Please note that ballistics gelatin or ballistics gel (two different substances) is not 1 to 1 analogous to a human. Ballistics gelatin or ballistics gel is mainly used (if calibrated and at a specific temperature) to provide a repeatable test medium for research. The FBI recommends that the projectiles be able to penetrate 16 - 20 inches in ballistics gelatin to perform adequately in a human torso. The gelatin will allow greater penetration than a human body will by about 105% to 110%. Additionally, the test medium does not adequately imitate skin, bone, organs or other tissues and any clothing worn will have an effect as well. The recommendations made by the FBI addresses the shortcomings in the test medium when testing the performance of ammunition. The FBI standard is based on a specific and repeatable test medium and testing conditions which allow for useful testing and evaluation of the performance of various projectiles which allows us to compare them accurately. The FBI standard also allows for independent verification of the results by others. The Ballistic torsos used in this video does address some of the short comings of a standard block of ballistics gelatin or ballistics gel alone. The torsos used still lack skin and clothing and we do not know if they were calibrated, what temp they are at during filming, how old they are and other factors, so your mileage may vary.

I was in law enforcement for about 27 years, and a detective specializing in violent crime (and other unpleasant stuff) for around half of that. I really like medical breakdowns like this. I used to discuss these things with medical examiners and ER physicians to learn all that I could. This helped me not only in investigating crimes, but in choosing ammo for carry (I was, later in my career, over firearms for my dept).
What I especially enjoyed about this video is the sharing of medical expertise, a bit of humor (a lot of humor from Garand Thumb, whose channel I enjoy too) and all with NO POLITICS. Well done, sir! Well done indeed!
Thanks for your comments. I always try to share the info in as neutral a way as possible. Usually, I can keep my political stance out of it. In this case, I am a gun owner, hence my interest in the topic.

What ammo did you ultimately choose to carry?
@@christopherpottie8474 9mm was 115gr +p+ Federal 9bple, .40 (our main duty caliber then) was Federal 165gr HST.
.223 was Federal 55gr boat tail jhp.
12 ga was Federal 00B Tactical with "Flite-Control" wads and their "low recoil" 1oz slugs.
I retired and they recently went back to 9mm as primary, issuing Federal 124 HST (a fine round and I approve .. for all that matters).
You're right about how devastated shotgun wounds are. At close range nothing survives. As a kid a home invader found this out after my dad blasted him after he kicked in the door. Ruled self defense killing...

Describing Garand Thumb as, "an unstoppable force moving in the direction of science" is the most unique and clever description of his channel I've ever heard. Have you ever thought of doing collaboration videos as a subject matter expert with any channels? Doesn't have to be gun channels, but would be cool IMO. (edited to correct spelling of Garand)
That would be cool to see. Dr Thumb once successfully dropped out of medical school, basically making him an ascended health master and esteemed colleague.

Hey Doc, I'm struggling to phrase this in such a way I can properly express myself, but I'd really like to thank you for your unbiased presentation of firearms. It's very refreshing to simply be able to watch a video regarding firearms that doesn't become politicized to one side or the other.

I think the more educational videos should be monetized and encouraged. Not so much this type, which I do find fascinating, but anything touching on safety and safe operation? It's valuable. We've got a ton of guns in the states, and there's quite a few people that weren't raised around them. Folks that don't have the safety rules and procedures ingrained from childhood can be more susceptible to mistakes.
This was always really apparent when we'd take a handful of buddies to the woods for some target practice. One of my friends and I would have to play range officer and really keep an eye on the guys that weren't raised on it.
I trained my nephew on safety for years before he ever got out to the range. I'd let him check out a gun of mine if he was curious, same procedure every time. Have him lay out the steps to ensure it was unloaded and safe, and I've never had to correct him on a live fire range. He doesn't have to think about it, it's just the way it's done for him. Best way to ensure that you'll never have to hear the words "I didn't think it was loaded"

An individual that breaks into my home, assaults me, or attempts to harm myself or others around me is not a patient until AFTER the threat to our lives has been neutralized. I was a Navy FMF Corpsman for 9 years. The same concepts applied in warfare as they would here in the states. If an enemy combatant attempts to do harm to me or those I am with, I am authorized to use deadly force, however, once deadly force has been applied and the threat is neutralized, if they are still living I then have an obligation to provide medical care, so long as that medical care does not needlessly compromise my safety or the safety of others.

