- Today we will look into Making your own All Purpose or the Universal Soil Mix for Succulents and Cacti. This Recipe or the Formula works best in all seasons throughout the year including rainy season.
Before I start with the ingredients to make our All purpose Cactus Mix or Succulent Potting Mix, You need to remember one simple basic concept. Succulents need to be planted in a soil that holds enough water for them to absorb what they need but for a short duration of time and it should drain out quickly so the roots won’t rot. Hence Soil with the best drainage is crucial for succulent survival.
Now coming to the ingredients and proportions to make the best Potting Mixture for Succulents and cacti. You can use this mix for growing both indoor as well as outdoor succulents.

I Have Portulacaria Afra before I don’t use any substrate I just used straight Garden soil for 3 years no problem with me .But last Couple of Months of May i used garden soil pebbles sand and perlite i see they don’t hold moisture for long time which is beneficial for succulents.A lot of people don’t agree with garden soil but to me it’s a Yes ,i just remember the basic don’t water your succulent if it still moist or wet water your succulent when it’s bone dry. Thanks for your wonderful video
I could honestly listen to this dude talk all day. Also, very informative video!
yaaa haha
So your saying you like listening to the extended car warranty guy?????
Thanks a lot. Most honest succulent potting mix. No fancy stuff. Simple straightforward and easy. Subscribing this channel because of this potting mix👌👌
Thank you.I’ve watched many videos regarding soil mixes, but I’m sure you are the only one who has mentioned charcoal.👍
Perfect. Thank you. I was wondering about perlite and the coconut bricks for so long. And here you answered about them both. ❤️
👍
Sir, if that’s ok and not much trouble, maybe you can advice me what fertilize I should use for the succulent plants and do I need to add iron, magnesium and/or calcium. So is what PH of the soil is preferable for succulents. Thank you in advance 🌷
They need very less. U can give vermicompost which has all these nutrients and sufficient. If its flowering plants like kalanchoe adeniums, u need to fertilize organic like cowdung or Npk fertilizer once 15 days.
Thank you 🙏
Others say add the peat, he says no
Thank u dear so nice if you
Our nursery man is not guiding good
He wants to sell his compost which is full of cocoopeet .

This has to be the best video explaining what to use and why or why not, I will Highly Recommend to all my groups. I recently bought coco coir after seeing several videos that used it as a base for Adenium seed germination, it may work in the desert but not here in Georgia (High Humidity spring & summer) and find out that it holds too much water, so now I will need to transplant them quicker into a mix using your recipe or if you have another recipe just for seed/seedlings, They did sprout in 3 days it's been 1 week today, can you do a video on Adenium from seed until 1 year old (should cover most of my questions) with detail on the right soil mix, how to water, cover or not to cover with plastic, sun, gro-lights, or shade and for how long, then transplanting after 1 month or when to, I still have seeds to plant, I'm just testing very few seeds to see what does work best here in my region but I can't keep buying different products and risk having problems later. Also, I would like your opinion on using these ingredients or substitutes- lava rocks/pebbles, chicken grit, pumice, perlite, pine bark or fir bark into the mix to help with drainage, I have different recipes for them all, it gets very confusing. Thank You Excellent Videos! It's A Rainy Night In Georgia!
Thanks. Adenium’s keep away from coco peat or coir. I have an old video on how to germinate Adenium seeds ruclips.net/video/CDMwe7SslnM/видео.html
But these were amazon bought Adenium seeds that never germinate. Now I have seed pods in my Adenium, will harvest fresh seeds and make a video of entire process. ,
Pumice is 👍 here it’s too costly.
Such a thorough video. Thank you!
Thank you
Thank you so much
Your video has helped me a lot
❤❤❤ Tks video
Very good
May God bless
Whenever my Ro carbon filter changed ..I collected activated carbon granulars from old carbon filter ..it works wonder in cacti and succulent potting mix
Thanks
lovely video
Generally, this is very good advice, but cacti are very diverse, and some do well with higher levels of water and organic material. I learned this lesson trying to grow Pitahaya and another tropical cactus. They like a little more water, increased nutrients and can handle more organic soil.

