Can’t mention Ross without Trey. They are great for humbuckers plugged into an amp like a twin with lots of head room IMO. Especially if you’re going to drive it. Gives you loads of focused sustain without all the volume in the frequencies you don’t want. I like to use it combo with by OD pedals mostly.
You are the only reviewer talking about Trey, probably the most famous user of the Ross compressor is why you are the best reviewer. You know all the killer guitarist that other channels don’t talk about.
I just love watching you play, John. Anyone who looks like they're having fun are always a joy to listen to. That baritone with the phaser is just magic. There's only one other person who can play Superstition with that amount of cool and vibe (3 guesses who!). Thanks for the demo and sharing your joy!
Love the Bollinger videos, GREAT player and super cool guy---its like having one of your buddies who is a smoking guitar player demo gear to a bunch of friends, great video!!
i recently got a Keeley 2 Knob compressor that i think is based off the Ross and it is amazing. when I play clean it just adds something, and if I kick it on into a fuzz or an overdrive it really starts cooking. i really really like the compressor, it's subtle but sounds great.
Cheapest way to get great distortion out of single coils is run first into a Ross compressor or a dynacomp with the Ross mod into a Boss DS-1, preferably modded. You won’t believe what use to give crap thin buzzy sounds, now gives gobs of time. And since your compression and distortion is before the signal goes into the amp - you can run a decent solid state amp, one preferably with some warmth when clean. I swear you will think you’re running boutique gear
I was in grade 9 in 1979 as well. One of the first pedals I got around that same time too, was a Shin Ei Wah, which I still have and use. I only wish I had kept my other first pedals from that time - an EHX Small Stone Phaser, and a Shin Ei Companion Fuzz, although I did still have the fuzz for many years as well, until they became a big sought after effect in the 2000s and I traded it for a late 60s Traynor 4x10 cabinet, haha. I still have my first Compressor too, a DOD FX80B from the late 80s that I got in the early 90s.
Good God that 355 is beautiful. Thats cool you know the Trey story. Trey also runs the Ross after his tube screamers which apparently isn't the normal order. Ive always been a big fan of his unconventional tone.
Seems with Ross getting off the ground again with help from JHS and Josh Scott this pedal should be making a resurgence... I just hope the new ones sound as good as you're making this compressor sound, John. Friggin fantastic tones with each different guitar! And that phaser really has it's own character... sweet demo.
The compressor should be the first effect for a new guitarist who would not yet have control over dynamics while playing. Humbuckers have a lot of very low frequency output that can swamp the control circuitry in effects like compressors. Frequency controllable compressors or a low end rolled off filter before the compressor will tame a humbucker.
I was given a Ross Compressor in 1982...but I can't remember who cave it to me. I just remember them saying it gave good clean sustain. Not long after I discovered Sly and the Family Stone and Ohio Player. That's when it made sense. I don't like all that reverb you're using.

There’s something very peaceful about John talking guitars and gear.
Updoot for the Better Call Saul intro

"Divided Sky" being One...
You can't get much more vintage than that. Thanks, John!!

OMG. I had one of these in the early 80's. Completely forgot I even had one until your review. What a flashback!
THE #1 DEMO that I have been waiting for!!
Thanks Tim
I had one in the 80's. Was one of my very first pedals, It was nice to see one again, wish I had kept it.

Fantastic demo needed by many people! Thank you

Great demo! Nice Cross at the back!!
This is a really helpful video. I recently received an unexpected Dyna-ssor and while they’re not exactly the same, your points helped a lot.

The ultimate rig rundown.
If you don’t have the Ross. Get the MXR Dyna Comp reissue. it’s around $50 used and gets close. Definitely in the same ballpark. And it’s red!
Nice things. That outro phazed my brain.
I love my old 1980 DOD 280 it’s a really good compressor to
Great Compressor n Great playing! I Dig the Vintage Fender Strat and Gibson Les Paul!
Sounds great
Thats a great intro tune, nice gibson guitar

Anything close to the compressor that you could recommend today?
The Xotic SP Compressor is basically a copy of the Ross. I have one and it is great!
I have a pristine serial# OG Ross Compressor with all OG stickers and papers. Lower part of the OG box too. 🎶🎵🎼

Dang - that's a great Strat!!!
Do the clone kits even come close?

Very cool intro to saul :P
I had one that I bought in late '79 too for $40. Very low number. 17xxx. Unfortunately I had to sell it a couple of years ago. Sold it for $400.
Does the ross give you the "click" a dyna does?
no, clean and quiet.
The originals just have the magic if you find a less noisy one especially
Aaaaaah Did you have to remind me that season 5 of Better Call Saul is not on Netflix yet? :-)
fANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those are cool! I’ve got a Ross Phaser that’s been broken for years...can’t find anyone near me to fix it, anyone in Michigan?
What is that pinstriped beauty of a Paul??
A Gibson prototype of the Joe Glaser Music City Les Paul. Love that thing
00:10:20 I wasn’t watching and I thought I heard a bass guitar 😮
Sold mine for $45 a while ago
fans fundraising for a multi-millionaire musician to buy a pedal is some hilariously absurd nonsense
Great guitar face. U start to chew your gums or somthing..it's entertaining....in truth tho I love your vidios
I got one for free recently
Just as I remembered them…noisy as hell!
