    If you have the chance, gather some needle and leaf litter from your existing forests and spread them around your seedlings as mulch. That way you will be inoculating the soil with all the organisms and fungi that your new forest will need. Speed up succession and speed the transition from pasture to forest.

    Just a tip when using the dibble bar, after you put the seedling in and you are about to close the hole, make sure you move the bar away from the hole so you close the bottom first and you don't trap air.

    • @killwolfs
      @killwolfs 9 лет назад

      It doesn't really matter of course you try to plant them straight but it's more important that they sit hard in the ground. A proper planted plant should not come up if you try to pull it up, like there should be some resistance.

    Mr & Mrs W!
    I have planted 250 baby trees and bushes on my small piece of land here in Scotland (Argyll).
    The species that I have planted are as follows : Beech (5), Copper Beech (2), Oak (20), Maple (Sycamore) (5), Silver Birch (20), Alder (20), Rowan (30), Yew (1), Apple (5), Victoria Plum (3), Blackthorn (100), Hawthorn (5), Aspen (10), Horse Chestnut (3); Grey Willow and Downy Willow (30).
    They are mostly native to Scotland but some are so slow growing that I will never see them as mature trees but you have to think ahead...
    Our land is stony. Mainly alluvial deposit. I found that a Mattock worked well but sometimes a Pickaxe was needed.
    You two put the rest of us to shame... Well done! :O)

    The place where I do my internship, they have an old planting bar. It is made of some low quality steel, it has a pretty wide 'blade' and a relativaly thin shaft. They told me that you should use it not by stamping it in to the dirt and than wiggle it back and forth, but to wiggle it while you're slowly pushing it deeper. This would first of all make sure that the shaft wouldn't bend, but it would also prevent you to make an houreglass shape. So you would get more space for the roots so that they wouldn't tangle up as quickly.

    After planting several thousand trees I would say using the dibble is my favorite. Make sure when you are sealing the tree in that you pull it back towards you. You need to make sure you remove the air pocket in the bottom of the hole or your roots will just rot away.

    Cody, the planting bar will probably work best. I have one myself and just planting over 100 trees successfully. Going through sod is going to be tough. The biggest concern with planting seedlings is keeping the roots from drying out. Some folks place wet moss or a wet sponge in their planting bags to keep the roots moist. Keep the trees out of direct sun and have fun. The roots should always be straight, never (J root) the roots. It will be a workout!

    I just thought of something, when you push the Dibble bar into the ground don't start straight up and down, start at an angle, that is with the handle towards your body, push in then push the handle away from yourself to make your hole, it's easier on your body to do it this way. When you close the hole put the dibble bar in about 2" away from the hole, straight up and down, then pull the handle towards yourself to close the bottom of the hole first, then push it away to close the top of the hole, and finally the heel stomp to close the second hole.
    If you are doing a crew it is easier to have one person on the dibble bar and a second person placing the seedlings. Also a 5 gallon bucket with some muddy water in it is good for the seedlings if you guys are not going at high speed, the bags are good when you want to pack a lot of seedlings and your are walking over a lot of not great ground, but you have to work fast or they will dry out.
    Should be a good day that the homestead.

    I'm not sure about the states, but up here in Canada there are summer jobs planting trees for the forest companies. Its a crazy job and planters are expected to plant at least 2000 trees for your average day. Good planters can average over 4000 a day. It is one of the most lucrative summer jobs for students if you can handle it.

    I like the way the spade worked in the rocky ground. Over here on the west side, in our ground the planting shovel works best. A lot of clay soils here with not so many rocks. Is that nursery part of the IFTA? That is where we get ours, only the stock of course, is for the northern Oregon coastal region.

    Nothing is faster than the hoedad, leave it in the hole, insert tree, then remove the hoe. smash with boot... The adzes are to clear the area around the seedling, and building a dirt ring for water.... not for plating the tree. They make augers for chainsaws for Mrs Wrangerstar.
    I would take a gallon or two of water out to each tree too if the ground isn't wet.

    Cody, how far do you space the seedlings from each other when planting? Do you plant them relatively close together now, hoping they survive and then thin them out way in the future? Finally, where is your "Fiskars" tree planting auger with its automatic fertilizer and pest deterrent injection system?

    • @davidpowell5504
      @davidpowell5504 9 лет назад

      Judy, Most of the spacing on the coast of Washington is around 9 to 11 foot grid patterns. Of course, this is roughly measured by the planters pacing off by steps or even sight. I have been planting trees as a hobby for a number of years. I have found that planting the trees closer together is a good idea. As stated, one can always thin them out later. It is amazing what can happen to the trees such as rodents, deer, soil conditions, too much water or lack of water, thick sod, or weeds, that will take out a number of trees. This year, I planted around 150 trees and spaced them tighter than needed. I would much rather thin, than have wasted space. The most important thing to consider about planting trees is to match the tree to the soil and climate. It seems everyone wants to plant Douglas fir. Find out what the native trees were in the planting plot and then carefully check the soil and surrounding vegetation. Yes, Douglas fir are valuable, but if they don't grow well, they won't be of value to you. I substitute lower quality trees all the time, because they will thrive and grow extremely well in a particular plot. For example, I planted Grand fir in a wet, flat, field with poor drainage. The Grand fir grow very well and the Douglas fir struggle.

The reason I ask is that you reminded me of one of my favourite all time movies "Big Wednesday" when Gary Busy's character says to a young bloke, "That's no ho dad, squid lips that's Matt Johnson" or words to that effect . All these years I wondered what a "Ho dad" was. Sorry I'm from Oz got no idea when it comes to U.S. English and especially U.S. slang.

  • @E.lectricityNorth
    @E.lectricityNorth 9 лет назад

    I was thinking about the various actions of the planting tools, and I couldn't help wondering if the only viable method was the blade method--IE using the various blades to open a clean cut in the soil so to speak. Would it be viable instead to have a small diameter circular hole (just slightly larger than the root bulb), and simply drop the seedling in and leave the hole to fill in naturally as the soil relaxes back into place, while leaving a very small initial space for the roots to expand into and for spring melt water to flow into?
    I'm sure the loaned out forestry tools have been thoroughly tested and determined to be the most suitable, but my thought was, could you simply use a heavy steel bar, something along the lines of a 60" or 72" digging/pry bar? Those things are heavy enough that you can almost just drop them into soft moist ground, without any extra force. If needed, you could get all the torque you want to widen up the hole a little bit, since they are so long and heavy and straight. You would have lots of control as well if you held it with two hands and drove it straight down. To widen the hole, you could just twist it around in a very small circular motion once it's in. Good workout as well carrying around a 20 pound bar all day.
    I'm not so sure it would be as easy to "seal up" the hole again afterwards using the circular hole since you would not be able to push it closed again with your foot, like you can do with the straight cuts that the other tools provide. Just thinking out loud. I may try it with mine tomorrow to see how it works out.

    where do you find out about local places like this? I'd like to get some similar help with replanting at my place...

    That poor ground. You're poking so many holes in it. I can hear it screaming out in pain. First you're notching tree branches and now poking holes in the ground.
    ok....I couldn't resist :-)