Maybe next time, you could go into first aid as well! It is my opinion that a reasonable person should be just as prepared to fix holes in someone as they are to make the holes in the first place (of course, with a shotgun, there isn’t much that you can do in terms of first aid)

In most standing armies the degree to which you are trained to engage in combat, combined with the likelihood of combat, both directly correlate to the level of battlefield first aid you are expected to learn. I think the average citizen who wishes to carry outside the home, should honestly be required to learn at least basic trauma aid for the very same reasons (along with training with the firearm you intend to carry...like at all). If you're having to use your firearm, you're already acknowledging that things have gone very wrong, so it's only logical that you be able to render aid to bystanders, being that you're already at the scene of the incident. When it comes to trauma wounds that aren't deadly outright, the odds of survival directly correlate to the length of time between initial wounding, and initial treatment. Now of course this is all being done after the danger has passed, at least in your vicinity. First rule of treating a battlefield casualty is to not become a casualty yourself.
I'll also add that in a self defense case you still need to win over a courtroom, and nothing shows that you're not a bloodthirsty vigilante like attempting to render aid to your attacker (when conditions are deemed safe, of course).

Basic EMT stuff isn't all that complicated. It could/should be taught to highschoolers. We fuciing train grunts to do CLS, and that's only a week long course lol. I'm sure highschoolers could pick it up easy enough in a quarter.

I was expecting this video being a generic "reaction" video. But you actually delivered real informative input, with solid editing too. This was a surprisingly good video.

I really appreciate that there is a medical professional willing to break down ballistics without inserting their politics and keeping the video purely educational and scientific. These breakdowns will help when having to either aid myself or render aid to others in defensive situations as well as select an appropriate means for protection.

Thanks! Lots of people have been telling me to pronounce his name properly. I had to send a few of them the video explaining how to say it. I am a reservist gun owner so I don’t have a problem with them. I want to present the information in a neutral manner so that I can educate people. I don’t want to cloud the info with my own opinions and unfortunately I think that many in my profession let their emotions rule their decisions when it comes to firearms.

As a european im just shocked how normally people shoot around weapons of this caliber which can cause these devastating lethal injuries. i have no opinion of the monetization thing im just shocked. how can you live in peace if people in the streets could point such a thing at you??
@@dudenukem1594 My brother showed me a gun the other day but I wasn't nervous of him owning a weapon that could kill me because I don't do anything to bother him. Criminals will do whatever, gun, knife, fist, it doesn't matter as they will hurt you if they want to. But most regular won't harm you unless you give them a reason to.
@@dudenukem1594 That's the entire point, anyone can be armed so therefore criminals, whether private individuals or governmental, should think twice before harming or trampling on the rights of anyone else. Words on a sign do nothing to those who do not abide by the law and punishment after the fact does not save the dead or keep people free.
Additionally the statistics of gun crime are heavily manipulated by anti-gun organizations and politicians as a scare tactic, many more are killed by far more mundane things, such as car crashes, and the majority of the common "40,000 deaths per year" thrown around are actually suicides which does not speak to guns being the issue but rather mental health, something banning guns will never fix. Additionally many "mass shootings" are not such and only encorporate 1-3 deaths (and even the mass shooting with the largest body count still has 3x less deaths than when a man rented a moving truck and proceeded to run people over) and in some particularly egregious manipulations will include false calls of shootings to police to bolster the numbers, a tactic favored towards the beginning of years to over inflate the early numbers and make current events appear worse than they are.
All of that is to say that unless you are actively going around attempting to rob, fight, oppress, etc the people of America or intentionally visit the parts of major cities that have high crime rates (which are where the majority of Anti-Gun legislation is in place I might add which only further proves its ineffectiveness) than you are extremely unlikely to even have one pointed at you let alone actually used.
And before Europe or Canada are used as "examples of good gun control" I'd also like to point out that crime rates across Europe, in some areas more than other, are still high and frankly I'd prefer the right to defend myself with a firearm than hope that I don't run into someone with a knife, bomb, acid, *illegally owned firearm*, or any other weapon with no options but to surrender myself and hope they do not still kill me anyways (which does happen and there is even video footage from CCTV of it happening).
I hope this leads you to further research into the world of firearms and perhaps even giving handling them a chance one day but I also understand if you do not, it is your choice after all, but I simply ask you do not deny others the right to defend themselves and their loved ones with the most effective tools available, after all when seconds matter the police are only minutes away.

He did correct himself with text on screen. When he said 7 feet he overlayed a correction on screen that said "yards".

Its important to note that when Garand is measuring distance, it's in YARDS not "feet" as this guy said. We measure shooting distance in yards. (3ft=1yd). Garands first shot was at 7yds(21ft).
Yeah and for those metic system fans; a meter is “slightly” larger than a yard by about a tenth: 1m ~ 1.1yd

He didn't exactly understand the firearm stuff. His understanding of the way the wad works was factually incorrect. It doesn't keep everything together until the moment of impact, it's not supposed to - that would defeat the purpose of the spread effect of shotgun BBs. It keeps everything together and sealed from the gunpowder explosion while in the barrel, but separation begins as soon as they exit the barrel.

