    1. Yes, the battery came half charged but I also charged it up to 100% and that did not solve the problem.
    2. Yes, I tried tightening the seat post clamp with a wrench, I nearly stripped the threads to get it close to clamping.
    3. Yes, I tried to troubleshoot it. Motor works on "walk mode", PAS sensor seems fine, battery is fine. Appears to be damaged controller.
    4. Yes, Walmart took it back for a full refund.

I bought 2 of these from Walmart over 2 years ago. They were both nearly perfect out of the box . We carried them to Nova Scotia in 2019 and went up hills we could never do without electric power. They are still running great today. We get about a 30 mile range at the medium level of assist. I bought them from Walmart because I knew I could get my money back if there was a problem. We’ve had no problems.

      Useful accessories:
plastic tarp, plastic baggies, pill bottles with SCREW top, and a powerful magnet.
Plastic tarp is for everything...to keep carpet clean if nothing else.
Anything with possible springs or other disassembly "missiles" like tube clamps, split rings, etc...I try to disassemble INSIDE a plastic bag...a trash bag if necessary for larger items with small parts that can "fly away". Doing so has saved me a LOT of time. I didn't do this ONE time in the past few years and a very tiny spring flew away and it took me over 2 hours to find it even in a relatively medium nap carpet.
I've also placed a neodymium "power" magnet next to a part I thought might try to escape during disassembly, and that has helped a few times, too by "catching" the part before it could even launch.

The end result is that the consumer will get a product that will potentially be unsafe to use and will not last long enough to be worth the outlay.

I bought this HYPER e-bike last month. I put it together, checked everything. The battery was charged up 3/4 way. No problem with it. It's a "pedal-assist" bike. No throttle there to play with It works great. In LOW power mode, I use my legs pretty good, no problem cruising with 11-12 mph speed. I like this mode because I get some excersize at the same time. The MEDIUM mode works good too, but it moves me faster then I can pedal. But I can go up to 1-17 mph speed. The faster HIGH mode then just push me like a "rocket" out. It goes easily 20-23 mph with not much pedal-assist. Great bike. No complain. I replaced the seat , it was too "skinny" for me, but other then that, it just works fine and I bought for $598.00 at Wal-Mart, but it works just fine for me. I'm George in Hollywood Beach, FL and 73 yrs "young". KEEP ON PEDALING...

A sample size of one is plenty to see what components are used, and the care with which the bike is made. Combine those observations with background knowledge and you can form an expectation. When the sample confirms the expectation, plus has a few negative surprises easily attributable to one-offs, you really should draw a conclusion.
My conclusion? You are unlikely to get a quality e-bike for $400. It might work, as might your Yugo. And like the e-bike, you are unlikely to get a quality Yugo (or a BMW that doesn't need frequent dealer visits).

When I can buy a good quality washing machine for 400 , I would expect to buy a reasonable quality ebike for around 500. Excluding the battery, there’s around the same level of parts/engineering in each.
I paid 1200 for an ebike, and around another four hundred to get it right. Most of the problems were with the bike parts, spokes, brakes crank etc. not the electric bits. I don’t know why people tolerate the extortionate prices for bicycle parts. In my experience, paying more for a bicycle, electric or not, does not necessarily translate into a better product.

I like your work and you are the expert, so I'm not going to fuss about your findings here, but in defense of Walmart--and I still work at one and I was a bike assembler for eight years and truly enjoyed it--their boxed bikes, in the hands of a quality assembler, turn out pretty well and get rolled to the sales floor where they sell, often, that same day or even hour. (I even experienced rolling bikes to the display rack and selling them before I even placed them in the rack.) And so with yours, sure, the brakes and the seat clamp need adjustment, perhaps the wheels need a bit of truing and that cable needs straightening. And usually, the whole everything needs an honest once or twice over, the usual bike shop treatment. And Walmart will take it back, no problem, they are famous for that, no hassles. But it'd be more interesting to see you trouble-shoot it first, like, what is wrong with it, sensors or connectors or wires or what? It could be simple or it could be serious, and you are the perfect person to tell us what's up with that. And a couple of years ago, for an older friend, I set up a Walmart e-bike which he purchased at walmart.com. And it went together perfectly and it was a cool experience--he can't drive his cars anymore, due to health, but he has a mint Model T and a Sixties T-bucket hot rod in his garage.

