HDPE can be fixed using a heat gun and a scrap piece of high density polyethylene. You can use parts of a milk bottle or similar container. Then slowly heat the leaking section up until it becomes playable and sticky. Then lay in a precut section of the milk jug and heat a little more until bonded. Or if you have nothing to addd, use a metal scraper and pull material over the leaking section.
I tried that. And other plastics don't work. Have to be the same body plastic melted into each other. If you add other plastic it wont seal
I plan on getting a 28 gallon Rhino, but I'll be leaving it in the back of my truck and filling it with a macerator pump (do the expenses of camping ever stop? 😂). We almost never have a dump station anywhere close, so towing the tote wouldn't be an option.

You didn’t need to replace the tank. Mine developed the very same leak. I used a soldering iron and pice of plastic from a laundry detergent bottle.
The tank is made from HDPE as are most plastic bottles. Just look for the recycling label. All you do is heat the tank and use the plastic piece as solder. It works great
The wheels are another major issue. Simply put they are garbage. Mine failed in less than 2 years
I followed the advice from another RUclips channel and installed 13 inch rubber wheels using a piece of 5/8 inch threaded rod for the axle.
The tank is now 100% better.

I purchased the 28 gallon model, developed the same leak at the fill port after 4 uses and a little over a year old. Contacted Camco and they sent a replacement in less than a week. The support rep told me the tank has been improved but you can't see that from the outside, same seam. Big Improvement on the wheel mount to the axle with a "c" clip instead of a pressed on cap. I was successful in the repair of the old tank with JB Weld marine weld. It is the same color as the tank. I have a video of this on my channel. Nice review!
We’ve gone through 2 Rhinos. First one had a tire break off and when that happened there was a hole on the bottom of the tank. Our 2nd one first the tires fell off. We put pins in and that held up but again the tires broke into pieces and the tank had a big hole plus the side drain broke. We left a trail of wastewater. It was nasty.
Bad news: I’ve had my rhino 28 exactly as long as you did and mine sprung the same leak! I’m glad I saw this video, I’m going to switch brands.
if its only a year old, its still under the 2 year warranty..... contact them and they will replace it for ya... and if you tell them the situation you had, they might reimburse you since you bought another...
I add a twist on gate valve on my RV also and it has worked out great. Camco looks like the best dump tank.

Talk about timing. Guess we always have to be prepared for issues. Great review. We saw these Tote Tanks and honestly didn't even know what they're called. My husband calls them the honey tank. You made very good points. We definitely need to get one before our next long trip.
I just bought a new rhino today, they have upgraded and fixed every problem you have had except the lanyard in the new one. they fixed the wheels with C- clips, the entire tank is now one piece at the outlet you show in the video. the dump hose is now gray and not orange (no idea why)... i also never wear gloves, i bleach my tank outlets and hand sanitizer my hands.

I am sure that if you contact Camco re the leak, possibly replace it, If you just have small pinhole, try using an appropriate size sheet metal screw with a rubber washer or sealant under the head of the screw.
As for the cap lanyards, drill a small hole in the center of the cap, push or thread a sheet metal (stainless) screw through hole in lanyard and screw rge screw into the cap. Don't screw it in all thre way, leave it a bit loose so it will swivel when you remove / install cap.
RE dump valve leak, take a heavy piece of wire, put a 90 degree bend 1/2 inch from end. Next time tank is empty, use the hooked end of wire to clean the groove the slide enters.

