works as a tablet/2nd monitor when in work mode, and when I'm gaming I'll turn off the internal screen so the full bandwidth goes to my 32" 4K monitor. Have been enjoying 1440p gaming in latest games (highest settings, no rtx) at 40+ frames. With lossless scaling though it becomes a 1440p 60fps powerhouse!! People think LS is only good for handhelds, but within the eGPU context it's totally beneficial too!! I've stopped using my 2-in-1 as a laptop now and more as a glorified tablet that can game when combined with an eGPU. Tech from 2018 + 2020 = 6 years of good value so far

    Oh nice! Had no idea about the different thunderbolt controllers. I was considering something like the "dead robocop" but was going to build a black frame, wrapping it in a breathable fabric and placing it on top. That way it will have a little dust protection and look a little nicer (think a home theatre subwoofer). Maybe even throw in some LEDs if I'm feeling fancy lol

    I've gone down the route of a Fractal Terra case with a MSI 790 motherboard, Intel I5 14500 LGA 1700 and gigabyte 4070 for my OLED screen. It's a total beast of a setup and I'm getting way over 120 FPS in almost all of my AAA games. I ordered a GEM 12 oculink PC from Ali but it is trash. It keeps turning off within minutes of being on and the supplied wall PSU is totally dead so that's going back for a refund. Thanks for the great videos and your recommendations. But I hope you go the same route as I have, you will not regret it as I think it should remain separate. Ally X for gaming outside the house and dedicated Mini/micro PC for your 4k TV.

      Epic setup, definitely the way for max performance! I'm still testing this new eGPU setup with the ADT UT3G but so far, with my 4070, I'm getting around 90FPS at 4K on Tsushima, Star Wars Outlaws added ray tracing stuff off between 100-120 FPS at 1440p, with the ray tracing stuff on around 90, A Quiet Place maxed at 1440p solid 90. Pretty happy so far with no issues! (Other than at Ubisoft for their Snowdrop engine breaking with windows 24H2 being installed but that's a them problem)!
      So far this is awesome as I can use my ALLY X handheld at my desk/the studio/outside etc. then 2 cables in and decent performance on my 77" OLED TV! I'll keep testing and making these video updates but ultimately, if something happens that borks it totally I'm definitely just making a mini PC for the TV using the parts I have, only need a mobo/cpu/RAM haha!

    If you're focused on couch gaming, rather than going the EGPU route, why don't you just use Moonlight/Sunshine to stream from your main pc, All the power of desktop with almost no drawback, I have my pc to Wake on Lan so that when I load up moonlight on my legion go, I can switch my pc on from downstairs and connect without having to travel to it at all. This isn't a rant by the way, just curious on the thought process.

    • @128KB
      @128KB  3 дня назад

      I discuss this exactly in the previous eGPU video (I think it's that one), and over on the podcast channel. I have SOOO many smart home devices/security cams/other devices connected to our network, something was causing interference with my Moonlight/Sunshine streaming. Every 5mins there'd be horrendous stuttering/delay, making the experience unplayable, I wasn't prepared to disable absolutely everything to find the culprit so decided to go this route!
      You're right though, Sunshine/Moonlight or even GeForce now will be a much easier solution for many but also for many the ALLY X is their only device or even PC, so this could be a great route for them.

    • @lee141292

      @@128KB Ahhh apologies, I'm not a regular and just came across this video randomly, I'll have to check out the previous ones. If the Ally X is the only device then yeah makes perfect sense to go egpu route, save some money and some space over a big hulking pc sat in a corner somewhere (or on a desk if you like to show off your tech).
      As for your stuttering issue. I had a similar problem at the start when I tried moonlight/Sunshine, the cause turned out to be the way my devices connected to each other within my household. I have quite a thin but long property and running ethernet cables everywhere wasn't an option for me so opted for some powerline APs which turned out to be the route cause of my stuttering. While I was getting almost the full speed of my network through them, they induced some sporadic latency. After moving to mesh based APs with either wired, wireless (or both) connections, the stream from my pc was much more stable. Just food for thought in case you had a similar setup.
      I'll be keeping an eye on the development of your situation, I'm a bit tech obsessed so very interested in seeing your egpu results. 😁

    I've also gone down the eGPU route, using a Razer Core X Chroma housing. It a bargain at £150, but the PSU did make a scary pop sound every time I plugged it into the mains. So without risking the 4070Ti I've hacked into the case, I decided to update the PSU to a modular type from Cooler Master (V850 sfx). Its tiny and the plug socket hole lines up really well without any dremel work :). After watching your video about these latest eGPU boards with the greater performance, I might look into seeing if I can fit one in the Chroma's housing.

    There is a 4th variant:
    USB4v1 M.2 NVMe SSD enclosure(which uses the same controller as the ADT-Link UT3G) + M.2 to Oculink adapter + Oculink eGPU module.
    I haven't tried this and I'm not sure how reliable it is. There are some posts on reddit and other places.

    • @128KB
      @128KB  27 дней назад

      Ah yes you're right, I didn't include this since it's the same controller but it would likely get better performance again since it has the Oculink adapter but also requires modding of the ALLY X shell to allow the port to be accessible and also means you no longer have an internal SSD, you'd have to run an external SSD. To me that kinda renders the ALLY X no longer portable so didn't want to address that!

