To be fair, they totally can be. If your shoelace or pant leg gets stuck... You can get your damn toes mangled. Was constantly reminded of that as a kid, since there were famous cases of semi mangled body parts when clothes stuck. Had a fear of them at a certain age, took me minutes to get on the stairs, so one has to thread lightly in teaching.
They do with furries teaching kids about them.
this lady in china died cause she was pulled under one, a boy in a separate incident also died too. and then one time this escalator broke at an airport and sent all these people crashing into each other because it was very crowded and some sustained "crush" injuries. both of these instances have surveillance footage on youtube.