Hey, I usually never comment on stuff but I’ve purposely been waiting for a video from you with a video with this bike. You got me into e-bikes/mountain bikes for commuting and getting places/trails, but this bike, yes it may be cheap but change a couple factors on it and it’s a great bike. One main things if you read through their book, you gotta charge it for 4 hours before any use to get the battery’s full effect, so far, one of my longest rides I got almost 17 miles in just over an hour on low and medium assist. I’ve done A LOT of looking into these bikes and everything, yes the more expensive bikes are beyond great, plan to get one for more extreme trails, but a couple upgrades to this bike and not insistingly killing the battery it’s a great bike my mans, I was iffy at first my self but give it a shot.

The original owner had the same problem as you but waited too long to return it. I spent six hours fixing the wiring problems and now it works okay. The rotor handle gear shifter is the absolute worst even though it is a Shimano But the motor and battery work great. The seat sucks so I replaced it with a used one I had lying around. I will probably sell it or upgrade it into an urban assault E.V. that I don’t worry too much about getting stolen 😀

I cheaped out on my first bike, it lasted 6months before the battery swelled and stopped working, take into account this was 2013, batteries were not cheap, it'd be another 6 months before I built my first battery, 106ncr18650b cells, was a beast, lasted 22,200km before some damaged cells failed. Also that walmart bike, there must've been something to do with the sensor wires back to the controller as you were saying, as you know the controller is fine, the motor was working and screen. That literally only leaves the sensor, Micah did you check the wire terminations. I know it's obvious for you but in my experience Occam's razor normally helps. Always check the stupid bits first. I'm guessing you checked off camera.

A-A Ron said, _106ncr18650b cells, was a beast, lasted 22,200km before some damaged cells failed_
Good quality cells make a HUGE difference.
Unfortunately, one must continuously watch out for COUNTERFEIT lithium cells even when they appear identical to name-brand cells. At times even the reputable battery pack manufacturers have problems receiving a shipment of counterfeits from their lithium cell suppliers. It's a business with a lot of corrupt practices and fraud. I had one supplier sell me supposedly "NCR18650B" cells only to have them fail in sample testing upon receipt with 100% of the order having only (if my memory is right) LESS than 50% of the specified mAh capacity per cell. Every external indicator including the weight suggested they were legitimate "NCR" cells. Only an battery electrical analyzer found the fraud. Safety can be a problem as well with counterfeit lithium cell poor quality manufacturing. There is no way to know who actually made those cells. The supplier wanted to "fix" the problem by me keeping the cells and refunding me 50% of the price. NO DEAL and reported.

A couple of years ago, I wanted to get back into bikes and bought a Hyper Hydroform from Walmart online. I wanted to get around town faster, and hopefully lose some weight in the process. That didn't happen.
Out of the box, the paint was chipped and the reflector(s) was broken. The literal first time I attempted to ride it, the derailleur sheered in two. Barely 10 seconds on it, no lie.
In fact, ALMOST EVERY time I placed my booty butt cheeks on that bike, something broke. The usual culprit was the rear derailleur. I didn't want to give up on it just yet and wanted to learn how to fix it and become more mechanically inclined. Maybe I should have just gotten my money back.
At one point, I wanted to turn it into an E-bike. That was a whole other world of problems. Only got it to work a couple of times. Eventually about half a year ago, I figured I'd make my own battery pack for it and turn it into a trike.
...It still sits in the back unfinished to this day.
Honestly I think the frame, tires, and handle bar were fine. But you're right. For everything else, they were just so cheap that they broke far too easily and totally ruined my biking experience.
Now, I still don't think you should spend 1k, 2k, 3k+ on a starter bike just to casually ride it around sometimes. There are some people that do that.
I spent $200 thinking it'll be fine and I'll upgrade later, but it wasn't. I had to upgrade several parts immediately just to be able to get more than 10 minutes of ride time out of it.
