" The Composition really is this dark/ light relationship. And as long as I have an interesting light/ dark pattern, the painting should work out." - Michael Chamberlain If I can get this, to the level that its instinctively how I see, I sense my painting will be so much more powerful. I had thought I needed to learn about Light and was hyper-focused on that; suddenly had that hit me that it is values, that explains light to the eye. Thanks for another fantastic share! Appreciate your generosity with what you've learned and your painting process.
Appreciate your sharing so much. I always look forward to the Sunday video!

You are so confident and make it look easy to paint this scene on site. Your comments are helpful and I appreciate your sharing your painting process. It's very inspiring and I agree with others that love this painting.
I has a painting session outside for the first time this week. It’s harder than I thought but also so much fun. Makes me appreciate the work you do so much more !
Really nice painting. You have the ability to take a fairly ho-hum scene and transform it into a scene of dynamism and interest a appeal! This is super appealing to me! Thanks!
Not only are your videos enjoyable to watch but you make good use of the time. Many Other youtubes waste a lot of time in introductions or poorly organized. I always know yours will be concise, yet complete.
I really liked the end result of this picture. I expected just another street scene and was delighted this one was different with great colours and atmosphere.
Bravo maestro! I'm practicing buildings now, I want to follow your steps because I think the bay area and west coast, USA, is one of the best places in the world to capture big city oceanic atmosphere. 😊
Michael, I've watched most of your videos, and joined Patreon as well. I think this painting is fantastic! Possibly my favorite painting of yours ever! Great job!
Awesome painting with valuable tips! Is it possible to show longer video versions for Patreon subscribers? I would enjoy added segment portions that have no on-site narration or have voice over.
Awsome work.have learnt so much from you regarding just working with shapes and tone PS you have quite an infamous name sake in Australia namely Michael and Lindi Chamberlin ,baby Azaria and a dingo at Ayres Rock
I have used solvent free gell and just got some of the fluid. As I was buying it, a friend said "be careful to use it only on the top layer because her paint didn't stick to it in bottom layers"!? That makes me nervous. I also mostly use water miscible oils, holbien, cobra, wn and max. They can be mixed with unmodified linseed oil paints with out problems if you want to use up paint you have, it just makes them less water soluable at clean up time (if i do that I use all solvent based mediums) The benefit for me: no worries of a toxic spill on location, no volatile solvents (0) inside, easier clean up than acrylics, faster drytime than unmodified linseed paints, same pigments, w/s mediums work just like solvent ones (WN fast dry is the same as liquin right down to the pink crap that settles out. What is that?)
I have been following you for over a year. I enjoyed watching you grow. Please keep it up. I particularly like the city scapes. I have a question, how do you video yourself in the field? Is someone filming for you, or do you have a tripod set up? Susan
looks great! Question - how do you achieve the scratchy look to your shadow block in? Are you using any medium or thinners at all? Whenever I attempt it, it just creates a wash, almost watercolour look rather than scratchy. thanks for the inspiration - ive learned more from your channel than any other!
That’s a really amazing painting. A great video too.

Yes, I remember the movie from the 80s!
Good morning Michael. This is awesome 👏🏽 can really appreciate the dark/light pattern and those big shapes. Thanks for the video🙂
Good morning Miriam. Thanks!
Wow, amazing painting! For the scrub in phase do you thin out the paint with gamsol or liquin or anything else? What easel do you use?
Thanks! I'm thinning with Liquin in the beginning. I'm using an easel from takeiteasel.com
Good Morning Michael 😎
Good morning Mark!
You make something aesthetic and elevated out of something banal and uninspiring.

I film myself. I use a tripod for some shots but the for most I've got a brush in one hand and the camera in the other.
looks great! Question - how do you achieve the scratchy look to your shadow block in? Are you using any medium or thinners at all? Whenever I attempt it, it just creates a wash, almost watercolour look rather than scratchy.

Thanks! Yes, I'm using Liquin from Winsor & Newton. The natural bristle brush helps create the scratchy look as well.
Thanks for the class! Do you ever did plein air painting with gouache? what is the diference with do with oil? Thanks for any help!
I've never tried gouache!
Is this over the Broadway tunnel?
No it's from Francisco and Leavenworth