Yep, this is what the internet is great for. Useful information and knowledge can quickly clump together and grow larger. Problem is, it also facilitates the growth of non-useful or harmful information too ;-) But yeah, this is good content. There are quite a few of these channels like Garand Thumb doing these sort of light-hearted but actually quite useful practical analysis of what various firearms do with human body facsimiles. It's interesting. They're trying to get hits. They buy or get donated the torsos and they do the 'science' for entertainment.
I love the extra layer that Dr Chris Raynor has added to this process. Very informative, while remaining 100% entertaining.

Every 9mm gunshot wound has a potential for complications leading to death. The shotgun just adds 8 additional sets of complications to manage. It's like trying to perform surgery on 8 patients at once. But from a tactical standpoint, we are operating under the "Multiplication Law," where, rather than trying to Shoot an opponent 8 times in succession and then moving onto engaging a second target, we can shoot 8 targets, raising number of simultaneous complications to 64 hereby overwhelming the surgeon and driving him into alcoholism.
Yeah, or they go straight to the coroner and the surgeon doesn't have to mess with it.🤷♂
The long game target isn't the gunshot victim in this, it's the resulting effects on the medical team to inflict mental casualties within the next 5-10 years. For this I recommend 3" 00 Buck.

Still, guns bad though. Let's get this straight - I'm not saying they're not cool. Guns are cool as heck and playing with them is great fun in video games, so they're probably even more viscerally exciting in real life.
However, easy access to something that can deal this kind of damage, at distance, over the course of a fraction of a second, with comparatively minimal training or skill required, is a recipe for disaster.
Advocating for gun rights is similar to advocating for untrained common people piloting commercial jet liners - except with a much, much lower financial barrier for entry and much, much higher ease of operation.
I could give you the numbers to back up my claims, but it's likely you've already seen them and decided to ignore the truth that while yes, guns are super cool, regular people should really not be allowed anywhere near the trigger. You know, like jets.
@@Zappygunshot The problem is that anyone can use anything to kill people. By your logic, we shouldn’t trust people with hammers and knives. The difference is that a 70 year old grandma with a knife versus a 22 year old man with a knife will lose every time. A grandma with a glock 19 versus a 22 year old with a glock 19 has somewhat of a chance. There’s also the fact that if a government becomes tyrannical, it is the civic duty of the people to dismantle it and start anew. Hard to do that without guns.
@@Zappygunshot guns are neutral at best. 2nd amendment is made to protect people from tyrannical governments or people with vicious intent. Someone who isn't physically capable against the intruder or attacker should have as much leverage against the threat whatever it may be. Tools like this aren't only meant to protect people from people. There's animals that will stop at nothing to attack the person. I'd rather have a semi automatic or fully autoatic weapon rather than a sword, bow, or bolt/lever action as advanced as they are now to defend people I love against anything that means to do us harm.

When I took my carry license class years ago one of the women made the comment, "I don't want to kill anyone." The instructor quoted her this information. With quick medical treatment, the survival rate from being shot with a handgun is 70%. From a rifle, 35%. From a shotgun... 10%. Or as Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch put it. A handgun bullet will go in the body. A rifle round will go in and come out the other side. With the right load at the right distance, a shotgun will remove a chunk of shit and put it on the floor. Yes, Virginia, you need to aim with a shotgun. Appreciate you taking the time to make an informative and entertaining video.

This is extremely helpful harm reduction and informational content, the idea this would be demonized by its platform is pathetic. All accurate information with not just anecdotal evidence but also years of real ballistics and trajectory. This is how people should learn about different types of tools with accurate demonstration.

Small correction. The distances GT is shooting at are measured in yards, rather than feet. The first shot at 7 yards is 21 feet, then at 10 yards, 30 feet, with the final shot being at 25 yards, or, 75 feet. Excellent analysis. Really hammers home the devastating power of these weapons.
Shows you why the Germans were so pissed at Americans using shotguns in World War I. They were nicknamed the "trench sweepers" for a reason.

With your knowledge of firearms, ammunition and ballistics you must have had some early experience as a medic or corpsman. As a fan of Garand Thumb, this was really cool to see, and was an absolutely great breakdown with good editing.
What a fantastic analysis. As someone who's been shooting for almost a decade I can count on one hand the number of times I've heard such a great medical breakdown. (ps. I think using grains as a measurement is dumb and get it confused all the time as well).
Getting to the end of this video.. This is top notch stuff. Incredibly competent breakdown of anatomic effects of buckshot and slug specific trauma. Honestly, I loved this as much as, if not more than the original Garand Thumb video.

Something to keep in mind: shooting 00 Buckshot basically means you're firing out 8x (traditionally, sometimes 9) .33" sized projectiles at 1,300 feet per second or thereabouts. At the same time. While the dimensions (and velocities) aren't the same, the kinetic energy of each and every pellet is almost on par with .380 Auto. Not exactly impressive... but then again most people that don't think .380 Auto is that effective also aren't shooting 8 or more rounds at the same time. And at nearly 1,300 fps? You're going to get some nasty deformation with lead shot. 8 times or more at once, potentially.

