How to use a portable waste Tote / Blue Boy (RV Living Full Time) 4K

  • Even as full time RVers, we prefer to camp at state parks like the ones we are staying at this winter in Florida, rather than private RV parks. They offer a much more natural environment and spacious sites. The problem is they do not offer a sewer hookup most of the time. We like to stay the limit at state parks, which is usually about 2 weeks, but our grey water tank fills up in about a week even when using water conservatively.

So, what do we do with our poo? We use a "blue boy" but not for what you think.
Our grey tank is smaller than newer models of the Grand Design Solitude so we need to empty our grey tank about once every week. since we like to sit still for at least a week, but prefer two weeks, that's why we need a blue boy. But luckily we haven't needed to use our portable waste tote for the black tank.
Even if you think you will never use one, check out the reasons why you might need one, the best way to use them, and the blue boy we are currently using. And know Larry added his extra DIY to even this tutorial for beginner RVers and experienced alike.
What can we do when our Grey Tank is Full?
    Option 1
Use the bathhouse for showers to stretch our grey tank to 14 days (Why do we have an RV?)
    Option 2
Hitch up, drive to RV to the dump station, Dump and then Unhitch (What a Hassle)
    Option 3
Use a Portable Waste Tote (Blue Boy) to dump our grey water (Much easier)
We go over the Barker 32 Gallon 4 Wheel Tote-Along, its features, accessories and extra accessories we use.
How to Fill the Tote-Along Carefully without spilling any liquid at your campsite.
How to hook it to your vehicle to tow it to the dump station.

    How to rinse the Tote-Along

I love the idea of a connector for the 90 angle. If you add a hose connector to the tote then you can store the short hose.
    2 choices:
    1. Connect one end to the tote's hose connection, the glue the new hose connection (that doesn't enter the tote) close enough that the short hose makes a U shape.
    2. Glue a 90 angle hose connections to the tote. Either get a male to male hose adaptor to use the cap at the open end of the hose, or get a hose plug. I assume you don't want your rinse hose full of dirt, weeds, etc while driving down a dirt/gravel road.
Now everything you need at the dump end is securely attached to the tote.

Great job! I have had a 32 gallon Barker since about 2002. I have used it extensively and even lent it out for months to folks in tornado recovery areas. It finally developed a seam crack on the back side. You will never get that kind of durability out of a cheaper made Camco. Camco is good to replace under warranty but I have tired of doing that with their sewer product line. The clear 90 is key! No more looking down the vent hole from high above so you don’t get spray in the face! Thanks for a great job!

I have a 25 gallon Blue boy that has a fill indicator in the front cap. Our RV park has grey water drains but no black water. With the grandkids, we drain our tank about once a week. To tow the tank, I use a receiver hitch with no ball and use a carabiner to connect it to the tank. It has worked great for us for three years now. I also keep disposable gloves in the truck for handling the "poo wagon".

Interesting video! We've stayed in Quartzsite for about 4 weeks and had to break camp every two weeks to empty the grey and black tanks and replenish water (we have a very small unit - 24.5 feet long). I think we would be miles ahead with a blue boy because we plan on going to Quartzsite every year. Cool tip about using the connector on the blue boy to limit how much room there is in the container. Thanks for sharing this video! Stay safe, Donovan and Jodi

Quartzite is definitely a place we’d like to give a try.
You should definitely get a blue boy. It helps so much. But I don’t know how far the dump station is from Quartzsite- that would be an issue. It’s better if there is a dump station within your camping area