Awesome and informative vdo. Thx for sharing.
I was scouring for a video that explains the importance of charcoal in potting mix. Glad I came across this. I love the Amaryllis bulb & I do grow a lot of them. Lately, I bought some from Holland but they are rotting real fast! I keep them outdoors. I live in Malaysia, hence our weather is humid with really wet monsoons. This doesn't help them, does it? )): Someone suggested I try using potting mix for succulents for my bulbs. Kindly advise 🤷♀️
Amaryllis I have them in my regular potting soil ans they are doing well - ruclips.net/video/0I_IIbVqeME/видео.html
@@GardenTips Thank you. Will try it out :)
Thank you very much doctor. U have made my garden haven and my hobby easier.
Dear Sir Kindly suggest best options for Perlite as it is not easily available

I am from odisha, my succulents are dying. Here we don't get coco peat or perlite. Kindly suggest how to make potting mix and also take care of succulents... i am a failure i growing succulents 😔😔
Only 2 minimal steps are important. Sand and soil 1:1 for potting mix.
Watering once in a week.
That’s all and once in 3 months a handful of compost per container.
So very informative.
We can use spanch sir ? So that spanch sucks water and when plant need they take from spanch
Ghar ke jali लकङी को charcol ke place per le sakte hai ?

Can this soil do well for mango planting. If not can you do a video on best material use for mango soil and best nutrition for mango soil feed and leaf spray feeding?
This one is best for most plants - ruclips.net/video/0I_IIbVqeME/видео.html
An extremely crisp video. Tons of information. What ORGANIC fertilizer would you suggest for succulents and what should be the frequency? Thanks in advance.
Most succulents do well with occasional once in 3 to 6 months Cowdung powder or vermicompost including flowering succulents.
Does the charcoal have to be activated or the normal one from the depot will work fine?
@Garden Tips Pumice stone is an alternative for which ? Is it alternative for river sand ? Is it okay if river sand is omitted?
Also could you let me know a composition without soil(heavy) , more lighter composition.
Can I transfer fruiting n flowering lemon plant to bigger point
If you like to use aggregate you can use it, after all succulents only have shallow roots for catching water
So good to come across this video. Can I use the same potting mix for snake plants as well?
Yes 👍
@@GardenTips oh that's wonderful. Thank you👍
Nice
Great timing Dr. Got some new succulents and was wondering about what soil mix to use. Thank you again🙏
Great 👍
Thanks,, 4 gud suggest sir👍👍
Thanks for watching and commenting! Also please tweet or share the video if possible.
Can you make a video on the difference between perlite and pumice and which one is better to use?
I have already posted last year ruclips.net/video/b0ow7crxUfA/видео.html
GARDEN TIPS ok this says difference between perlite and vermiculite, can you post the difference between perlite and pumice?
Good video, but since i dont have neem cake powder in my country so like, Can i use more charcoal instead?
Yes to charcoal and also You can use trichoderma powder - ruclips.net/video/YDPUtd6BPt8/видео.html
Sir, my parijat plant is dying. It's leaves are curling backward and turned in brown colour then drop down. According to your advise , if I use hydrozen paroxcide , should I pour the solution on the soil ? Mine one is 6 percent concentrate. Please mention the amount of Hydrozen paroxide and the water. Thanks.
Thank you!!
How many days before the soil of lithops has to be prepared?
What do you think of substitution of perlite for pumice? It’s heavier but a lot cheaper.
Sure. Both do the same job. In my place pumice is expensive. Good for you 👍
Hi. I am planning to get succulents and cacti for outdoors. Currently, I have river sand, cocopeat, compost, rice husk ash, and pumice stones. Are these good enough for making the potting mix?
Hi. Yep 👍
@@GardenTips Can you please tell me proportions with the said ingredients?
Are worm castings considered a good compost? in smaller portions of course
Yes vermicompost is great source of micronutrients as well as NpK and provides a balanced nutrition to plants.
Useful to know that cocopeat should be omitted from soil mix for succulents because it holds water and can cause root rot in these. No I know why my supposedly hardy succulents are not doing well.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Is there a specific charcoal that must be used for this mix? What exactly should I look for and avoid?
