Wouldn't it be nice to fly for free? Well, there's a way! This video outlines some of the benefits of a leaseback and how it can help pay for your flight training.

I’d also add insurance to the list of costs and the big one that you mention at the end, the possibly engine overhaul. Maybe some type of calc like: if it will cost 30,000 for the overhaul and you have 1000 hours until TBO, that’s 30/hr that you should put away in a fund, so in a 50 hour month that’s 1500 dollars. That cuts down that 3000 profit in half.
What about insurance costs? The liability of renting a plane to students is HUGE....when I did mine it was $700+/month. Also....what about database subscriptions to keep your avionics current? Most owners also can't flat out own a plane and there will be financing costs on the loan. What about a hangar? Keeping it on the ramp won't do your plane any favors. All I can tell you is leasebacks don't do a very good job of offsetting costs. One bad landing and your plane could be down for 1-2 months and you still have to pay all your fixed costs.....also....you might rent it out 50 hours/month in the summer but come winter you'll be lucky to get 10. I don't recommend leasebacks as a way to offset costs. I can guarantee you won't fly for free.
I thought that the school they lease the plane to keeps it the hangar?
@@TraderPeyton I would hope they do but they will still charge you rent to keep the plane in there.
@@jdmerrit oh man.. I wonder what the cheapest way to get flight hours is then. I want to become a commercial airline pilot but I know nothing about the outline or the cheapest way to get it done.
I know you mentioned it in passing, but I think keeping an explicit reserve for overhaul would be a good idea. Especially in a partnership situation, it’s good to get this agreed up front to avoid surprises that could jeopardize the relationship.
Just some rough numbers but let’s say a 2000hr TBO engine with an overhaul costing 60k - that would be burning $30/hr of “engine time”, or $1500/mo in your example.
Great videos and thanks for sharing your experience!
Yep that’s exactly what we do!
how about getting a frugal LSA that only costs 1/5 to fly of an old junker like a cessna? and even better on maintenance.
I own 1/8 of one and it's always there, some of the guys are mechanics and maintain it. It's like having a plane for free.
Also a really good idea 🤙🏻
Great content guys!
I was talking to a pilot friend about this, and his had a pretty simple question which I could not answer. If you can make money renting a plane like this, why wouldn't a flight school just own and rent planes themselves vs offering to leaseback planes?
A lot of them do, it’s just a preference of the flight school. But If they just lease the plane from owners, all of the burden and cost of maintenance falls on the owner, so the flight school doesn’t have to worry about it. At the same time, it’s completely up to the owner how the plane is maintained - super well, or just barely enough to be legal. Just depends on what the flight school prioritizes
Very informative thanks for sharing 🇿🇦
Looking forward to next stream
love the content, soooo interested in getting my license. so expensive tho
Lease back is no guarantee of profit. Owners are just like renters, they must schedule their hours on availability. If it's a "good school" with a lot of students, it's tough getting on schedule.
I am moving to Florida and seriously thinking about getting a privat pilots license .. 49 years later lol. What advice would you have
Take a look at our video “private pilots license start to finish” it will outline everything!
What about insurance does the flight school insure your plane?
Really helpful video guys. Just curious, how do you find other people that would want to chip in with you to purchase one? I'm the only one out of my current mates that would be interested in buying a plane 💁♂️
We recommend joining Facebook groups. It’s crazy how many people are in those, and how close they are to you!
@@BroPilots Ah k cool. Time to sign up to Facebook again then I guess lol. Thanks very much 👍🏻
Since they do leasebacks NOW why are they not showing their actual numbers? They also forgot a TON of costs: Insurance, 100 hour and annual inspection, engine overhaul fund etc. If a leaseback was a solid investment, everyone would be doing it.
They've said in replies to other comments on this video that they're already accounting for insurance.
How can I study the pilot department?
insurance ?
Included in the monthly “cost” breakdown. We bundled it with the maintenance costs
❤️
Ubuntu would also like to fly for free ;)
Nice