    I have never really understood the egpu concept. It seems that it only makes sense if it you are adamant about not having a desktop and only having a laptop(without a dedicated gpu) or a handheld like the Ally X. If you have a desktop the most efficient means of having the same functionality is to stream to your handheld or get an android TV box and use moonlight/steam link to stream to a TV. You can get streaming clients for ~$20. If you already have a desktop you could put a streaming client device on every TV in your house for a fraction of what it would cost to complete an egpu setup.

    • @128KB
      @128KB  Месяц назад

      I discussed my streaming venture in one of our podcasts over on 128KB Podcast. Unfortunately, even with Moonlight/Sunshine, streaming wasn't viable, huge stuttering every 30mins or so from some interference, guessing from one of the many smart devices in our home and didn't want to disable absolutely everything and go one by one until I found the culprit. For many, streaming will be fine, for others and enthusiasts a dedicated build or eGPU is a better route.
      The eGPU concept makes sense, turn your already owned lesser device into a more powerful one for less than the price of a full desktop build. All your need is a GPU/PSU/Controller board. In practice, unfortunately, it's way more of a faf than I'd like it to be! Turning the ALLY X into your one and done hybrid is possible though.

    • @7MBoosted
      @7MBoosted Месяц назад

      @128KB I have found that with streaming, it is vitally important to have at least the host wired directly to the network. I also have several dedicated computers for various use cases, so I am not in a position where an egpu is relevant to my needs. I prefer, when home, to be able to sit on my couch and stream my games at 120fps+ to my Ally from my much more powerful pc in my office and get 6+ hours of use out of my Ally if I want. I understand I am probably an outlier, but that is just me.

    I have absolutely gone down the egpu path, and have determined that it's just not worth it in virtually any way.
    I first got a GPD Win Max 2 a couple of years ago. It only had a usb-4 port (not an oculink port yet). I then purchased an Nvidia GPU and a Razer Core. Through USB-4, it had decent performance on some games, and absolutely horrendous performance on others (Spider-Man Remastered over usb-4 had worse performance than just playing it natively on the 6840u igpu). I then tried a Titan Egpu enclosure, and it must've had an updated controller, because it did improve performance, but still had terrible performance in some games.
    I then purchased a Win Max 2 2024 and a GPD G1 Egpu, which both have oculink ports. Let me tell you, oculink is far more stable and performant than USB-4. The only issue is that you can't plug in Oculink while the PC is on. The G1 needs to be powered on, then the PC. It's not hot pluggable. Also, the G1's fans are loud and sometimes some games use the igpu instead of the G1. Yet another another annoyance is that you need to change the graphic settings every time you switch from playing in handheld mode and on the TV. It's just so inconvenient.
    Even though oculink is much better, I still think egpu's are just not worth the extra cost and hassle. It's far better to get a mid range tower pc, and have a Steam Deck or Rog Ally, and then just use cloud saves. I think the best setup for my needs would be a living room mini tower PC using Bazzite (or an official Steam OS image if that ever releases) and a Rog Ally X. And then eventually a Switch 2 for the Nintendo exclusives. That covers virtually every gaming situation I would want to be in.

    Fun Fact: you know what the BEST route to get an eGPU type of setup for your Ally device, about a year ago? Using an XG Mobile. Luckily for me, a lot of you content creators cried about how expensive it was and how 'useless' it was that you got ASUS to drop the connection to it on their Ally X...which coincidentally dropped the price considerably. I got a ROG Ally with a 4090 for $1500. With an eGPU performance of 60gbps (versus your setup of about 32 gbps or worse with stutters/artifacts). Yeah. Stutter-free/artifact-free 4k/locked 60fps on Cyberpunk 2077 without using any frame gen nonsense. So keep screaming/crying/shilling because your audience would rather make excuses than understand that good things need to be purchased if they're good and not whined about in hopes that they give it to you for free (I guess?) because when they do that, it's profitable for some people out here.

    I'd just buy the GPD G1 and not bother with building one yourself. You can get around the issues of AMD driver clash quite easily. 7600m XT is more than good enough for desktop gameplay. RTX 4070 or higher will just be far too bottlenecked on a Thunderbolt 4 port, pointless using that GPU and taking a huge performance cut in my opinion.

      @@Saif0412 you can use up to a 4070 Super really, anything above that is bottlenecked. As explained in the video, the asmedia controller of the UT3G has the biggest bandwidth and lowest amount of bottleneck, isn't pointless at all. It's modular & upgradable since you can swap the card out. The prebuilts enclosed units are fine, as I explained but they're not as good performance wise nor are they upgradable/future proof but they're great for people that don't want the hassle.

    are you really posting this unfinished video with no innovation whatsoever. you go the casual gamer route then proceed to need to tell us your product died. i think the reason you did this is to push the high purchase cost onto others like many of you reviewers on youtube. you're not interested in the base product either. if you don't make another fraudulent review you likely will not see ppl like me pointing out these things and saying you're trying to scam ppl into buying niche products such as Ally X.
