Coming back and seeing Jack as a little kid and you guys working on your previous property made me realize the time that has passed. Crazy to think that he's now a young man, you guys have moved and you have your baby girl in just these few short years. These types of videos make me happy that I found the channel.

I love these videos, it brings a feeling of warmth into my heart. I'm a paramedic living in London just now, day in day out I deal with violence, vehicle collisions and the deceased. I love my job buy your heart gets colder as the days go on. Coming here and seeing these videos reminds me of home (Scottish Highlands),things like creeks and streams i've not seen in months. Not being able to see people as far as the eye can roam. Working with mother nature. Hearing quotes from the Bible. Fathers teaching there kids survival and skills. All my stress washes away when watching your videos. I can't wait till my stationing is up and i get to go home. Thank You Cody, Mrs Wranglerstar and Jack.

I've been watching your channel for a long time and this video, start to finish, was one of the most enjoyable ones ever. When I watch a video like this, I see what real wildlife stewardship looks like, I see how a father raises a son and honours his wife, and I can just watch without feeling like I'm being led through a big production. I think this type of honest down-to-earth content is what drew me to your channel in the first place.
PS: Keep the "gentleman" segments going for a while. You are right, we all need a reminder now and then.

I remember as a early teenager damming up a irrigation creek between fields where it came to a wye from a "waterfall" in Michigan where I am from. Made a great little swimming hole for the summer. Amazing how mast some water can collect. I watch your channel because like you I consider myself a doer, or a maker. Not just someone who watches and thinks its cool that all this stuff can be done. And believe me, working in what I do and the fact that there are so many places that require desalination facilities to get enough fresh water for the over populated coastal regions, you are right that it is a commodity to be concerned with. Keep on Making!

I will thank you Cody for twisting my mind a bit as of late. first the used motor oil impregnation video and burning house. one of the biggest reasons i love to watch your videos is because i feel like i am learning and your analogies is some of the best. i remember when i was about 14 and starting to get into moped's and scooters i wanted to buy a Honda sfx because ive heard about it's reliability but the problem was that the engine was so reliable that they could not sell any spare part's so they totally stopped making them. this sfx thing got me into the whole planned obsollecence thing and you for me is one of the flagship's in the fight against it. Thanks !

Beavers are hugely abundant in my area and in the driest summers there is always water in the bush. Beavers build dams triggered by the sound of running water, they instinctively go to the water flowing sound and build their dam in that location. The biggest down side of beavers is the ponds make for more mosquitoes and without natural predators they can become over populated. I would say you have a long way to go for that problem but keep in mind you need all elements of nature to keep it in check. One day the coyote and wolf may be your friend. Also plant poplar trees, aspens, birch and willow. A beaver's favourite menu.

    • @baitammo4652

John Elliot One man could not plant enough trees to feed one beaver.

    • @johnelliot2561
      @johnelliot2561 9 лет назад +1

you are correct. They do need a few trees. I suppose if you started the process by planting the trees they like and let them reproduce along the creek eventually there would be enough to support a beaver or two. The trees they like are faster growing trees.

To speed up the creation of your riparian habitat and make it beaver friendly planting native willows will help. Harvest them before the buds break in the spring. Cut them into pencil length sections and push them into the moist soil. Many will take root and survive.

Hi Cody. Great video. We live in an agricultural area, and flooding is a problem. Arguably, this is in large part down to the way agricultural land has been managed. Great to see new ideas, ref dams and water management.
You finished by talking about environmentalism, consumerism and consumption. I'm currently finishing a Master's degree in International Political Economy: one of the modules was Critical Environmental Studies. Corporations do this thing called 'greenwashing' where they pretend to be eco-friendly to sell us more products. As consumers we buy the eco-products, so we can continue consuming, while at the same feeling less guilty, because we are being 'green'. What we need to do is consume less, and maintaining/repairing old vehicles, household appliances, etc plays an important part in reducing our consumption. Many modern products are sold with planned obsolescence built-in.
You might like this video about cultural capitalism, which mentions Starbucks and environmental consumers. ruclips.net/video/GRvRm19UKdA/видео.html

Love the thought of reintroducing beaver back into the environment. Love the thought of increasing wet lands where there are none now, but were 100 years ago. Love the fact that you are working together as a family to take on this project.
I appreciate the comments at the end of the video about new cars vs old. I makes me feel better about driving a 13 year old truck with 190,000+ miles. I just put a set of 50,000 mile tires on it. Not thinking of getting rid of it any time soon. Also, new vs old, I think that new cars and trucks have so much tech stuff on them that we sometimes forget how to use are brains. What would happen to people if one day all of this just stopped and no longer existed.
    Best Regards
    Dave

You have all those slash piles you made. Something you might consider is placing some logs in the stream. Not tons of them but a few. This will help to slow the stream energy and reduce erosion as well. Also beavers can be a great thing. They build riparian areas but they can also cause more damage than you want. It depends on your goals for your property and the stream itself.

Just wanted to say thank you for all the videos. I have a bunch of my Grandfather and Great Grandfathers tools which I have enjoyed restoring and using as well. I also just built a dam yesterday in order to stock up enough water for a ram pump, which I will use for my food forest. I am curious if you plan on putting in fruit trees also? We have the same theory of keeping water on the landscape as long as possible. And use the older well built tools and cars and take care of them. We own a 93 ford with a 7.3L diesel and a 82 VW Rabbit diesel. One is a little more eco then the other but its paid for. Lol
You and a few others have inspired me to put our story on youtube as well. Thank you for sharing what you are passionate about.

I built a dam as a kid in the early 80's. It made a huge lake, a few 100 ft on a side. In the 90's it became a wetland and in the early 2000's it became a park. The city improved the dam, and its now all packed sod with grass and trees growing in it. Its in Oklahoma near a latke called Thunderbird near Moore and Norman.

Its always been maintained and parts fixed, waxing, washing, and polishing have preserved the paint and clear coat in the boiling desert sun (being original coat and not even lifting from the truck). Another good rant Cody. You're right, it's all a sales pitch to motivate people to buy their products. Long before the green movement there were earth conscious people that planted their own gardens and recycled things. We made our things last and last rather than buying new at the first sign of problems. I know for many that commute long distance that a newer car has a good enough gas mileage improvement to make it worth while. I only drive a few miles a day, so it is cheaper for me to keep the old ones going. The old ones were not built with as much of a throw away mentality and parts are cheaper too. They also tend to be easier to work on. My vehicles range between 30-40 years old and still going strong. If you think about it we don't scrap our houses every few years, we maintain them, why wouldn't we use the same mentality for our other things. It never made sense to me.

I have not had to many in my 62 1/2 years because I will run them until they are completely worn out. All my cars and trucks were sold to junk yards except one that was lost due to an accident. I always buy used older vehicles because I can't see paying those high personal property taxes. But with that being said, they are always kept in good mechanical order, and when that's not possible, off to the junk yard. That's my ranting for now. Take care
