When this came out in,85 (my grad year) I started feverishly working on the entire sax solo, from Johnny's 1st half, right in to marc's solo. Didn't stop until I could play the whole thing through. Fingers sore and lips bleeding at first. but I figured out all the fingerings, up to the hight G# in the outro.

  • @rredhawk

Love the sax solos. Smooth handoff from Colla to Russo--like a 2-stage rocket, Colla's the booster and Russo takes it into orbit. Awsome.

Man, I remember hearing that alto solo the first time in utter disbelief. I knew it was the TOP horns so assumed it was Lenny Pickett. Who else could play with that much technique AND soul. I guess Mark Russo! Kudos to him.

I was a drummer back in high school, circa 1982 or so. A friend, who was also was a drummer, was in this very popular local rock band--and they opened for these guys when they came through our area before really hitting it big. As it was a quick tear-down between opening act and the main show, I went along to help with the drums. We met all these guys, although the TOP horns were not there. This was a little "sports bar," back in the days before sports bars were a thing. But I don't think there were more than 200 or so people there...and they played this tune, among other hits. Blew. Us. Away.
We stood literally touching the stage on the side near the door, and the tightness and power of this band absolutely blew our heads clean off. It was amazing. As great as they were on stage though, they were even nicer guys offstage (back stage). We were literally all just standing around 10 feet outside the back door of the venue, shooting the shit. My friend and I were having a great conversation with (drummer) Bill, and up walks one Huey Lewis...to malign drummers of course. Just all-around regular guys--until they took the stage. One of the most enjoyable shows I've ever seen, and standing literally 6" away from the stage likely had something to do with that. Bill Gibson was playing these Sonor drums at the time, and neither my friend nor I had really ever seen them in person, as this was before the Internet was even a thing. This song really brings back memories.

I bought Hip to be square as a single in '86 and this was the b-side track. The sax playing from both of those guys, blew me away then and it still does. That's just simply some of the best live music of that era captured on film. There's a unique chemistry in play that is seldom witnessed live these days. The vocal capture from all the voices is brilliant too, those guys really knew how to listen to each other ❤

It is because as a 15 year old you do not have the context to appreciate HL+TN. But I would not expect you to and I can appreciate your view point concerning your dislike of Huey
