Modding Guide: Inline SATA Connectors

- I made this guide to answer what is probably my most asked modding related question: "What are those connector things you used for your hard drives?" I then go on to do a quick little demo to thwart any possible confusion. I may do more of these modding guides if there's an interest so be sure to comment with anything else you would like to see.

Considering this is now a 10 year old video, the information in it is still amazingly useful, and you make the whole process appear very straightforward. Thanks for this!
Exactly! Even almost 12 years later! I'm building a machine that needs a single SATA power connector for the AIO and after watching this I realized I can use old cables to do what I need and not let a bunch of connectors hanging around.
Agreed ... there's newer videos on the subject, but this young man did excellent work with the camera shots, nice clear close ups of what's going on. Also no blah blah blah filler to fit the video into a Google algorithm length sweet-spot.
he help me alote
personally i would love to see more of these modding guides from you, i think that the projects you have shared with us on youtube are without a doubt some of the most amazing things I have seen anywhere
First of your videos I stumbled upon, these look great, looking forward to more of these. Subbed!
Awesome techniques! I never saw these before. They would make for a sharp looking setup! Thanks for showing us this dude!
Mind is blown! Thanks for the video. I love it! Keep em coming.
Thanks for this! I was actually looking for information on what to do if you have a SATA splitter cable where the connectors are upside down, but simply clamping some more connectors to the PSU cable sounds even better than using an splitter cable! I had no idea they were so easy to attach!
This is exactly what I was looking for fit my new PC build! Thanks!!
Ahhh man, this video is such a teaser! I was hoping for more of one of your amazing work log type vids. Although this video is helpful.
So helpful! will make my cable managment so much cleaner!
Dude, I'm from the future. We're living dark times ... Terminator was wrong - the machines started their takeover through sex toys and not weapons.
Jokes apart, thanks for the extremely helpful video that saved my weekend!
liked how you had closer views, makes the video amazingly easy to follow :D
Congrats on the job, dude. Sounds pretty cool.
weird, I was thinking the same question. Great vid man!
Great video man❤! Keep the good work up.
You are an awesome freak, Thanks. No problems, great comments. One new subscriber!
13 year old vid, ahead of the curve this lad
This is awesome! Thank you!
i always wondered how u did such clean wiring lol nice tutorial :)
hella awesome man. I think Ill do this. some time for my itx pc
Dude this is very helpful, thanks for sharing..
I have eight(8) 8tb ssds in a mounting bracket i got off etsy that spaces each of them only 7mm apart, and this worked absolutely perfect.
If anyone that sees this is wondering, this is the only method to connect this many drives to a single cable, since this makes the cable the bottleneck of available amps before meltdown, instead of the connectors being said bottleneck as by using splitters.
I would feel comfortable even putting 12 ssds on one cable with this method, so long as you're not writing to all of them at the same time 24/7.
Thanks for the idea and upload
Very helpful. Thanks!
@UnknownLobster Thank you. I was going to use them for SSDs. I found a SATA extension cable and I will use that to put the in-line connectors from a molex splitter on. Thank you for this video.
Thank you, I will have to try this.
Good job man!
You are a wizard!!!
dude you got mad skills! im trying to do something like the black dwarf...
Thank you so much for this! I've been wondering how you did that
I love you man You saved my ass tonight with this video.
+Default Name You werent the guy that was hanging from the 30th floor above me dangling by a sata cable were you!
>;o)
No but I some how stabbed may hand with a small screw driver as I rushed to reconnect my SATA cable. Shit was half way in my palm I almost fainted.
Useful video. Thank you very much, Lobster.
First: Great vids. Admire your skills and workshop :)
Second: You really don´t need to press the cable into the connector with a screwdriver.
Just apply all the cables in the first "gap" in the connector, then use the lid and press all the cables at the same time with a tool.
Dude. THANK YOU.
thank you :) i will definetly do this then ! :)
Thnx nice Vid was inspired to make one my self for 4 in 3 hdd rack
Thank you for sharing.
