This magnificent palace in Istanbul was once home to all the Ottoman sultans until the reign of Abdulmecid I (1839-1860). The complex served as a royal residence and a setting for various state occasions and royal entertainment.

Frederick the Great of Prussia was gifted a complete Turkish band by the Ottoman Sultan. This suggests that all the men were slaves as indeed were the janissaries. I can't see a free born Turk with a wife and family volunteering for military service if, at the whim of your commander in chief, you are permanently seconded to a foreign power.
