  • Topdon sent me their JS3000 portable jump starter to review, which I was eager to try as it is very useful when working around old cars. It’s also a modern jump starter that combines a high-capacity power bank, which is handy for charging modern smartphones, tablets, and laptops. On top of that, it has a very useful torch built into it.
I compare this with my older Snap-on Portable Power 1700, which is now something Portable Power sells directly, as Snap-on has a newer jump starter that is no longer made by Portable Power. The Snap-on is great at starting cars with no battery, whether it's for collecting old scrap or just working with cars that have no batteries. However, for most normal users, the JS3000, which costs less than half the price, is more than up to the task of starting vehicles with flat batteries.
I found the JS3000 quite impressive, particularly in terms of build quality and the features it packs, such as USB-C PD charging and an integrated torch. There are some downsides though, such as the fact that the leads have to be plugged into the side, which makes it bulky, and the 4 LEDs do not give the best resolution as to the battery's state of charge.
I am still using the jump pack mostly as a power bank for the phone when recording videos, but if you want to ask any other questions about it, feel free to ask here in the comments or via the Facebook page for this channel: / pc2cv