I used a saw to cut the excess wire that prevented the cap from fitting on.
great vid! thanks for this tutorial, was wondering how you did that.
i wonder what ever happened to this guy, he stopped posting 8 years ago, and his website isn't working anymore.... I hope he's ok because this video helped me build my sata connectors for my NAS cage
I just want to add that you can find Molex versions of these connectors, if you want to avoid having to crimp molex.
I know that buy the time of my comment molex is practically dead connection, but their are still some adapters for things that still make use of them.
thnx, good job man
nice vids man..
Great vid, Will could u do a video on how to fit a power cut off switch inline to multiple hard drives, at the front of the tower using a 5 wire modular connection from the psu,Iv not been able to buy 1 so i need to make it, and i'm sure this would be a popular Mod.Thanks in advance.Looking forward to it now your back.
Thanks for the inspiration. Im probably going to end up using the Frozen CPU EZ crimp connectors though. That way I can get white connectors and the end caps on the custom ones look a bit cleaner to me. Wont really be able to see them I guess its the principle.
@ASAWProductions it was used for old 3.5" floppy drives, some flash drives like CompactFlash
Great video, thanks for posting!
Also, which would you recommend- battery or outlet powered soldering irons?
funny u mentioned about these connectors from ebay cuz i just bought a couple of at dirt cheap from china. cool, bro.
I would love to see the tutorial of what you did to the Black Dwarf"s power supply to make it work.
Thanks for the video mate but I have a question..Have you tried to combined two cables into one connector? i.e a Y type splitter. So 2 cables in pairs into 1 of metal contacts to give me two female connectors (one at each end).
@bobbyt2012 you can sync the videos with either editing, its not locked specifically to one program, in WMM on XP I could do it easily with it
Helpful information! How do you connect the data lines?
Thanks for the video very usefull tip, but i got a question how many sata connectors you can put on one cable?
good idea
For anyone wanting just the connectors to save the time and hassle of popping off the caps on some adapters, check FrozenCPU and PerformancePC.
What is the appropriate gauge to use for SATA connectors? I've read that 18AWG is recommended, can you comment on this? What gauge were you using in the video?
Hi so is the 3.3v orange cable needed for the 3.5 hard drive to work properly or can I do without it?
I would love to see the painting process for your mods. I've built a couple custom cases with my buddies but they all look a bit cheap. The paint jobs on all of your projects look top notch. Do you paint them yourself or outsource?
does it matter if i use any of those black plug the first one that you show how to take apart for my sata hdd cause my seasonic 350w 80 plus bronze psu doesn't have those for the hdd it has those white one white big metal hole it has 4 so can i just cut those 4 wire and connect it to the black plug or not btw do i need the orange wire too or no please relay cause i really need to modded so i can use my gpu
Hi Thanks for this idea,
i used the converter cable with one side white connector & other side SATA connector. but the issue was when i turned system ON, the red cable on bothe the sides melted & white fumes started coming out.
Can you give me an idea whether the issue is with the HDD or with the connector?
I have an external HD I would like to adapt the cable ac dc to molex dc. So will be less one cable outside the computer. Could you do it?
Hi. Thanks for the video, good idea. Can you tell the kind of the connector? Where buy it? Thanks very much
@GLaDOSProductions if u google SATA pinouts you will find the sata activity out but only some hard drives use it, from memory its pin 11 on the sata power connector.
Do a search for "hardware port multiplier". It will get you a reasonable way to what you want but if you mean just by wiring some cables up etc, no. Computers are generally more complex than just "splitting cables" for things other than power.
The port multiplier will do a 5:1 setup and you can choose the raid mode. As a word of warning, raid 0 (make all drives look as 1 big drive) which would be nearest what you want would see you loose everything if you get any of the 5 drives die.
Same question !
I have an evga 1600w t2 power supply. How many hdds i can connect on a single 6 pin sata port using your method based on energy consumption the psu can handle?
do you feel you need to test the connectors with a multimeter afterwards?
Hi! How much sata connectors can I insert on the same four cables? Thanks a lot!
Molex is yellow-black-black-red, sata is yellow-black-red-black. If you're doing this, you'll need to swap red and the 2nd black.