He got a lot wrong. His understanding of the way the wad works was factually incorrect. It doesn't keep everything together until the moment of impact, it's not supposed to - that would defeat the purpose of the spread effect of shotgun BBs. It keeps everything together and sealed from the gunpowder explosion while in the barrel, but separation begins as soon as they exit the barrel.

Dr. Raynor, I am not a doc but a retired nurse who got my start as a female hospital corpsman in the Navy. I did not see combat but am thinking that your vids would be excellent training material for hospital corpsman in combat. Excellent training for anyone actually. Love it and thank you!
I was a Marine rifleman in Viet Nam & out in the jungle & rice paddies (aka "The Bush") we had assigned to us one navy "Corpsman" per platoon that we referred to as 'Doc'.
I know that was a long time ago & things change, but I'm having trouble thinking of a scenario where a "hospital corpsman" especially a female, would be 'in combat', other than on a ship that was attacked. Please clarify.

Anyway, was just stating that the Navy was where I got my first medical training. My best friend of 40 years who I knew before I joined the Navy is a Marine. Once a Marine. always a Marine. He was on a ship during Vietnam. He retired from the Corp and had a second career at the Post Office that he retired from also. The best job of my life was when I had my own clinic at WTBN, Quantico and my friend was the captain of the Rifle Team. He let me shoot at the range. I highly respect Marines because their training is the toughest of all the branches. I salute you for your hard work in Vietnam and hope you are doing well. God Bless you.

One of my buddies from the Infantry re-upd as an Army Doc (SOCOM) . They sent him to inner city ERs to practice on gunshot wounds.
@@jackwalker9492 that's actually insane when you think about it, outside the US is just not common to send military medical personnel to civilian ER and medical centers to get first hand gunshot wound experience.
I'm a paramedic and a firearms instructor. I love seeing garand thumb videos broken down via medicine. I would love to see more of his videos broken down like this.

One thing to keep in mind about ballistic gel tests especially with blocks is that they are not a 1:1 analogy for human flesh. But they are close enough to get an idea of what ballistics do a body and testing on a common medium gives better test results.
And the only way to get an exact idea of what a round does to a human body, is to use a human body. I’d advise against that, cause that tends to bring a looot of questions you probably don’t want to answer. And it kind of gives some people a bad case of projectile vomit.
@@R0gueM I think testing on livestock such as pigs would likely be the closest non human subject. Still unethical for general training but useful for battlefield medics.

I was a Navy corpsman (O.R. tech.) with a surgical team in Vietnam 68-69. I think your videos are very educational and memory provoking in a good way for me. Even now at 75 I miss the high energy and excitement of the OR treating all types of traumatic injury. I was able to assist in ways never possible in civilian life. Thank you for the education.

As an avid firearms enthusiast, I am pretty well aware that the shotgun rounds are particularly deadly. With that being said, it is very fascinating to see what a medical breakdown of this sort of trauma looks like.

Always nice to see a life-taker process breakdown by a life-saver tasked with undoing the damage. Terminal ballistics is by definition a controversial topic, and not many MDs are willing to wade in and get dirty in the name of science. Well done, Doc.
Dude…literally HUNDREDS of doctors around the world are studying wound ballistics of various types for militaries and medical associations daily! Your statement of “not many” is incredibly short sighted. In fact, I know for a certainty that Hornady employs an MD full time in their wound ballistics laboratory for new and upcoming shells they design. They also use him as a specialist in legal defenses in civil court. I knew him personally. Your statement is WAYYYYY off base.

Fyi, brother and father of MDs, uncle to a DO. They're all gun guys, but his statement is fairly accurate from my personal observation.
I saw a Iraqi survive a 30 mm round to his abdomen but the surgeons said most of his organs were missed being they were way higher then they should be. No idea if he survived later as I was transported to Landstuhl Army Hospital Germany. Dude had a hole bigger then a softball in him.

I have heard of a handful of people that should have died as a result of a gunshot wound under normal circumstances but due to "situs inversus" their organs were not quite where they are normally (organs flipped from right to left). That being said, it is rare and I doubt it matters in most cases, especially concerning the video's content.

Still new here. I just found your Astartes videos a day or so ago and now this video which covers one of the greatest firearms channels around. I love the breakdown of the trauma and would like to see more like this. It'd be refreshing to hear your side of things instead of the typical stuff we in the firearms community get. Typically it all revolves around inflicting a blood pressure loss as fast as possible to render the target unable to fight. It would be cool to hear some of the WHY when talking about specific injuries and the downstream results. A lot of science and consulting work has gone into the industry at different points in the past but it would be cool to hear a refresher from someone who's a modern professional using updated tools and testing.
