    This is my favorite Commander Series game. I always hoped DVG would come out with Field Commander Game based on The Russian Civil War, using many of the mechanics from Napoleon.

    I had field commander Rommel and was disappointed. I didn’t like how the supply system was used it made the invasion of France harder because of that. The quality of the chits were poor, they were unevenly cut and I had one or two have one side of the chits flake off. Finally there is only three scenarios with Rommel, France 1940, Africa, and D-Day. I’d say try it before you buy it.

    I got this 6-12 months ago and played through all the campaigns. Really enjoyed it. Looking forward to finding time to playing it again. Not sure what your rules issues were. Seemed clear to me. 2-3 hours? 60-90 min for me. I'd often want to set up the next scenario and go again. This game is a 9, maybe a 10 for me. All of the scenarios were beatable with the Russia one the toughest - lost that on the first try or two. Enjoyed your other channel too. Where do you teach?

    i agree with you . the game is lot of fun . i ran into the same issues with some gray areas attacking or moving in certain situations. wish the rule book was a couple pages longer with more precise direction. rumor is DVG is working on a US civil war game incorporating rules from Napoleon. looking forward to it .

    FCN is one of best solitaire games if you are a Napoleonic fan. Knowing that’s it’s very difficult to find good AI solitaire Napoleonic games. It’s a very accessible, low complexity, solid production quality and great value. It was one of my first purchases when I started up wargaming. Big thanks on your review!!

    Good period appropriate music in the intro... Why can't I remember what it is? Great choice. Help me out here. Fur Elise, just got it. Beethoven is intertwined with Napoleon.

    I played all the games in the series and the problem I have with Napoleon is how random and nonsensical are AI moves on the map. Rommel is probably the best in this respect. Also it is much faster. Alexander is quicker too, but has similar issues. Nimitz is a mess at the moment but at least they're working on it.

    I really like this game too. I agree, the way the battle plans are written and explained, can be confusing and feel clunky, but overall, this game is just awesome. Lots of gameplay in the box, and it is not easy, at least for me, to try and match or exceed what Napoleon did. Probably the best solitaire game I own.

  • @danflashes2

    Great review! This is my favourite solitaire game. I agree with your points about the rulebook and need for “house rules”, but once you understand the dynamics it’s fantastic. As you mention, the real strength of this game is the variety of campaigns, and how the game switches up the rules to recreate these campaigns. For example, the Russian campaign has a die roll for weather which will whittle down your army, and in the Spanish campaign you have to deal with uprisings alongside the belligerent armies. This variety is what keeps me coming back.
    Looking forward to more reviews in the field commander series!

    Or Elmos last stand 2 reprint remastered edition?

    • @TheDiscriminatingGamer
      @TheDiscriminatingGamer  3 года назад +2

      I haven't played Elmos last stand 2, not familiar with it. I really liked Columbia's Napoleon: TWC 4th Edition. I am also a big fan of Coalitions - more of a negotiation/wargame from Phalanx now on KS. C&C Napoleonics is still a favorite of mine as well.