@Jiraya12345
I know it wasn't directed at me, but battery powered soldering irons are great for quick one off jobs. They aren't powerful enough to do heavy soldering for very long. As far as outlet powered, I recommend a digital read solder station with adjustable temperature output. The reason for that, the plain 1 temperature irons you get for 5 bucks often get too hot and you go through too many tips or you get the item you're trying to solder too hot. Hope that helps.
wondering if you can mod the hard drive conector off a xbox 360 elite to a usb ?
Does it works with sleeved cables ? (handmade sleeved cable, 4mm sleeve).
Thanks
Thank you for this
Question, can i have 4 ssds and a fan controller in the same cable?
How do you sync the video from all three cameras?
This is really handy, I was looking to convert Molex to SATA power because for some stupid reason a lot of cheap Water cooling company still use Molex! >:(
Just let the damn connection die! :S
thanx 4 sharing nice vid.
would this be a RAID hard drive configuration?
Thats a good idea. but if you dont mind. actually buying this is very easy and cheap. but i dont refer buying, if i can do it i will try. but since you are the one whos capable i must strongly recommend to build a hand made, homemade 2.5 hdd sata enclosure buy using dead laptop hdd sata port, 5pin usb cable and from any other scrap wires and cable. so we can rely by recycling instead of disposing. and buying is not be more demand as option.
speak English.
pls
don t leave us
ok ... u have a job ... but remember you have a passion....
@UnknownLobster Oh, haha, that makes sense. What did you use?
how do you do the sata conectors? i´v used up all my sata on my motherboard. do you use a raid card, and if how did you fit it inside?
How did you do the RAID status LEDs for the Black Dwarf?
If someone for an example swapped out the two ground wires by mistake, would it hurt the hardware or it’s just ground wires and it will work just fine?
Shouldn't damage the hardware as they ulmitly connect to same ground point in the PSU anyway
It depends on the hard drives but you wouldn't want to be pulling to many amps through that cable even if the psu is capable of providing it.
What thickness cable would I need to buy If I want to make one from scratch?
do you have to worry about low voltage when connecting 5+ HD's?
@UnknowLobster How many in-line sata connectors can you use on one line?
hello, i would like make a inline sata cable for 6 HDD, Do you know if there is any risk?
thank you.
@bobbyt2012 yes but he edits them so it syncs correctly :P
1st thing how many HD can you have hoock up to one molex ? and 2nd what cams do you use ? thanks
@Jiraya12345
This is relatively cheap, but works well. Look up ZD Electronic Tools ZD-929C on google. Great for general use. Only problem I've found is I've had to replace a 1000uF power supply capacitor on them after about the 2nd or 3rd year of use. They use an underrated voltage cap, so that's just a warning if you do decide to use that. Otherwise, a Weller would be a good option. Like I said, the battery is great for quicky jobs here and there, but full blown projects, go for the station.
If I have not another power supply which type of wire i've to use. Are particular wire a simple electric wire, diameter.
Thank you
When you use your own wire, what gauge is it?
How do you add them all together so that it leads out with 1 sata to plug into pc so the computer thinks its just 1 big Hard Drive
damn I did this to an older psu but it didn't fit the motherboard
i faced an issue in an HP desktop were we have a satat power wire with 4 pin connector similare to ones of a cpu ( 4pin in one side and sata power in the oposite side )coming from motherboard and he has one stat power connectore they ask me to add more hard drive but with this cabel i can only instal one; i found an edentical and not 100% matching cabel with 4 sata power connector .... the problem was the 4 pin connector in the head he is not correctly matching the orriginal one
the soloution
i detached all 4 terminals from both cabel and change 4 pin head connector from one to the other. the cabel work and i instal hdd+ssd in one machine
If my PSU already has a sata power cable could I just add these in between the ones already on the cable??
i have 5 wire on mine end and when i put it on my cd drive the cable is to short to reach on to my harddrive help
@DaMirrorLink So that makes it apple editing?
@deathventure
Don't care, your advice was useful too. I'd been wondering whether or not I should buy a battery powered one (my dad had always told me that they were crap and I shouldn't bother with them).
Thank a lot|
