This reminds me so much of the book Still Alice by Lisa Genova-a 50-55 year old well-respected professional working in Boston with young onset Alzheimer’s! So important to hear these voices, thank you Laurie!

That was so generous of Laurie. It helps so much. I know a lot of people who think illness is some kind of lifestyle choice I'd love to play them this video. I fell ill young & I want to say
    "Yesterday I was you.
    Tomorrow you could be me"
People don't want to think this can really happen to someone who hasn't done anything to deserve it. Fear causes prejudice that brings out these cruel comments. It can happen to this professional, capable lady with everything going for her. I admire & respect her so much for sharing, she has to be so strong in spirit. Teepa draws this out so well, I recommend her videos to everyone I can, thank you both

You are an amazing woman, Laurie.
I'm on a breast cancer journey. I have friends and family that surprisingly have abandoned me during this time. I've chalked it up to THEIR inability to deal with it, but it's still very disappointing and hurtful.
I have an 89 year old woman I caretake for with dementia. She has no clue and cannot even fathom that she has it. I humor her and help her as best I can.
We're all on a journey in life, and I so wish you the very best on yours!

My mother was diagnosed with dementia and the biggest problem for her and everyone who cares for her is vodka and she has Tinnitus so everything has been horrible for me I am her youngest daughter and I have so many questions to try to help her. I know I have early onset. It’s been getting worse for me to try to care for mom and feeling like I am worse than my mother. I have smoked since I was younger I also Have COPD I HAVE NUMB EXTREMITIES FROM NOT GETTING ENOUGH OXYGEN!
I babble like an idiot because I can’t remember words that just disappear from my brain I feel stupid a lot because I lose words so I describe around the word’s I am trying to use?

My cousin is in the “hiding it” phase of LBD. She won’t even admit she has it (because of the “D” word). She insists she just has early stage Parkinson’s. But she has every LBD symptom: sleep disorders, hallucinations, sever anxiety, paranoia, gait/equilibrium problems, etc. She had a very bad reaction to a Parkinson’s med.

I wonder if it's possible that the people who called you a liar were simply going through a very selfish phase of grief: denial: that you, who are truly alive are going through a very long slow death. For now you breath, try to love...even those who cannot love in return. Still your choice to close the door to those who don't accept you for who you are is totally valid. Love while we can, for there will be a day ...God bless you all for this video.

So many people can only think of people living with dementia at the late stages, but there is so much living (and talking) left to be done. When we focus on what is possible and help people find situations for success, the interactions will be so much more positive for everyone. I went to a neurologist and psychologist to be evaluated. Brain scan showed ischemic changes and I think it was white matter problems. Psychologist tested iq and said I had lost 21 points but I was fine because I was still in the “normal” range!! That was in 2017. He told me to come back later and be tested again! I never went back because it seemed so nonsensical to me. I am worse but prob not way worse. Idk. That’s why to hear your guest speak so coherently and intelligently was a relief because it speaks to my experience. I’m very aware of where my probs are. I know that when severmedal thoughts enter my brain at one time my mind freezes up or I panic. I know when I am put on a new Med there can be cognitive impacts and I need to call doc to get me off of it. It’s also a relief to kind of know what level I’m at. I believe myself to be a diamond with occasional forays into emerald territory so it is less scary than I was thinking. I’m losing ground (forgetful, clumsy, loose things, panic stuff, lack of trust, confusion) but not that fast. I’m 80. Anyway, thanks. My family is upset by the changes in me and are scared🤷🏽‍♀️

Hi Laurie, this is Dan from Teepa's team. I don't know of any direct correlation between cancer treatment and the onset of dementia, but I also don't know that it can be ruled out. Treatment for cancer can put a person's body under a lot of stress, and while it may not cause a dementia per se, it may accelerate something pre-existing. This sounds like a great question for Teepa. I'll pass it along to her, but if you would want to join us for our free, monthly Ask Teepa Anything, you could even ask her yourself :) Check out our website teepasnow.com to see when the next one is and register.