Had the same situation on our Rhino Honey Wagon. I USED JB Water Weld on inside and out. Did six dumps, and it is still holding.
Thanks for the great video. I agree on the gloves; you have to store them afterwards so I feel it's easier just to wash my hands. I don't plan on getting anything on my hands anyway and if a little... I'm not toxic...
I know this video has been out a while - but I had to comment on your non-use of gloves.
I've seen people dumping in full hazmat suits - well close enough - elbow length yellow gloves, a plastic knee length apron, face shield, etc.
I assume those people (if they had kids) used the same outfits to change diapers? LOL
I keep biodegradable antibacterial camp soap in my dump compartment and just wash my hands after. No big deal. I do have a box of disposable gloves in the dump compartment but I've only used them once, when the dump station was SO nasty that I didn't even want to touch the water hose.
I've had my 36 gal tote tank for nearly two years now. I used it for the VERY first time last weekend. I found out my tote tank has a crack practically in the same spot yours did. Right where the filler neck blends into that part that looks like it was added on later. I also noticed that inside the filler neck that it appears to not be sealed properly. So, beside the crack on the outside there is also a void on the inside. I'm in contact with Camco to remedy the issue. We will see if they come through.
In a bind, I purchased a Barker dump tank without doing any research. I prefer the pneumatic tires of the Barker but wish they had incorporated a ladder hang hook into their design.
Thank Jason for showing this video on the portable dump tank. That’s is really good to use and do if your camping somewhere and there’s no dumping station. That’s really nice. It looks easy to do. Glad you are able to fix the problem with that tank but now you have the other tank to fix as well. Would you be able to put it in video how you do that one if you don’t mind? I have three of these because people gave them to me because of this very reason.I used a epoxy stick that you knead till it is a constant color. I applied it on these leaks. It's sad they can't make them better. I do like them over the other style. Like your info 👌

Mine did the same and it was only one month old used 4 times. Had to melt the plastic and add Epoxy glue
I’m new to the whole dumping process. What’s that thing called that you pulled up to allow the tank to dump? I’d be using my blue boy only for grey water
I thought I'd always use gloves. I found dumping the tanks is a lot cleaner of a process than I had imagined. I don't use gloves any more.
We have the 28-gallon version and I like it for all the reasons you mentioned. And I have no problem being excited over a quality floater toter.

I'm so damn mad, I just found this video because my 38 gallon rhino tank that is less than 6 months old sprung a leak in the exact same spot but I have never strapped it down anywhere near there.
Bought a 42 gallon Barker because of the tire issues and leaks.

Curious if a screw with silicone would have plugged that hole. works on tires. expensive hole to fix by buying a whole new tank.
JB Water Weld Putty solved our problem. Was able to put it on the inside and outside. Six dumps after the repair and it is still holding. If it I will purchase another type after more research. Hope this helps.

Good video and very informative. I’m going to invest in the Camco tote. Are you happy with the larger tote or if given the option, would you go back to the 28 gallon model? I have an unrelated question...how did you strengthen your number to hold your generator?
I'd go back to the 28. There's not much difference in size, but the 36 gallon full is just way too heavy. I'm a fairly strong guy, but it's rough to drag it up to the truck. It weighs 300 lbs full, so I generally don't fill it all the way up. Our bumper came that way, the rack is built in integral to the frame.
@@RVMiles I appreciate you getting back to me. I was thinking the same thing about the weight and I’m glad you confirmed my thoughts...there’s no way I can handle 300 pounds. Thanks for the info on your bumper too. Mine is not as strong as yours, so I’ll just have continue to loading it in the back of my truck.
@@bobz1962 you might also consider the one with the front wheels in either size. I'm sure it's a bit easier to haul around.

What is the proper way to clean up if you have a spill at your campsite? Everyone talk about possibility of spilling or leaking but haven't seen anyone say what is the proper way to clean up.
For a little spill, there's not much you can do other than spray it down with a lot of water.
Can you remove the dump gate valve from your old rhino tank and install on your rig?
Maybe, I bought a new one anyway. It's a bit of a pain to get to because the underbelly covering has to be removed, so I'm waiting until I'm somewhere with full hook-ups to fix it.
Now you just need to do the wheel hub fix. These are NOTORIOUS for the axle caps coming off while pulling it! The wheel comes off, the tank drags for about ten feet and the plastic gives way to a hole. Now you have a manure spreader.
So the good news is - they’ve improved the hubs. I never had that issue with the old one, but know many have.
I had the issue. I got the package from Mr. Bezos opened it up, dump my tanks into it, headed to the dump station. Didn't realize I was and was "slingin 'nure". Got a blue boy when I got home.
Update? Still recommending the Rhino?
The new one hasn't had any issues yet. I still think it's the best-built one available. No need to get any bigger than the 28 gallon. Just too heavy.
It looks like the "Blue Boy" tank is higher than the sewer hookup on the RV.
It often is, but as long as it's below the level of the tank in the RV itself, it will empty fine.
man you need to getto the point of the video not tell an hour long story about the leaks in your tanks and how you got them
