Adding SATA Cables to old PC Power Supplies

  • This video is a "how to" add SATA cables to old PC power supplies that have no SATA cables. Prior to 2005, all PC disc drives and optical drives were powered with "Molex" 4 pin power connectors. Therefor power supplies only provided Molex connectors. After 2005 there was a switch to the new SATA standard. Many PC power supplies from the mid 2000's will have 0 or 1 cables with SATA connectors, but with several cables with obsolete Molex connectors. In this video, I transplant SATA cables into two old power supplies. In the first case, I add the SATA cable to power supply by soldering all five lines to the power supply board. In the second case, I cut off one of the Molex cables and solder the SATA cable on to the stubs of the cut lines.

    Thanks for sharing! I have been looking for something like this for a little while. My plan is to refurbish my old power supply to power a couple of sata boards for providing distributed power to a collection of single board computers in a cluster arrangement. This will certainly reduce the cable nightmare that I was facing.

    Do you happen to know which components might utilize a 3.3 v lead? Because not adding that part to the converted PSU connectors is about 90% less work actually.

      Very few peripheral use the 3.3 V line. I do not have a list. You can probably get away without it. If you encounter a device which requires it, you can always add the 3.3 volt line.

    don't understand why desolder / solder can't I just cut wires strip ends and (matching them of course) splice them together

      Yes, you can splice the wires. How ever, a solder connection is stronger and safer.

    I have an 850w dell power supply that I wanted to use for my gaming pc but the connectors for the cpu isn’t there I only have the 24pin for the motherboard. And I have a 6pin but that won’t work. Any solutions?

      You did not specify how many pins are used. Most PC motherboards have a 4 pin CPU power connector connector. Many later boards have a 8 pin. There are adapters you can buy that will use a peripheral power connector to power the CPU.

      @@c.davidgraves4848 the motherboard requires a 4pin but all I have is two 6pin and a 24pin

      That has been proven to be false, only the ones with molten plastic casing are the faulty ones
