  • If it seems like David Sussman has achieved airplane ownership Nirvana, he would probably agree. AVweb spoke with him at U.S. Sport Aviation Expo in Sebring about enjoying financial benefits from a light sport aircraft.

The absolute best way to end up with a million dollars in General Aviation is to start with 2 million.

True, but no one is really in this business for the money.

Doing your own maintenance is the key in this scenario. Otherwise I doubt he'd be cash flow positive.

Who is signing off the 100hr inspection which are required for your type of operation, or are you a A&P with inspection authorization?

No way in hell would I lease my 172 to a school. You get 80% of the profits but 100% of the maintenance and insurance.

Tyler Jankins you’re the only one hating here. He had a point, although shouldn’t insurance cover that?

Ownership cost you more than you can imagine, never can make profit on it, there's a surplus market in civil aviation airplanes.

Wait why would you not depreciate the airplane on your taxes? Literally said you could but you "don't need too" The only reason you wouldn't need to is if you didn't make any money, which you said you did.

And he may have properties or other forms of cash flow coming in that he already writes off. Those write offs may cover everything he makes on the plane.

Depreciation is a bad idea if it's on something that holds majority of its value and you dont plan on dying with it. Or you want to cash out one day without reinvesting. Or sell the plane for 5k with the rest under the table.

James Rogers or you trade it in for a bigger airplane and show the trade in value way low and take the difference off the purchase price of the next one.

Retired and can apparently afford to just purchase an aircraft. Why is it so easy to make money once you already have it? I'm working my ___ off for tuition money just to get a license.
Anyone want to form an LLC and do this full time?

I don't know how much money this guy is making but just like a car if you loan it to some one you are putting mileage and wear and tear on it and thus more maintenance cost , I guess we have to see the math for this one.

Al Vaghar. but unlike a car a plane doesnt depreciate quite the same.

There are 50 years old planes flying now, and looks as nee. It all depends on the maintenance.
