This is a short version of my "MASTER" succulent soil mix. The long version was uploaded on my other channel "Liz Kreate" but link below the video. Thanks!

That’s the same mix I use only I don’t use granite I use horticulture grit which basically does the same job. I also use worm castings to fertilise. You have the most beautiful specimens you truly are a pro!
I do 2 part succulent soil mix 2 part perlite and about 15% small granite Pebbles that I had in my patio. I was lucky enough to have enough of ingredients to make a huge batch And pot everything once in for all because the mixture I had at first wasn't draining sufficiently. once a month I give them a little bit of liquid cactus & succulent food. they have all been doing so well since I changed that soil mix. they are all finally getting good root systems instead of just shallow balls.

I did 4 tests with all golden barrel cacti and all the same size starting about year ago. The one with ONLY Bonsai Jack has grown the most. The one with Bonsai Jack, Espoma Organic Cactus Mix, and 100% perlite did the next best. 33/33/33 ratio. Next was Bonsai Jack and 100% perlite. Mix 70/30. The worst one was the one that was Espoma Organic Cactus Mix mixed at a ratio of 50/50 with perlite. One thing of note was the Second one, the Bonsai Jack, Espoma Organic Cactus Mix, and 100% perlite, 33/33/33 mix, it made the golden barrel cactus "pop" out above the media. It doesn't look like it has a good foundation, but it does and is growing well. Wiggling the small Barrel Cacti itself, the Second one has the least wiggling, followed by the first, then the third, and finally the fourth. All golden barrels were bought at the same time from the same place and at the same size. They have all been watered the same every time, in the same type of pot, and in the same growing conditions. I bought these four golden barrels last year for this reason or testing different media I will use. In my opinion Bonsai Jack is the best, followed by the the one with Bonsai Jack, and 100% perlite. The problem with Esopma Cacti mix is that it completely dries between watering. Therefore, it makes it almost impossible to get water to the roots and then let them aerate. Esopma is the equivalent of letting peat moss dry. It's so hard to get watered thoroughly without aggravating the media. The cacti are in a constant state of drought I would think, watering once a month.
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK If I could send you pics of the four Golden Barrel Cacti I tested this in I would. I bought seven gallons of the Bonsai Jack Grit mix to replant all my cacti in last night.
My gritty bonsai soil mix isn't really taking to my plants it's just a bunch of pebbles that fall everywhere so I mixed some cactus soil with it and I'm hoping it'll keep my plants alive because now some of the leaves are starting to fall off. The regular cactus soil work great for my jade gollum plant.. so I'm hoping by mixing the regular cactus soil with the bonsai soil I'll have success. Hello! Looking for the organic fertilizer that has seaweed, fish, manure and humic acid. Can you suggest a specific brand? Happy planting from Austin,TX USA
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK Hi Liz, thanks for the feedback. I'm not new to succulents, but I'm trying to get better with the soil. Can you or anyone else out there advise on something comparable. I'd love my succulents to look like yours! The organic fertilizer is the only thing I'm missing.
Hey Liz can soil better be adjusted based on your area? I typically use sifted potting soil(by my own hands) and perlite because it's easy to find here in Florida at about a 50/50 mix. I have thought about alternative ingredients like coarse sand and peat. But I'm not sure what mix ratios. I live in Florida I can get 7 days of rain in a row. So I like that mix because it seems to dry out in the top half of the the large pots fast. Even though they're under a over hang there is still possible misting from rain. Also couple that with 90% humidity. Do you have suggestions. I am a year into this and I have nearly 500 plants possibly. I have lost some but as I have dived deeper in the hobby I have realized soil is the most important aspect to a healthy garden. I have repotted everything and made plants look better then when I have gotten them. Any ratios for quick draining soil would be more then noted for future projects of mine.
And they said that succulents are easy to grow....LOL I love the simplicity of decomposed granite because it seems to have all the mineral requirements for growing “some” succulents suitable to my area. BUT...If I live in an area with high humidity...I would probably use a media that can absorb moisture without compromising the water requirements needed by the plants. I’ve been planning to do a video on this topic (Soil mixture for wet and dry season locations)hopefully sooner than later, so please keep watching for my future soil videos.
I don't do anything to the leaves until they grow roots. No roots, no water. When rooted, keep them moist (dry top between watering) until they grow to a certain size. Usually between 1 month to 3 months, depending on the succulent.
Question! I may have already asked this in another video, but have you ever used Hydrogen Peroxide mixed with water to water your succulents every now and then? It's supposedly very good for roots, for all plants. Also, Sifting the soil is GENIUS! I HATE all the twigs and chunks in the soil! We have a ton of granite road base - so I will sift, like you have. I was trying to "pick" the small pieces. dumb! thank you again! I enjoy your videos!
There's a saying that goes "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." I will only try something new if I have a problem with my plants. So far they're all doing exceptionally well. You can maybe try using Hydrogen Peroxide yourself and please let me know how it goes. Happy New Year and may 2021 be a great year for you.