You can get a water bladder from Amazon to transfer fresh water back to your RV. They come in various sizes, even over 250 gallon.
These bladders are made of thick PVC. They fold up when not used to save space.
Currently Amazon has a sale on Vevor brand.
      63 gallon for $38
      87 gallon for $45
      143 gallon for $57
Just remember that water weighs about 8.3 pounds per gallon (temperature and elevation changes this).
      60 gallons is 500 pounds.
      85 gallons is 710 pounds
      140 gallons is 1162 pounds
I assume that you won't fully fill a tote.
When I bought mine (haven't used yet) I bought a 63 gallon. A few days later the 87 gallon went on sell for cheaper than I paid for the 63. I originally was going to return the 63 but decided to keep both. Having the fresh water bladder securely in the bed of the truck is nice. The Vevor totes include 4 handles (for transport which I doubt) that can be used to tie down the bladder.
      1. With how small and light these are (63 gallon weighs 12.8 pounds empty, 87 gallon weighs 16.1 pounds empty) I wanted a spare in case one failed.
      2. If I'm camping at a site without water, but the campground has water I can just grab 60 gallons when I dump tanks using my dump tote.
      3. If I'm boondocking without local fresh water I can take both and bring back up to 150 gallons of fresh water. Its often easier to find a pit toilet to dump into than fresh water.
I have a drill powered pump to transfer the fresh water to the RV fresh water tank. This means I can keep the tote in the truck. Vevor also sells a 12v transfer pump for about $44. Rated at 6gpm up to 46 feet in height and weighs 5.8 pounds. They also have 115vac versions.
I also bought a 12v macerstor pump. These are designed to macerate or grind black tank contents. The version I bought has a standard RV connector input but the output is via a garden hose. I have a black hose specifically (and only) for use with the pump. This allows me to put my dump tote in the bed of my truck and pump the black or grey tank into the dump tank. Then at a dump station or pit toilet I can pump from the dump tank (still in the bed of the truck) to the dump location. This means I can drive many miles at up to freeway speeds to dump if needed.
My truck has a built in inverter. You can make a custom converter plug to give 12v power via 4 pin or 7 pin trailer connection really easily as both provide a ground and +12v pin (this is what charges your trailer's 12v lead acid house battery while the tow vehicle engine is running; using it's alternator). I also have a small lifepo4 12v 10ah battery.
I have a clear sediment filter for these fresh water totes. This not only filters basic sediment but you can see if the water is off color or other debris. You never know what the "fresh water" supply is. I've seen the supply about 20 feet into the snake river and from lakes/ponds. Why waste your time hauling back very bad water?
At the RV I use a sediment filter and the cheap "RV" disposable filter. This simply is a pre-filter. In the RV I installed a basic single stage filter at the input that filters all water. I've purchased a 5 stage filter with an RO stage and UV for drinking/cooking.
Just because a faucet says "fresh" or "potable" water does NOT mean that it's safe. Most locations RV'ers get potable water are rarely if ever tested. Even public water is only usually tested at the water source. This ignores the miles of piping. Many places, especially rural still have sections of lead pipe. Long ago some places actually used wooden pipes. Some "pipes" are made from brick and/or concrete. Some of these rural public water supplies have equipment 50, 70, 100 or more years old.
      Be safe, be prepared!

I use the lower dumping connection on the tote with a twist on valve at the end of the sewer hose. I can fill the tote, shut both valves (twist on and tote), and then disconnect with minimal spillage. My trailer sits lower so this setup is optimal to get the RV grey tank completely empty..

I guess it depends on your set up. Our rig would be much more work to hitch and unhitch just to dump grey water. Most of the time we can manage - but if there’s no bath house and we are there for more than a week, we love that we have the portable to dump the grey.

Oh come on Alice get in there. It is only crap. lol Just dump your grey tank on the ground. Cmon man. Come on drop that black tank to. It aint now big deal. You are full timers just do it. I do like that thin layout of that tank. I do like how you are touching all the parts bear handed. That is full time life. lol On you written step guide. Always start with a bit of grey then go black. If it leaks you want grey not black to leak out. That is what I do anyway. Great idea on that glued on connector. I like that. I am going to do that myself. Good stuff man. I can honestly say I learned some new tricks on here. Very helpful.

If we stay for more than a week - which is rare- we may have it hooked up, but keep valve closed. And only open to fill. If you leave it open, you are subject to bugs. Plus, you can monitor so Blueboy doesn’t overflow - major fine at a lot of places
