      Haha mine caught on fire just yesterday. I saw the whole thing and quickly pulled power plug when I saw a ball of yellow light inside my case 😱. It scared the hell out of me. Luckily SSD was ok. It has caught on fire 🔥 before killing DVD drive that I never used lol 🤣. Pretty sure they were the same cheap Chinese ones. I am gonna power SSD directly now.

      Many data center drives don't work without them with a normal power supply. Alternatively you can also tape over pin #3 on the SATA power connector.

    Says Molex connectors have a lot of drawbacks, including arching that can melt the housing. Shows a molten SATA connector. Continues to say that the arching happens on the SATA end because the SATA lanes are closer together. Sounds to me that Molex isn't the issue, it's poor manufacturing on the SATA side of the cable, because SATA tolerances are much tighter. A cheap adapter probably doesn't have those SATA connections insulated enough from each other, which is causing the arching. Just get a Molex to SATA adapter from a reputable brand and you're probably fine.

    Did I hear you correctly? They have Capacitors that kill the wire instead of the device connected to the adaptor? I'm no electronic engineers, but I fail to see how a capacitor would contribute to protecting an electronic circuit. Surely you mean Fuse (Which is just a Resistor designed to fail before the rest of the circuit).

    • @BuzStringer
      @BuzStringer  5 лет назад +12

      Yes, I got that sentence a bit jumbled, each rail has its own capacitor to ensure a smooth flow of the correct voltage to the rail and it is also fused incase of a short. Well spotted.

    I had a dying ssd. So I took it out and plugged it into an external molex PSU with sata adaptor. Now the ssd is completely dead. But I still remain unconvinced it was the sata adaptor that did it. I have used these adaptors plenty of times in the past with no problems. I did have one burning occasion where the molex connector smoked, but the hard drive stayed fine. That molex was a moulded unit that was part of the power supply. So it wasn't an adaptor.

    I have used these several times. Never had any problems. You just need to make sure you have a proper connection. The problem is that these Molex Male apapters have the 4 pins loose, so you need to make sure they are connected properly. A good idea is to secure the molex/wire part with tape, so it stays proper connected.

    I'm planning on putting an SSD into my grandads PC, he has a 1tb HDD currently but the PC bootup time takes forever. My plan was to keep the HDD as it has lots of pictures and stuff on but get an SSD just for windows to speedup the startup time. Was going to get a 120gb as that's fine for just windows but when opening his PC to check it the PSU only has 2 of the cables that plugin to HDDs/SSDs and they're both occupied by the HDD & a disk drive so how else can I gain another connection for an SSD without the molex adapter?

    That may be true 2:05 about the amount of connections a SATA plug has vs the Molex, you see the wires going into the plugs themselves? The SATA plug has the same wires that the Molex plug has... Same Wires, different connectivity perimeters within plugs themselves. The Adapters are probably poorly made and why they would burn.

    My dads computer crom 2010-11 only used molex to sata addapter and hand no sata on the power supply. The hard drive had a molex connector but there was a sticker on it saying not to use the molex connector. I plugged in the more it's connected directly into the hard drive rather than using the adapter and the hard drive seems like it's span up perfectly fine and was readable and everything and worked perfectly fine.
    Now im wondering if i can use it in my current rig or not?
    Edit: I'm afraid to use a SATA power cable because I threw them all in the box together and when I grabbed one I grabbed one for the wrong power supply because they look identical and ended up frying three hard drives :( one of them was in SSD and it was so hot I literally jerked my hand away as if it where a stove or something.

    so much misinformation here... molex to sata fails at the female sata end only due to arcing the way you said it sounds like its the molex's female that fails on a "molex to sata adaptor"?? don't know how that works but ok....
    2nd problem... surprisingly older molex to sata adapters are the ones that are least likely to fail... its the newer and cheaper kinds that tends to fail... because of manufacturing tolerances and the way they are manufactured... those that are done by injection molding to the wires are out of the question immediately as the wires can move about during the injection process increasing the failure rate exponentially in each production batch of these adaptors...
    those that are made by clipping through or soldered to prongs for each pins are least likely to fail especially if they have the comb separators for the small prongs connectors placed properly so that in between each prongs there is no air for the connectors to arc to...
    molex was actually a very good idea for a connector... this is from a person who started build computers during sata connectors era... the only problem is the way the male and female metal contacts are designed that is flawed as they can move about inside the connectors and making it easier to damage on either end... the solution is kinda brain dead simple... just make it like our PSU connectors to our components each pin female and male has an individual housing that can protect the pins... but its too late to fix it since sata is much slimmer and we have designed most things to suit these sata connectors now.... and with sata power connectors, they can put stupid things such as shucking prevention detection with sata power connectors... yes this is a thing and if we used the brain dead simple 4 connector design, shucking prevention through the power pins would be impossible...

    • @FreakyDudeEx
      @FreakyDudeEx 2 года назад

      on top of all of this, sata to sata extensions are also still prone to this problem.... if the manufacturing tolerance is just as bad, it will burn itself... the problem of arcing exist due to bad sata connectors because their pins are designed so close to each other...

    • @BuzStringer
