Not quite relevant to this video but I finally actually looked up what a Toyota Century is and now can understand why Pete was nuts enough to import one. In my head I just pictured it as some sort of generic Toyota Taxi from the 80s. Now I know it's a very high end Saloon car with a lot of thought and care put into it's design 😃
The “Happy Christmas” intro from Pete is a nod to John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas/War is Over” where John and Yoko whisper something similar before the opening bars of the song. That’s Natsuki being solid gold yet again.
Yeah the Sapporo snow festival was in Yakuza 5 (they made an in-game map out of susukino and called it tsukimino) and it really made me want to see the real thing
The fertility rate is mostly a dense urban area problem; people in Tokyo, Chiba, Osaka, Kyoto are not having kids. It is significantly higher in Kyushu but still below the replacement rate. Within Kyushu there are also stark differences in the fertility rate between people in towns and cities, and people who live in wards (densely populated cities). There is no educational difference or employment status difference between woman with high fertility and low fertility. Living in a dense urban area is a great predictor of fertility, except within certain sub-groups such as Japanese people who had siblings and Japanese woman married to a foreign nationals.
Given how tolerated smoking had been in the past (like finding restaurants that had a small non-smoking section that had no barriers to prevent such things), I was shocked to find that people were pretty respectful about it. The culture really started changing around smoking probably in the late 2010s, and I saw people giving up on public smoking quite quickly and without incident. Even when smoking happened, a lot of people vaped so it wasn't as bad, but even ordinary cigarettes didn't seem to be as bad to be around as they are in Canada.
11:40 For the smoking question: There are designated areas (in the cities anyway) where people can smoke. They don’t walk around smoking anywhere. Restaurants that allow smoking usually have a sign on the window letting people know.
These in studio podcasts look more cozy than the 9000km distance video calls lol, btw are there any plans for another journey across japan? thanks for the podcast as always!
It's not like people are genetically incapable of having children. There are population declines and increases throughout human history, but the single biggest factors for population decline have always been war, disease and natural disasters. Currently the issues with the decline is mostly due to how difficult it is to sustain a family in the modern world with inflation as high as it has been for a while now (was pretty bad before the pandemic but post pandemic made it even worse). Also it's difficult in most countries to buy a house, that leads to less security, nobody wants to have a kid then find out they'll be homeless within a few months because their landlord says so. There is also the issue of the rise in popularity of redpillers/incels/MGTOW's across the world men are being taught to be more unpleasant and controlling to women, which in turns makes women want to date them less, which in turn leads to a decrease in population. There are soooo many different factors though for the population decline, but it won't stay constant forever.
I've seen plenty of mohawks in Japan. For someone who has been in Japan for a while now, it doesn't seem like you see much of Japan except for the generic stuff.
It's the end of the legacy of WW2 when large families and people were needed to re populate and regenerate Japan's manufacturing and industry. It will all balance out once the older generation passes away and will no longer require the resources or people to look after and care for them and they will be allocated elsewhere.
Worse, they will tell you to click on all the bikes, and then it will consider bicycles and mopes to be "bikes" as well, and don't even get me started on the traffic lights
I'm not fussed about this whole "collapsing birthrate" nonsense. The world's population has been ballooning to unsustainable levels for a century now, and it only ever benefits the top 0.001%. Let things calm down to more sustainable levels. Especially if AI is going to make a ton of roles redundant anyway.
Nature always finds a balance. When there’s too much people we naturally want to make less babies. When there’s _really_ not enough people then we will make more babies. There’s no possible case where human just stop procreating until we go extinct.
There are millions of weebs, people on the autism spectrum, and people who prefer collectivist societies, and low crime rate around the world who would gladly live and work and Japan. Unfortunately not all of us have bachelor degrees and even if we did they’re not hiring us for those jobs. They’ll take southeast Asians though, interesting. Taiwan does the same thing. Can’t imagine why.
The southeast asians are doing menial labor work for minimum pay in mostly rural areas on a very limited contract. Unfortunately that’s what they want over autistic weebs. Source: I am a southeast asian autistic weeb.
I do love this channel, but you can really see them slacking on this from a filmmaking perspective. Maybe for them, this is a chance to take a break or something. But as a filmmaker myself, I can’t help but sigh at seeing the whole mic stand covering Pete’s face, and the iris on Chris’s camera seemingly trying to snuff him out completely. Come on boys, we want to see your beautiful faces.
I feel like there will never be a last born baby in Japan. I Mean you and Sharon might even have a baby while in Japan Japan will grow and be here long into the future while other Western Nations may fold due to extreme violence and corruption and destabilisation.
I believe her name is Sharla. If they had a kid in Japan, the child wouldn’t be a Japanese citizen unless either Chris or Sharla were stateless or Japanese citizens. I think only America has birthright citizenship (which might go away this year). Even if the kid had Japanese citizenship, they’d be a foreigner as far as how Japanese people and government views them.
@Owjdnskoakansbskk Still better than being brought up in the UK, which is becoming increasingly dangerous, poorer, and miserable from our addiction to mass migration.

Chat, surely I can’t be the only one who laughs at Chris’s story about telling his students he wanted to be a pirate ? “BUT WHY CHRIS SENSEI?!?” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
He wanted to reinact AC 4
Ah yes my favorite band, “Echo and The Bunny Tail Men” 😂
And I'm digging the Elvis quiff on Chris looks pretty cool!🎉
695 years ago the Kamakura Shogunate was still a thing and the Hundred Years War between England and France hadn't started yet.
Chris looks exceptionally handsome in this weeks episode
Love how few of the comments under Chickmas say anything about the actual content of the song.
Great No Use For A Name t-shirt ❤❤❤

Pete mate, get that microphone boom arm thingy fixed! :D Loved the podcast, as ever, though.

Doing the Kumano Kodo this year :)
I took a picture of Chris, used an app to add long hair to it and it looks really sick. You should grow it out, Chris!
16:28 pete spreading misinformation casually. Maybe he meant Persona 5 strikers?

Once AI takes a hold of all industries, people will have more time have babies.
Post-scarcity society is what we should focus more on over birth rate problem.

True, it's all just propaganda to make labours cheap and rich people having a lot of power over people because how desperate people are.
Yes just let the developed worlds population decline while the third world explodes, this will end well.

What if how your baby looked depended on where it was born, not the nationality of the parents.. anyway, cheers gents🍻
though ... ironic I think ... unmarried childless foreigners in Japan talking about the Japanese birthrate ...
