It was actually over a pound. I'm guessing the hotelier went through Bowie's room during the gig and that the cops were already waiting to arrest him, and once they sparked up it was probable cause enough to enter the room. People talk about police departments being corrupt now but in '76 it was a different era in american policing altogether. It was basically just sending a clear message: "Stay out of Rochester."

We met him after the show through a a friend of mine who was on his security detail, and I broke his balls over this story, he remembered it vividly and was cracking up about it!
What a great story! The sheer chutzpah of Bowie summoning this beautiful woman from the crowd is an interesting insight into what Rock Stars can do. If those nosy cops hadn't barged in, the ending would still be a secret.

She doesn't deserve to be arrested in the first place!!!!!!!!! I'm sure in 1976 these are all white male RACIST cops that arrested both david bowie and her.
Did those arresting cops ever tested both david bowie and Chi Wah Soo for drugs? Did the arresting cops ever asked Chi Wah Soo a question if she already smoked a joint? If she is telling them the truth that she didn't smoke a joint, then the arresting cops should let her go. Instead they arrested her any. She is just an innocent woman. It's really david bowie's fault who got her into that mess. Thankfully the charges for Chi Wah Soo are dropped. Don't these arresting cops have higher priorities by going after rapist and pedophilers as well as gangbangers, drug dealers and serial killers.
Recall being at a show - won't say who - where the roadies were in the crowd while the band was playing giving out backstage passes, but only to women, and some of them very young. Two who were clearly teenagers (and very possibly legally minors) in front of me were super thrilled to be given the passes, but after the initial thrill wore off, you could see they realized what it was about and their composure completely changed. They left before the end of the show. I was disgusted to see such despicable behavior from the band. The roadies share the blame too for facilitating it.

@@ST-xg3gy yep. I remember him asking me about a Japanese restaurant they were going to the next day, up the street from the DoubleTree Inn they stayed at. The restaurant was called Osome. My brother, a guitarist, was jealous a little bit, but he got to do a video with Lou Reed (a few years later with the Jim Carroll Band), so he wins.
Not many people can say that “David Bowie asked me if I wanted his autograph.”
Never knew about this arrest. Looked like a mugshot from the 30’s. Man was he slick.
I believe getting arrested with David Bowie IS a, "Bragging Right", Story...
Heaven bless this lady! I have memories like this when I was young. At the time you thought it was the worst moment of your life. Thirty years later you see how unique the experience really was.
40 years later. What a moment in time. Mid-70s were something else. Must seem like a dream now.
You were arrested with David Bowie too? Lol.
@@Mel-wn9gb No. Although I wish I could have met David Bowie.
@@flilguy Me too. I wonder what her story would've become if the cops didn't show up!
I have watched this story at least 6 times now. It is fascinating touching and brings back my own fond memories of the 1970s and the man I have idolised from the age of 12 and now I am 62. Thank you so much for sharing this. Xx
Very similar to me. I have idolised Bowie since l was 12 when I saw 'Starman' on Top of the pops in '72, and I'm now 60.
@@brianconway100 I've exactly the same story as you two guys. 61.
I love David Bowie and i am 30 💞 the legends live on in our hearts and get passed down generations 💞
This is a great interview. Thanks for posting it.
If the cops hadn’t shown up, her life might’ve been very different. Ya never know.
That's precisely my thought, singled out from the main crowd, alone on his bed. What was she thinking it was leading to if it was not rudely interrupted. And she was traumatised over nothing really happened
@@lenac3587 it's mind boggling because about 6 years later he wrote a song called 'china girl' and maybe he wrote that while thinking of her and IF they had had sexual relations that night she may have been connected to him up until that time in about 1983 when he made the video to that with a young chinese lady in it and it would have been her instead!!!
Imagine your mom neglecting to tell you about the time she got arrested with one of the biggest stars in America at the time.😆
I would be so mad at my mom for keeping something like that from me. 😂
Yeahhhhhh... not sure I’d want to be answering the children’s questions about “Exactly what were you doing in David Bowie’s hotel room?”
Fuck America, Dave was one of the biggest stars on the globe!!! It started in England and he won over the world!
@@MrJamberee I mean just don't tell them until they're in they're in their late teens/early 20s. Wouldn't have to explain and like, could they really blame her lmao? I'd just be like "damn get it mom"
Thank you Rochester Police for giving us such a hot mugshot of David Bowie! And no the girl from "My little China girl" Geeling Ng lives in Auckland, New Zealand.
I guessed that Chi Wah was, my bad.
China Girl was an Iggy Pop cover.

