I have a 1957 Fender Duosonic, I bought in 1968 when I was 11 years old from a neighbor. I played in bands for years. Still have it but it stays home now, my 1972 Telecaster and '86 Strat go on the road with me.

This is the best demo of this guitar that I've seen (maybe 8-9 vids). Great colour, great tone and as always great playing.

Now here's a guitar the designers hit out of the park. Everything done right! All matches very well! Too bad no belly cut and that happens occasionally where everything is done right, imo. Thanks for sharing!

I agree. I watched a lot of video reviews before buying mine. None of them showcase the range of sounds and styles this can do as well as Mr. Bischoff has done here. If I'd come across this one a year ago I wouldn't have needed to watch anything else - I'd have been down to the shop like shit from a goose wanting to check one out!

Great demo, you can really tell what tones this guitar can give you by the wide range of notes and effects played (how he picks strings, hammers, etc), and also of course by changing the pickup positions. Also, the solos were very pleasant, for several minutes I forgot I was watching a review and just enjoyed the solos! Thanks for this, Rich.

I understood the Duo was intended as a low cost student instrument when it was first released. I always thought it looked a bit 'Mickey Mouse' although that particular model being demoed doesn't look so bad. I'm a bit wary of aluminium pick guards and single coil pickups. Aluminium is a good electrical conductor and an aluminium guards acts as a shorted turn around single coils. The eddy current tends to kill the high end response and can make single coils sound lifeless and muffled. And with that top mounted jack, if you stand on the lead, you may put a bend in the guard.

The guitar sounds very good and looks the part too, who cares what conducts better than the other thing as long as the sound is there and this one has it, including the price!

@@dragan4658 Well there are those of us who don't care why the light comes on when we flip the switch and those of us who do, so that when we flip the switch and there is no light we have some idea of how to fix it.

@@ResoBridge Terry, that is a completely different issue but thanks for sharing. Besides, this guitar didnt sound muffled at all so the point is moot. Play guitar and enjoy!

The originals in the mid-1950s had anodized aluminum pickguards, but they were replaced with plastic ones not long after. I'd be very surprised if the pickguard on this particular model/color was in fact aluminum.
Edit: According to shop.fender at the page specifically for the desert sand Duo Sonic, it does indeed have a 1-ply gold anodized aluminum pickguard.

Thanks for this thoughtful demo! I would love your opinion on how it sounds clean? It's sounded a lot thinner than a tele or a strat on a few of the videos I've watched and I'm curious if that's just a byproduct of recording with subpar gear or just what the pickups sound like? Thanks!

    • @RichBischoff

Id like opinions: does having no contour/ridge like on strats, where you might rest your strumming arm on the body make it any harder to play? Also, I have a mustang bass that had a glossy neck and I hated it so much I had to sand it down, (have sweaty hands) is the glossy fretboard on the duo sticky/tough to play?