Hi Liz, I've been learning a lot from u si tks for your videos. I have a question: based on the video it seems u use 0%organic matter and 20% mineral. I've heard other people use from 20 to 40% organic matter but never 80. What do u think would be the best ratio for my indoor plants in Florida? Tks
This Master soil mix is for succulents mainly grown outdoors. I use this soil mix only for certain types of succulent indoor plants like Peperomia. Different indoors plants will need different soil mix. For example, Orchids will need a different type soil to a Philodendron or a succulent peperomia.
I just bought 15 succulents for my new plantstand and I'm curious if i needed to repot them when i first got them. I've had them for 2 weeks now and the soil they're in is hard i can't even get my finger in so should i repot them or wait until spring? (Its a snowy January right now)
Hi I need some guidance I have ordered about 30 succlents, mix of 18 hawartia plus 20 more. The soil I have access here is potting mix, pumice, perlite cocopeat, potting sand, organic fertilizer cow dung, gravel an then cactus mix bags.. What would be the best and cheap option for me .... Although the common option we have here is cow dung, sand mix which nursery use here an easily provide an time to time they add fertilizer ... So pls advise thanks
The list of media you have is perfect for making a similar mix to my master succulent soil mix in this video. The only thing I wouldn't use is the sand. Just follow the same ratio in this video.
I really have to thank you for these videos.Amazing plants, amazing straightforward directions! A question though:I can't find decomposed granite. Is there an alternative material I could use?Thank you in advance!
Pumice, volcanic rocks, red scoria, stone fired clay pebbles are good alternatives. I'll also be doing a video sometime this month on an alternative succulent soil mix for places that receives a lot of rain or for those people who loves watering their succulents...LOL
Hi Liz, I love love love your garden, could you tell me the name of the pink succulent at 0:29, the one is at the right bottom corner, I tried to see what was written on your tag but I can't, thank you 🥰
I have all my ingredients to make my master mix, however we don’t have access to decomposed granite (searched everywhere😕) I used pumice instead. Thank you Liz for sharing😊
Hi Liz I just got the potting mix by deliver but I found out they’re send me the wrong one is one already add the fertilizer so I think I should take that back to change the one no add the fertilizer right?! Thank you for your share 😃
You can still use that mix with 50% no fertilizer. Then you don't need to add fertilizer anymore. You can also use them for my Intermediate soil mixture. They are also great for some indoor plants, string of hearts, Rhipsalis or Crassula just to name a few.
Hi lizzz, hope you are doing fine!!, I was just wondering if we could use Miracle Gro's potting mix and avoid adding any extra fertilizer. Or probably change it up a little, since the mix already has coconut coir in it (probably 3 parts MG potting mix, 1 part compost and the granite or pumice). Have a nice day!!
I haven't tried Miracle Gro potting mix but if it was me....I would not add anymore compost. Instead add a 1 part out of 3 some granite or pumice or scoria or volcanic rocks.
Hi Ms Liz. Can I use Osmocote 14-14-14 as an alternative for the seamungus or rite-gro? Or if you have better suggestions, would highly appreciate it. I’m living here in the PH and I’m having a hard time looking for the best fertilizers to use. Thank you! ♥️
May I suggest using organic fertilizer such as chicken or cow manure pellets. Blood and bone pellets is also good. Seaweed pellets also. Pellet form is best as it's slowly realeased into the soil. If you can get a fertilizer with lower nitrogen...much preferred by succulents for coloring up. Good luck.
hi mam.liz im always watching your blogs, i would like to ask what is the alternative of granite here in Philippines? can i use, limestone as alternative. im having a hard time buying pumice here in Mindanao. hope for ur response. thanks a lot.
You can try out other medium but granite and pumice is my preference. Don't know about your postal system in Mindanao but I thought nowadays, anyone can get anything online. Good luck.
Don't know what potting mix you get from you're country so it's difficult for me to say. Depending on the size of the pot and the soil mixture, I only water when the soil dries up.
I'm not familiar with what's available in USA but, SEAMUNGUS is made up of seaweed, fish, humic acid and manure. Fertilizer with the same ingredients will also do. Cheers
Hi mam liz i just want to ask what kind of organic compost you used in ur soilmix? Does any organic compost will do?? Or there is specific compost for succulents?
Hi Liz, I found your channel recently and have been loving the content. I have a question about the potting mix portion of your recipe. In the US, most potting mixes are peat moss with some other things added. Is that also the case in Australia? I’m wondering because peat moss can be hydrophobic and I’ve watched other videos of yours where you take off most of the peat moss that new succulents are planted in at the nursery.
According to their SDS report. It's a blend of raw and/or 100% None Allocated composted natural organic materials, with addition of mineral additives. Most of the potting mix we have in Australia are free of peat moss. They are mostly consist of leaves, lawn cuttings, mulched garden plants twigs and bark.
For me, if I don't have granite...I would be using pumice. I also have a new video on "Succulent Tropical Master soil mix" using pumice for humid areas or for people who loves watering their succulent. Link below the video in the description box. Thanks for watching.
DECOMPOSED Granite can be available at your local Garden landscape suppliers. It varies from different places. SEAMUNGUS is the fertilizer I use and I got mine from my local hardware store(Bunnings Warehouse).