Wonder what happened to the bracelet
Love Bowie. He is my Icon. Love his music
Chi Wah, you’re an extraordinary person. And you’re witty and resilient.
Your parents were- well, you were very fortunate.
Bowie even looks dapper in his mugshot. Class act
it must be the most handsome mug shot ever

Oh my god he’s my fav singer I still cry he’s gone. Wow what a story. Bowie’s mug shot looks like a vogue shoot
Forty-one years later, Chi Wah could finally tell her story without fear. Speaking publicly now must be a great release for Ms. Soo, and lends understanding to the situation from a 20 year old's perspective and the social cultures at that time. It reminds me that others may be holding in a story of being misunderstood that needs to be expressed. ✌️ What happened to her sister, friends, and bracelet?
This lady is so awesome! Her brief impression of Howie was spot-on
She’s beautiful and has such a wonderful energy. Cool lasts a lifetime. What a story.
I like how she conveys the how hyper-aware she was during her encounter with the visiting alien

“Hello, my name is David Bowie, what’s your name luv?” ... I almost melted 😆
Awww, she seems like a really sweet person...
She was beautiful when she was young, I can see why he picked her out of a crowd.
She’s also beautiful now.
She still is
Yep - she still is.
I wonder if this was the inspiration for the song My China girl
She is super smoking
Great story! Glad you are sharing it!!
I hope Dave did his apology duty to her at long as it took.
Even on the mugshot, the guy looks great. It looks like a staged shot... lighting was perfect.
Thanks for the story Chiwah, we really enjoyed it!
This is the type of content I need right now.
That hair is amazing : D
Well constructed story...very interesting.
Beautiful, intelligent Chiwah.

"My little China Girl, you shouldn't mess we me, I'll ruin everything you are".....
Great story and great storyteller. Chi Wah has such a beautiful, natural way of expressing herself!
Amazing that this happened for a joint. How messed up.
Bowie was a rock star, a foreigner, very flamboyant, and a drug-user, all of which would have painted a huge target on his back. It was basically just sending a clear message: "Stay out of Rochester."
@@joelglanton6531 even so, if it was a case of beer, nobody would care.
@@sspbrazil Well duh; it isn't a federal crime to possess a case of beer. The legal drinking age was also 18 in the state of New York at the time. I'm not editorializing about whether the law in regard to marijuana is or was just or unjust; I'm just saying that the issue wasn't just over a joint.

ITS AWFUL WHAT HAPPENED TO CHIWAH... BUT IT WAS ALSO PRETTY COOL. AND YOU'RE STILL DROP DEAD GORGEOUS.
I transferred to Brockport state to play hockey there in 1977-1978, this story was a local legend up there! In the early eighties my girlfriend and I ( now wife for 39 years) went to see David Bowie on Broadway in a limited engagement of the play ‘ The Elephant Man’. He was phenomenal in that role!
We met him after the show through a a friend of mine who was on his security detail, and I broke his balls over this story, he remembered it vividly and was cracking up about it!
So sad she felt one moment of shame or embarrassment over hanging out with a new friend and they had a joint. So ridiculous and unnecessary
And she didn't even have the joint aswell. Mental
She was from a different time and different ethnicity and she was younger, so it can happen
What a great story! The sheer chutzpah of Bowie summoning this beautiful woman from the crowd is an interesting insight into what Rock Stars can do. If those nosy cops hadn't barged in, the ending would still be a secret.
Well said
"Those nosy cops" lmao. Bowie was into teenagers. So yes, having a "good time" can be iIIegaI depending on what it is. Him and Iman were into having 3 ways and 4 ways with teenagers both Male and Female. Teenage diddIing isn't acceptable no matter who it is.
@@jaygio How do you know what he and Iman did? Sounds like a lie.
@@mollyfrom5556 its called the world wide web. Use it, and stop waiting for videos to come out exposing things. Plenty of info exists on this.

I instantly love this woman. Amazing story. ❤️
I wish her well and thank her for her story.
That was cool to hear her story. Glad everything turned out ok for her.
Ooooops I forgot to add ? Instead of period (.)
I'm so glad this story wasn't what I thought! and how cool does Bowie look in that mug shot.
I LOVE her. LOVE LOVE LOVE. She stayed quiet with this story for all those years!!?? True Class!
The thing about Bowie is he never let the fame define or destroy him as it has many others. He was the same person in his 70s as he was in his 20s.
This woman is an instant legend in my eyes! I love her vibrant personality
I feel bad she didn't do anything wrong. She just sat there
My last concert was a Bowie one, and he was absolutely incredible.

Born and raised in Rochester, I remember this very well eventhough I was only 14, Bowies lawyer later went to prison for drugs, an 11 million dollar armored car heist and murder. He's still in there, even though he took a plea. Yeah, Rochester sucks.
Oh well...it got Rochester on the map...for a few months.
Fucking hell that's one helluva lawyer! Lol I don't suppose you remember his name? Just want to read up on it (I'm sure there must be news stories online about him)
@@teethgrinder83 Tony Leonardo; he was a pretty notorious mob lawyer. The mob is (or was) huge in Rochester. When Bowie hired him he was *the* premiere criminal defense attorney in the Rochester area, with five consecutive murder acquittals recently under his belt. He was then involved in two very notorious armored car robberies that netted a lot of money (which he helped to launder). When he went to prison recently it was for his role in the murder of a business partner, whose car was riddled with bullets Sonny Corleone-style in the middle of an intersection in Greece, which is about ten minutes away from Rochester proper. He was actually released from prison into a halfway house in 2013 and is probably free and living in his own home now. Just search for Tony or Anthony Leonardo; I always thought someone should make a movie based on his life.
