I recently released a video comparing StarLink with Telus for Rural Internet in Alberta. In that video, I complained a but about my experience with my Telus Smart Hub. Telus responded to my video with their answer: the Telus Smart Hub Antenna Program! But, can it make a difference? Let's see.
If you are an existing SmartHub customer, call 1-866-558-2273. If deemed appropriate for your needs, the antenna is currently free of charge for existing customers.
New customers can visit telus.com/smarthub to check if you qualify for a SmartHub. The external antenna, if needed, is a one-time cost of $99 + GST.

Just watched your first video and as a Canadian I can say I am glad to see competitors, we have had issues with our Rogers broadband internet due to them not upgrading our neighbourhood to hybrid fiber and we have been getting high ping and frequent short disconnects, we do not live in a rural area I hope the competition from Starlink will force all Canadian ISP's to become better. Also I recommend you upgrade your router pfSense is great if you want to go DIY

Great video. I also live in central Alberta and have a Telus Smart Hub I purchased about 2 years ago. I was thrilled when I first plugged it in and initially got download speeds of 140 mbps! This was short lived and the speed was throttled soon after. One thing to mention is we reside near a popular lake with a lot of seasonal visitors. In the summer when the population rises, the hub slows down dramatically. The Smart Hub issues you have had like the daily reset, are things I have to do as well. Brilliant idea to remove the battery and cycle it everyday with a timer btw! As I am close to a couple cell towers and have a strong signal, the original smart Hub has worked well. Am seeing connection speeds that are exactly what you have with the new equipment you installed. Working from home has shown some of the limitations of the Telus system and the longer we have owned it the more frequently it requires a reset to keep it functioning. Just signed up for a Starlink Beta. Hopefully it will arrive soon.

I paid out of pocket for a bunch of different antennas and hooked them up myself. They helped a lot, but ya, resetting the internet was a daily thing, and capped at 25 down was garbage for 110 a month. I'll keep my starlink!

Hi. The antenna you got is the type I am using, but in my case (as I commented on your previous video) I am using two in a 90 degree angle. This will create a MIMO configuration that helps with the speed. As I mentioned also, my speed went up from 20-40 Mbps to 60-70 Mbps.

  • @lucky644
    @lucky644 3 года назад

I know you have it dealt with already, but for anyone else who has modem issues and need to reboot often, there are other options out there that monitor if you have a internet connection, and if not they will reboot it automatically via power cycling through a smart plug. The UniFi Smart Power Plug is one that I have had good experiences with.

May I ask how your StarLink dish dealt with the heavy winter snow load? Great videos in this “series”, new sub and keep your stick on the ice! BTW All hail the stick!

I had a telus hub and got incredible speeds, like 200 mbps sometimes. And then i moved slightly farther away (i can walk to my old house in a few minutes) and now it is down to around 5 mbps and dropping all the time. I suspect this is because of trees in the way but i am wondering if there is a way to hook an antenna to the smart hub.

We had Xplornet at our place and it wasn't too long before we cancelled and used our Telus smarthub that we had used at our trailer. We were having home security installed and the system was performing poorly with that so Telus suggested their new 5G smart hub with exterior antenna. When it worked it was great. Amazing speeds. But in the evening it would getted bogged down by other users presumably. Would slow down for no reason during the day and Telus couldn't figure out why. We tried for a couple months and since my husband works from home, we decided to bite the bullet and get Starlink. It should be delivered tomorrow. Fingers crossed we get the same result. We are an hour or so north of you in Spring Lake.

I'm transitioning to full-time RV living and operating an internet-based business that requires a lot of bandwidth to upload/download large data files (sometimes 3Gs each). I need an option that will serve me on the move and in northern Alberta. Would you say Starlink is a good choice? Any advice?

Makes me feel fortunate to have my ridiculously fast internet at home. Although I do miss living in rural Alberta. It's just a nice life living in rural alberta. I used to be outside Irricana. But where I'm currently living in BC I'm getting 1.5Gbps download and 850 upload with my Telus fibre internet haha. I downloaded a game last night that was 116GB and I think it took about 12-13 minutes

Is the smarthub only offered by Telus? Wondering if there is a way to grab it and stick another carrier's sim card in (like AT&T).

its kind of sad that it took ur last video for telus to get there act together...i am also wondering how much the upgraded hub/router and system costs is there an option to install the antena urself if u ever need to move it? star link u don't need and installer at all

is already a red flag that telus only reached out to you after going viral on a video.
how's that to say for other people that also are 'specific people'

I made a comment on your first video because our experiences are so very similar to yours except we have no real issues with our Telus speed (we're only about .5km from the nearest tower) although it is, like yours, artificially limited to the contractual 24mbps. We don't have an external antenna nor the box with 5 antenna's, ours has two, one of which is loose. Our 2 big issues with Telus are that it is incredibly slow for a 2nd connection and has a 250Gb limit, we pay around $90 per month for that amount, the next plan was around $120 for 500gb but I currently can't find it on their awful website, and that cost is more than Starlink which has no bandwidth or speed limitations. It's odd but we've never experienced the issue that you and others mention of having to reset it every day, we leave the battery installed and we have probably only reset it 2 or 3 times in the couple of years we've had it.

The only problem with Telus is that you still have certain date of packages. Otherwise starlink will always be the best. I can't wait to get my kit later on this year

The ever customer service orientated Xplornet decommission my wireless broadband tower yesterday, with no advance warning. Or maybe the fact speed started to degrade 5 days ago, for 4 days they strung me along saying they were fixing the issue. Then, yesterday they tell me the tower is decommissioned! Thanks!
My first thought was the StarLink invitation to Beta I had got in Jan 2021, which I am now very sorry I did not take advantage of, as the invitation has now expired and StarLink says they are at capacity in my area, South of Bragg Creek, AB., and connection may not be until 2023 or later.
So, here I am looking into what may be my only option, Telus Smart Hub. I just know if I sign up for the 2 year contract, they want, that StarLink will come knocking...it's just my luck! As I can find no other options in my area, would you suggest getting the antenna right from the get go?

I think you should place the antennas of your modem in different directions. So you can create the ideal coverage. Not all standing up.

we had rogers rocket hub same brand to ZTE and we also have always had even worse speeds then you mind you we could at least get 3 bars all the time but huge bills as well , star link is wicked fast and cheaper and no data caps on up or down loads .. rogers has the antenna program as well and they would not even attempt to try it for us to improve serivce ., so star link wins for us for sure 1000000000000000000%

I used a potato as my all in one device for streaming, electricity, self defense, and internet for years. Finally, someone offered me fiber(to the modem) for a mere 75$ CAD/month + tax and I jumped all over it. Now my potato gets lighter duties :)

Its in beta and still doesn't have the required 42,000 laser link satellites it's aiming for, it's currently using 1000 radio only satelites.