Hello from Sydney, Liz. I love you videos, thank you so much for sharing :-) ANL has something called DECO granite, they said it is decomposed granite but the grains looks a lot finer than your granite... is that the right granite to get? Also, how do you identify the succulents? A lot of the ones from bunnings doesn’t have a name 😔
Succulent identification can be done online. Type in succulent for sale and go to online stores that sells succulents. Decomposed granite will vary from different locations and all contains minerals that the succulents love. The one I use in my videos is not available commercially. Similar granite can be use but will be a lot finer than the one I'm using so you'll have to sieve first to remove the fine powder. I'm now using granite from Corkhill Bros. Landscaping Supplier in Mitchell, ACT. Link below and take a look at the yellow granite to see if it's similar to ANL. www.corkhillbros.com.au/landscaping-supplies-canberra/granites-canberra/

@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK thank you! you too!

(Its a snowy January right now)
I try and avoid re-potting during winter or when the p[lant is dormant. Best time for re-pot is during the plants growing season.

Hi Liz, I love love love your garden, could you tell me the name of the pink succulent at 0:29, the one is at the right bottom corner, I tried to see what was written on your tag but I can't, thank you 🥰
Echeveria cuspidata var. gemmula
Question Liz do you bring your succulents in during winter?
A very small handful but most or nearly all of them stay outside.
I have all my ingredients to make my master mix, however we don’t have access to decomposed granite (searched everywhere😕) I used pumice instead. Thank you Liz for sharing😊
If you can get hold of Zeolite(add 10%), you'd have the perfect replacement for granite. Wishing you all the best Marie.

Hi Liz
I just got the potting mix by deliver but I found out they’re send me the wrong one is one already add the fertilizer so I think I should take that back to change the one no add the fertilizer right?!
Thank you so much for reply me 😃
Hi lizzz, hope you are doing fine!!, I was just wondering if we could use Miracle Gro's potting mix and avoid adding any extra fertilizer.
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK Ok Liz, thank you so much for answering. So if I were to add compost, do you think that would be an intermediate mix?
Love ur chanel
I will try to use this soil mix,but what if I don’t have decomposed granite?what can i use as a substitute?
Pumice and a dash(1/4 Part) of Zeolite.
Good luck.
Thank you Ms Liz! ♥️
What is the fertilizer do you use? I've been using Osmocote for awhile.
Seamungus by Neutrog.
Can I mix potting and perlte and sand and little gravel rock Thank
You can try and see how it goes but I prefer using pumice and granite.
hi mam.liz im always watching your blogs, i would like to ask what is the alternative of granite here in Philippines? can i use, limestone as alternative. im having a hard time buying pumice here in Mindanao. hope for ur response. thanks a lot.
You can try out other medium but granite and pumice is my preference. Don't know about your postal system in Mindanao but I thought nowadays, anyone can get anything online. Good luck.

Can I use any brand potting mix without fertilizer ? and how much water should I give? I'm from tropical area
Don't know what potting mix you get from you're country so it's difficult for me to say. Depending on the size of the pot and the soil mixture, I only water when the soil dries up.
Is there a Seamungus alternative that can be found in the USA?
I'm not familiar with what's available in USA but, SEAMUNGUS is made up of seaweed, fish, humic acid and manure. Fertilizer with the same ingredients will also do. Cheers

Yes you can if mix with other medium.

Hi mam liz i just want to ask what kind of organic compost you used in ur soilmix? Does any organic compost will do?? Or there is specific compost for succulents?
Any composted soil will do.
Hi Liz! Are there any other alternatives for granite?
Pumice and volcanic rocks like scoria or basalt with added 5% zeolite for the minerals.
Thankyou so much for this video🥰
My pleasure 😊
Can I use paumice instead of granite
Yes you can. Adding other rock minerals such as zeolite, basalt or scoria also helps.
@@GrowingSucculentswithLizK interesting! thanks Liz! ❤️
Can I use perlite or cinder instead of granitr
For me, if I don't have granite...I would be using pumice. I also have a new video on "Succulent Tropical Master soil mix" using pumice for humid areas or for people who loves watering their succulent. Link below the video in the description box. Thanks for watching.
What fertilizer do you use
Seamungus by Neutrog for most part and also others depending on the plants.
Where can you get decomposed Granit please and what brand of fertiliser is that? Newbie to succies 😁🙈
DECOMPOSED Granite can be available at your local Garden landscape suppliers. It varies from different places. SEAMUNGUS is the fertilizer I use and I got mine from my local hardware store(Bunnings Warehouse).
can this mixture enough? like succulent soil mix from home depot, compost soil, perlite and granite that's what I can find in home depot.
Hi Marjorie, Ordinary potting mix with "NO fertilizer" added is best. I personally don't use perlite.
Hello.. thanku for such an informative video...
Just wanted know what if i don't have Seamungus... can i skip it or else plz guide me any other fertilizer avl in India..

Try using chicken manure pellets and seaweed pellets if you can get it. Good luck and thanks for watching.

Hello from Sydney, Liz. I love you videos, thank you so much for sharing :-)
ANL has something called DECO granite, they said it is decomposed granite but the grains looks a lot finer than your granite... is that the right granite to get?
